[Bug 60299] New: Dune 2000 crashes after a few seconds with "stack smashing detected" in Wine 11.0
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60299 Bug ID: 60299 Summary: Dune 2000 crashes after a few seconds with "stack smashing detected" in Wine 11.0 Product: Wine Version: 11.0 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: blocker Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@list.winehq.org Reporter: ysergent@mail.com Target Milestone: --- Distribution: --- AI analysed: Wine version: Wine 11.0 (Flatpak org.winehq.Wine, wow64-25.08) Application: Dune 2000 Hardware: AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT Kernel driver: amdgpu Graphics: Mesa 26.0.8 OpenGL 4.6 X11 The game starts normally and runs for a few seconds, then crashes. There is also a difference in video mode handling between this system and another PC where the game works. On the AMD system, the display did not initially expose a 640x480 mode on the primary monitor. I had to manually create and add a 640x480 XRandR mode before Dune 2000 could use 640x480 fullscreen. The mode was created with: xrandr --newmode "640x480" 25.175 640 656 752 800 480 490 492 525 -hsync -vsync xrandr --addmode HDMI-A-0 640x480 On another PC using an Intel HD 4000 with an Intel Core i7-3840QM, Dune 2000 works correctly without manually creating or adding any video mode. The 640x480 mode is available directly on that system. However, manually adding the 640x480 mode on the AMD system does not resolve the crash. The game still crashes after a few seconds. The crash is reproducible with the default Wine DirectDraw renderer. Relevant output: 013c:err:dplay : no service providers? 013c:err:dplay Unable to load service provider {44eaa760-cb68-11cf-9c4e-00a0c905425e} 013c:err:dplay Failed to Initialize SP: DPERR_UNAVAILABLE 013c:fixme:ddraw Ignoring flags 0x1. *** stack smashing detected ***: terminated 013c:err:virtual nested exception on signal stack addr 0x789df669df9c stack 0x7ffceb70 Tests performed: 640x480 fullscreen: crash 800x600: crash different monitor: crash Wine virtual desktop: crash normal fullscreen: crash ALSA audio: crash PulseAudio/PipeWire audio: crash DirectDraw Renderer=gdi: crash DirectDraw Renderer=opengl: crash The custom XRandR 640x480 mode was also removed and the system rebooted; Dune 2000 still crashes after a few seconds. The crash therefore does not appear to be caused solely by the manually created 640x480 XRandR mode. The same Dune 2000 installation works on another PC using the same Wine 11.0 version, with an Intel HD 4000 and Intel Core i7-3840QM. On that system, no additional video mode has to be created manually. The crash on the AMD system consistently occurs around: ddraw_surface1_Flip Ignoring flags 0x1. followed by: stack smashing detected This appears to be related to the DirectDraw path, possibly in combination with the AMD/amdgpu/Mesa graphics stack. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60299 --- Comment #2 from ysergent@mail.com --- Can you try with wine 11.17? I tried but was unable as flatpack don't expose it, still at 11.0. Is there a free and legal download this could be reproduced with? yes, https://www.myabandonware.com/game/dune-2000-8in, this exactly the iso i use. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply.
