Without the launcher the game cannot be played. I don't get this error with the launcher.
First, the bootstrapper/launcher needs to work around bug 37023 (winhttp HEAD requests) -> 'winetricks -q winhttp'
I wonder why this hasn't been mentioned here since it's a required prerequisite.
Second, the launcher can be bypassed - after making sure the client is fully updated:
