I had the same problem with wine-0.9.19 using a nvidia 6600GT with:
nvidia-kernel 1.0.8762-r1 and nvidia-glx 1.0.8762. I solved the problem using
this patch

following the how-to on this page:

But this create a new issue, when you are in a big city, o in a structure, the
game crashes with the following error:

X Error of failed request:  BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
  Major opcode of failed request:  143 (GLX)
  Minor opcode of failed request:  5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
  Serial number of failed request:  605
  Current serial number in output stream:  605
