Sometimes the app crash during folders comparison, doesn't matter the number of files contained. Errors emerge from rpcss.exe and then the app closes itself. Works fine in real Windows XP SP3 and in VirtualBox. How often is "sometimes"? I compared folders 5 times, different folders each time, and it never crashed. Also, what are the "current additional plugins" you have installed? The PortableApps.com page for this WinMerge Portable does not mention any additional plugins. Please give exact steps to reproduce. I note that you are using a patched version of Wine. Please give exact steps to > reproduce. I guess rpcss.exe reports and crashes are related to comparison of folders when them contain .doc and .xls MSOffice files. Steps to reproduce: Download, and install, WinMerge 2.14.0.0 from http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/winmerge_portable Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Runtime Components is included in the installer, it also includes full support for archives with the bundled 7-Zip plugin. Download, and manual add, xdocdiff WinMerge Plugin from http://freemind.s57.xrea.com/xdocdiffPlugin/en/index.html Before unpacking: Install WinMerge Select [Plugins]-[Automatic Unpacking]. 1. Unzip file. 2. Copy xdoc2txt.exe and zlib.dll to WinMerge program folder. (Where WinMerge.exe is located) -> ./WinMergePortable/App/WinMerge 3. Copy amb_xdocdiffPlugin.dll to sub folder "MergePlugins". -> ./WinMergePortable/App/WinMerge/MergePlugins I can confirm this setup works stable under real WinXP SP3 with MSOffice 2003 also under VirtualBox. > I note that you are using a patched version of Wine. First, Manual Unpacking is selected by default in the Plugins menu, and the menu itself is grayed out, so it cannot be changed. You need to install winetricks vb6run to work around that. Second, xdoc2txt.exe requires mfc42.dll, so that too has to be installed with winetricks. After getting that sorted out, I compared folders with .doc and .xls files, and even compared two .docx files directly. No crash. Which brings us back to your unsupported, patched Wine version: that may be the cause of the crashes you are getting. If it is, this bug is invalid. You left out a couple of important steps from your instructions. First, Manual Unpacking is selected by default in the Plugins menu, and the menu itself is grayed out, so it cannot be changed. You need to install winetricks vb6run to work around that. Second, xdoc2txt.exe requires mfc42.dll, so that too has to be installed with winetricks. Thank you Rosanne, is not a problem for me to do a test purpose install of vb6run and mfc42.dll with winetricks. I could do that without mess up my falkTX customized wine-rt. I am pretty sure I miss something in the way, I am newbie to Linux world, and it was my intention in leaving wine itself barebone, because I mostly do the complex Windows tasks under VirtualBox. I use WinMerge into my Wheezy box only for backup. Ok, it is time to beta test, thank you again, if needed I will be back ASAP to close this false positive.

Hi Rosanne, almost SOLVED, it was mfc42.dll left. rpcss.exe still bothers me, popping up during compare but with an empty backtrace window... Nevermind, as the comparison goes fine to the end (tested with folders with .doc .docx .xls and .xlsx). And my non plain Wine installation is also safe on its way :-) Again, thank you for time and patience.

The need for mfc42 is bug 657, but that's not the cause of the crash in rpcss you are reporting. I can't reproduce that crash in plain Wine, with or without mfc42.
