If the user who you run wine as has a limit on the amount of virtual memory
they can use (set directly through ulimit -v or through as - address space
limit in limits.conf) wine will not work. The error message is:
wine: failed to initialize: /usr/lib/wine/ntdll.dll.so: failed to map segment
from shared object: Cannot allocate memory 

Removing the limit on virtual memory works around this issue.

I'm not sure if this is a wine bug at all. Wine needs to emulate a complete
Windows memory layout. Perhaps the mmap patch in
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13335 helps but I don't think this is a
wine bug.

Wine always uses the entire 3gb address space, restricting the amount of VM
will break wine.
