Don't use debugger unless instructed to. Initially this folder is empty, so I've tried to copy an existing profile there — now the game crashes as soon as it finds out that there are savegames present (on the "load existing or start new game" menu). It's not just when you select difficulty, there's also a crash when you change settings in the options menu. I think they're about the same problem. It's not the usual crash because no bactrace is generated, not a relevant line in the terminal or in the game log file appears. The game suddenly quits without warnings. Comment #6 is probably right, files and directories are missing in Steam/userdata/xxxxxxx/41070/local. Saved games and the game configuration file SeriousSam3.ini should be here. The configuration file should be updated as you change settings in the game; this is one of the occasions when the game crashes. I should add that the game executable uses Valve's CEG DRM (Custom Executable Generation) -> bug #32515.
