I had a spate of that over the last month or two.
I think I tracked it down to known X driver problems.
Upgrading from Dapper to Feisty may have helped.

Juan, what distribution, version, and graphics card are you using?
If you're using Ubuntu, and aren't on Feisty yet, try
updating.

I'm using X.org driver atimisc, on an ancient ATI Rage Pro.
