You can get this game from

When you quit the game, x windows no longer updates the screen - events are
being responded to though (you can click stuff then change to a terminal tty
and back and see the updates). The only way to get back to a sane system is
kill xwindows with ctrl alt backspace.

This is seen on opensuse 42.3 which uses xf86

This is no longer a problem for me, so can be closed.

(note would be nice if the game used fullscreen but that's another issue)
