I do not see anything obviously wrong with this patch, but it seems to cause at least
one regression (maybe unhandled IRF_SYNC?). I would vote for defering patch 1-4
until the issue has been investigated.

Patch 5 can be applied independently and only affects the tests, so it should be
fine.
