The recommended installer from http://rubyinstaller.org runs to completion and the installed 'ruby.exe' will report its version with `wine ruby -v`. Maybe Wine's ioinfo structure layout could be made more compatible with Ruby's ioinfo definition, matching MS CRT. There are various other open source projects which directly access this 'semi-documented' internal structure (python, stlport, cygwin, msys ...). If it uses msvcr80.dll it will not work because of the size mismatch. It has not worked yet. I guess msvcrt_set_fd() needs to initialize fdinfo->crit because win32.c (in ruby) includes "EnterCriticalSection(&(_pioinfo(fd)->lock)".
