For ru_RU, it seems to be something like CP866 or Windows-1251. I would expect it to be the same for ru_UA and something like CP1125/RUSCII for uk_UA. However, it seems to fallback to (something closer to) CP437 or Windows-1252, resulting in garbage latin characters for cyrillic text. ru_RU Example: Яндекс.Браузер — это безопасный и быстрый браузер с нейросетями. uk_UA Example: ßíäåêñ.Áðàóçåð — ýòî áåçîïàñíûé è áûñòðûé áðàóçåð ñ íåéðîñåòÿìè. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. For at least a decade pretty much all Linux distros have been advising their users to use UTF-8 locales. So, clarify what do you mean by 'resulting in garbage latin characters for cyrillic text'. As long as your system is using an utf-8 locale, the filenames should be fine, regardless if it's ru_RU.utf8 or uk_UA.utf8. The text in the text files depends on the codepage the editor is using - if it's UTF-8 or UTF-16, there should be no difference based on locale; if it's an 8-bit codepage, those aren't compatible by design. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. Most encodings of the same alphabet are very similar in nature, so I would expect Russian text read in a Ukrainian codepage be legible with minor changes like the letter є being swapped out for ґ. Meanwhile I would expect ru_UA to behave identically to ru_RU.
