It is said to require WPF, which is kind of like the second coming of gdiplus, but much, much larger. Mono has no plans to implement WPF (see http://www.mono-project.com/WPF ) FWIW, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Presentation_Foundation mentions that WPF consists of a bunch of managed components plus two native DLLs: milcore.dll and windowscodecs.dll.
