It boggles me too. 

Something new: I just booted up that system for the first time since
installing winrash (it's not used often), and Windows complained about it
performing an illegal operation. Naturally, I tried repeating that by
rebooting, and it didn't do it again.

Of course you would, Wine supports the systray APIs with varying degrees
of success.

A better approach than yet another systray icon though is probably to have
the GUI appear when you rerun the program for a second time.
