These have been good questions! I rerun the complete procedure ./configure make depend make make install and wine-0.9.7 installed fine. Before that I did omit the make command, i.e. ./configure make depend make make install I was under the impression that make install first builds all target to be installed, then really installs them. That worked for all Makefiles which provide an install target so far for me (not sure if it worked for wine previously).
