Re-installing DirectX through winetricks does seem to fix this, despite the
message at the top of the dialog:

"Failed to create XAudio2 engine. Try installing the latest DirectX."

Hello folks,

the game works fine if you work around XAudio2 insufficiencies.

The first problem is bug 36844

The second problem (comment #2 and comment #3) is bug 26808
