Forte Agent 2.0 (closed beta)
Hi! I am new to the list and have Linux at home since last Thursday. I am still having some problems getting Forte Agent to work under Wine, but I am involved into (closed) beta testing for Forte Agent for many years and we just got the first shot at 2.0 which will change a lot anyway. Some problems are gone, but some serious problems are new. It is the aim of Forte to have Agent run under Wine. So they asked me to invite Wine developers to join the beta testing people so both sides can see what needs to be done. People on the Agent beta list are in very close contact (I really enjoy it) to the progammer Mark Sidell, he really get's the things done we suggest:-)) If you are a Wine developer and would like to join, please let me know, I'll forward it to the guys at Forte. pi

You didn't say what Forte Agent is, so I'll assume you mean this: http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php ie, a newsreader. As you're new to Linux I'll point out that you can use several good native newsreaders, like Pan or KNode. Is there any reason you want Forte in particular?

OK, well, somebody may choose to take a look at their app in their spare time, that sometimes happens, but it's typically for apps with no native equivalents (games, specialist software, macromedia products etc)... probably your best bet one of these options: a) Sit down and start debugging b) Talk to CodeWeavers, they can do app ports professionally c) Find a Wine developer available for work. I normally would be but am currently already working for somebody else on a different app (a domain-specific database). I dunno how much Forte want their app to run on Linux via Wine but we could probably figure something out if they are willing to wait or d) File bugs in bugzilla and hope people get around to fixing them. thanks -mike

You are right. I heard that it would be very popular under Wine so I falsely assumed it is well known.
As you're new to Linux I'll point out that you can use several good native newsreaders, like Pan or KNode. Is there any reason you want Forte in particular?

I had always (naively ?) understood that Agent was rather similar to Turnpike (a mailer/newsreader from the UK ISP Demon, with a similarly dedicated following); and that it was fairly straightforward to get running under wine (this was certainly true of the v3, 4 & 5 versions of TP - TP6 is based on Explorer, alas) (Haven't tried for a bit - tend to use Win4lin) Bob -- robert w hall

Well, Ive been using Agent under wine for at least 5 years. My reasons are not unlike those of others: - Don't like changing my news/mail client. Completely rusted stuck. - Pan and KNode are two of those examples where an application under wine may run more stable then a native app. Agent seems to be programmed quite intelligently, despite hundreds of crashes, I've not seen a data corruption/loss. Good! I'm anxiously waiting for Agent 2.0, because it has some features I would like to have like multiple accounts and multiple servers. Though I would prefer a native Linux app, good supported wine app is still acceptable. Agent is the only app from windows that I use regularly. The other thing I want to see with good support in wine are games, but so far I had no luck with it. :)

I 'm not sure if I would qualify. AFAIK Forte Agent 2.0 uses wxWindows, so maybe it could even be compiled with wxWindows wine port? Regards, Nerijus
