2k is the default version?

I was testing installing Virtualbox today and got an error that
Windows XP is the minimum requirement. Funny I thought...we're
emulating XP, it must want SP 2 or something strange. Fired up
winecfg, and lo and behold, Windows 2000 is the default OS again.
Thought I might be going crazy or botched my local tree, but checking
out on a fresh tree shows the same thing. When/why did this happen?

Isn't the version wine is emulating stored in the registry?  So you'll
have to rm -r ~/.wine and let wine recreate it to see what the default
is or look at the creation code in wine itself.

I build from git daily and run sudo make install. Tried running from
/usr/local/ and from /home/austin/wine-git:

Hrmm so off by 1 error in your winecfg dropdown box then?  Maybe check
the actual registry file?
grep -C6 "\[Software\\\\\\\\Microsoft\\\\\\\\Windows
NT\\\\\\\\CurrentVersion]" .wine/system.reg

Registry shows the correct entry.

Interesting finding:

austin(a)austin-desktop:~$ winecfg # shows 2k
wine: created the configuration directory '/home/austin/.wine'
austin(a)austin-desktop:~$ rm -rf .wine
austin(a)austin-desktop:~$ wineboot
wine: configuration in '/home/austin/.wine' has been updated.
austin(a)austin-desktop:~$ winecfg # shows XP

I'm only seeing this in my feisty VM. My feisty p3 server is fine...

Maybe you installed an old distributors version of wine?

I used to install the budgetdedicated deb each week, and run git from
~/wine-git, but I stopped that a couple months ago. I've been doing a
sudo make install...I'll try to fiddle with my system more and see
what the problem is, since it's apparently either a misconfiguration
on my part, or a strange problem associated with the VM.
