[Bug 58946] New: Homebrew packages deprecated; will be disabled Q3 2026
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58946 Bug ID: 58946 Summary: Homebrew packages deprecated; will be disabled Q3 2026 Product: Packaging Version: unspecified Hardware: aarch64 OS: MacOS Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: wine-packages Assignee: wine-bugs(a)list.winehq.org Reporter: keener_muffles_83(a)icloud.com CC: dimesio(a)earthlink.net Created attachment 79641 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=79641 Full output of `brew info wine-stable` The wine packages on Homebrew (`wine-stable`, `wine(a)devel`, `wine(a)staging`) are currently deprecated, and will be disabled in the future. The exact message provided by `brew info` is "Deprecated because it does not pass the macOS Gatekeeper check! It will be disabled on 2026-09-01." The dependency `gstreamer-runtime` also has this issue with the same message, though I do not know if or how this is related. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58946 Thor <mjmm8ql94@mozmail.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |mjmm8ql94@mozmail.com --- Comment #1 from Thor <mjmm8ql94@mozmail.com> --- Hi, I've also installed Wine via Homebrew. This also is suggested in the official docs: https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/wikis/MacOS I'm getting the warning: "Deprecated because it does not pass the macOS Gatekeeper check! It will be disabled on 2026-09-01." I guess this is because the wine binaries are not code signed: # quill describe /opt/homebrew/bin/wine Binary 1 of 1: File Details: Magic: 64-bit MachO Type: EXECUTE CPU: Amd64 (x86_64) Flags: NoUndefs, DyldLink, TwoLevel, PIE Libraries: [ "/usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib" ] LoadCommands: 17 UUID: ADF0E0D9-E361-3E88-8C68-A03CE747651F Code Directory (block 1): Version: ExecSeg Flags: adhoc ID: wine-55554944adf0e0d9e3613e888c68a03ce747651f TeamID: Digest: sha256:6dc5169f246da289197049be4d1b58f77bfc0e601a1a02a3d7a241ee09e5ebb4 SpecialDigests: count=2 (hidden) PageDigests: count=4 (hidden) CMS (block 1): Valid: false (there is no cryptographic signature) Requirements (block 1): Req 0 (type=RequirementType(0)): empty requirement set -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58946 Philip <philip.leblond@gmail.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |philip.leblond@gmail.com --- Comment #2 from Philip <philip.leblond@gmail.com> --- It is now after 2026-09-01. As promised, wine has been officially deprecated in the homebrew core tap, and it is no longer possible to install wine from brew. As an incredibly temporary workaround, I have generated a custom tap which installs wine for me. https://github.com/philberthfz/homebrew-wine It tracks the same package source as the previous wine cask did, it just does it in an unofficial tap instead of the core tap. Using it is *slightly* more complicated. Does this work? Possibly, for right now. It works for me, on my machine, at this moment. I make no guarantees that it will work for you or that it will continue working in the future. Should users use this? Probably not, but I also know that people are going to try and find a workaround for the error message and I'd rather they find my quick-and-dirty workaround instead of some malicious script on a shady website. Naturally, given that my efforts are intended to be a very temporary quick-and-dirty hack, I full expect it will become load-bearing infrastructure that we're stuck with for the next decade. Somebody please prove me wrong and fix things so it works the "right" way, I'm begging you. If you're following along at home and want to make use of this custom tap, simply do the following: brew tap philberthfz/wine brew trust philberthfz/wine [OR: brew trust philberthfz/wine/wine@devel brew trust philberthfz/wine/gstreamer-runtime ] brew install --cask philberthfz/wine/wine@devel [Or: wine-stable, wine@staging] DO TAKE NOTE: it's generally not a good idea to trust an entire tap unless you trust the person running it, you should only trust the individual applications you actually need. I trust me, of course, but that doesn't mean you should. Just because I'm well intentioned doesn't mean I'm competent. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply.
