Strange bash error "shell-init: error retrieving current directory"

I've been seeing the error

shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access
parent directories: No such file or directory

a lot recently when running Wine, probably when installers
finish.   It started a couple weeks ago.
I think it's a bash error message.
Anyone else seeing that, or know what causes it?
(Do we run our wrapper script in a directory that goes away, say?)
