With a builtin one, it crashes. I think the problem is in that line: line 80 of d3dx9_36/surface.c hr = IWICImagingFactory_CreateDecoderFromStream(factory, (IStream*)stream, NULL, 0, &decoder); hr is not D3D_OK, so we go to line 166 and returns D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA.
