Next steps for Wineconf 2007

I think it makes sense to make this email sort of a 'last call' for hosting offers - please speak up now if you have an idea for Wineconf 2007. But, barring a retraction, we seem to have two generous offers to host Wineconf this year (yay!). That is, one in Zurich (Google/Mike Hearn), and one in Amsterdam or Utrech (Hans). I did a quick, completely non scientific, survey of prices for a trip from MSP to each site around the weekend of September 22: Flight Hotel Zurich $902 ~$125 Amsterdam $820 ~$150 which suggests to me that they are fairly close to a wash. With Zurich, I believe we're hoping that Google will donate the use of their offices to host the conference. With Amsterdam, we may yet need to either shift off a weekend, or find a conference location. (That shouldn't be hard; pretty much any hotel is happy to host a conference like this). Have I summarized correctly? I hope I haven't misrepresented either offer. If so, I suggest we pick a location; and I propose we do that by mailing list consensus. If there doesn't seem to be a consensus, then perhaps we could shift to some sort of a vote. Does that make sense? If it does, express a preference around location, and let's see if a consensus forms... Cheers, Jeremy

The Zurich Tourism site: http://www.zuerich.com/ They seem to provide some kind of offer for group reservations: http://www.zuerich.com/hotel/index.html But I don't know, it could be the expensive stuff they are spooning you with. About transportation they promote this 'Zurich Card' which I don't see as necessarily convenient (34 CHF for using public transports for three days + some unspecified 'other discounts', where just buying a normal Tageskarte at any Bus or Tram station costs 7.80 * day (*3=23.40), with the added flexibility of not being constrained on the three days. I ate in some good but very expensive restaurants in the center and at the lake: http://www.kramergastronomie.ch/ http://www.acqua.ch/ [best during summer though] That's all, maybe some other Zuerich resident can shed more light on these things, since my social life is lacking at best. How about holding Wineconf at Google's campus in Mountain View, California?

Google was nice enough to host a large Ubuntu conference a couple of months ago, and given that they seem to love Wine just as much, I'm sure they'd be willing to lend us some space for Wineconf. More importantly, though, is that we'd get to shmooze with some Google folks, convince them to fund more Wine development (eg Summer of Code), and even present a new Wine/Google product in a pretty flashy fashion. WineConf 2007 Fundraiser proposal

Hello All, At this time I would like to make a proposal that we have a month long "WineConf 07 Fundraiser" starting on March 1st. Over the past three years all funds sent to the WPF have been used to sponsor Wineconf attendees travel and needs, and I'm sure these funds have helped in many other worthwhile ways as well. What we could do is put up a news posting on the winehq front page and also on the Wineconf 07 wiki page asking users and corporations if they would like to help sponsor the next Conf. We could also put together a "Donor list" thank you page, and list everyone that gives and any comments that they would like to make. It has become clear that travel expenses for attendees is the major obstacle in there decision on attending any conference. I know this is not in any way a full solution to the travel expense problem, but it may give one more person the opportunity to attend that other wise would not have had the chance to share in this most pleasant experience. Say, here's a crazy idea: hold Wineconf in Berlin right before Linuxtag... that might make it easier to get the booth staffed... and it might attract a bunch of not-yet-wine-developers to wineconf. WineConf 2007?

Hello Everyone, I just got home and thought I would check my mail even tho Ive been awake for two days now. Hi guys, I'd have liked to come to this years WineConf but am travelling this weekend so cannot be there :( If people could take notes/write up what is discussed etc then that'd be fabuloso. A few topics that might prove fun to discuss: - What happened to the ISV centre that was talked about in previous WineConfs? - When (if ever) will WineHQ start committing to supporting apps CodeWeavers style? - Has recruiting Windows developers to work on the outlying DLLs been given up on? - The idea here was to market our ole/msi/etc to Windows devs who might be constrained by bugs or missing features in Microsofts own implementations - However, git does not work (well?) on Windows - Nothing has been done to push this forward even if it did - Ever since Microsoft lost the plot and started building "10 year frameworks" a la Avalon, the Win32 API we all know and love to hate has been largely abandoned. Yet, millions of developers are still writing software on this framework and aren't going to rewrite for .NET any time soon. The Wine project has an unprecedented opportunity here - to take over from Microsoft as the maintainers of the de facto API; fixing bugs and adding new features (potentially for phat consulting sums). Discuss. - Students working via the SoC programme have made some good contributions, and I know a few are wanting to stay on (Matt is at any rate). Could more developers be recruited by organising some kind of permenant equivalent in which students donate their spare time and we match them with mentors who give some kind of formal training? I know from doing it myself that working on Wine is about a zillion times better at teaching real world computing than a degree ever will be, so there is untapped potential here. - Let Dimi take you guys to a decent club this year!
