Here's my next attempt. It's smaller, thinner, anything I missed? A few things to consider - Biggest issue, what happens if we ask somebody to put up a Works With Wine button, and then they release a new version that doesn't? Do they take the button down? See below for a possible resolution to that problem. - Where does the button link to? I vote for a page that introduces Wine and perhaps also Linux, how they relate etc - ie assume zero knowledge about free software. The page then has a link to the appdb entry for the program. The "intro" page would simply be have a dynamically generated link to the appdb, so it acts as a kind of forwarding page. If a new version is released and it no longer works in Wine, this can be noted in the appdb. - Could it be used as the start of trying to get Wine accepted as just another version of Windows? Once the button is up on the site, I should think the app maintainers would want to keep it there, after all if it works in Wine then their app has a bigger market right? I started thinking about how to get more people helping out on Wine, and remembered that in the early days of X some of the developers signed NDAs with hardware makers to get the driver specs. Perhaps if there is an app that for whatever reason doesn't work with Wine, a developer could sign an NDA, get access to the source, and either improve Wine so it works, or alter the program (possibly both). We win, as Wine improves. They win, as their app now works on Linux too. Of course, it'd be nicer to have native apps, but hey. - The button is just there if site owners would like it, I'd be happy to settle for a textual link as well. - Should the intro page explain about the 3 streams of Wine? IE "if the app that linked to this page is a business app, you may have success with CodeWeavers Crossover. If it was a game, then you might want to investigate WineX, or you can get the latest sources direct from WineHQ" etc I'm happy to knock up an intro page that can be integrated into the wine site if that's what people would like. thanks -mike

Hi all, The current OpenGL code (well, to be more precise, the current WGL code) is really X11 dependant and is only separated through hacks via ExtEscape mechanisms to get X11 specific variables. As I never was able to find documentation about the OpenGL ICD mechanism (ie the way all this is handled in real Windows), I see three possible solutions : 1) As almost all WGL functions have an HDC or OpenGL context argument (for those having a context argument, the corresponding HDC can easily be found). Thus one solution would be to use 'DC_GetDCPtr' to get the DC pointer and then move all these functions in the GDI function pointer table. The problem with that is that 'DC_GetDCPtr' is already flagged as a hack and so I am bit reluctant to use it :-) 2) Put all HDC function in GDI itself and replace in OpenGL's spec file all of these by forwards to GDI. 3) Use the ExtEscape mechanism to not only get specific variables, but something akin to what DDraw does to get the HAL function pointer table and then use these pointers to do the real low level work in the WGL functions. Page faults

Having just added more memory to prevent the disk swapping I was encountering, I now seem to be crashing with a page fault. I don't really know enough about how the memory is handled. Is this likely to be a wine bug? I am running native versions of msvcrt and mfc42, but pretty much builtin for everything else. This is running Xilinx fpga_editor. When running on this particular design, it appears to use about 350MB of RAM. IMO we should just include a copy of the CUPS headers that we need, and drop the compile time check altogether. In fact, this check is misleading, as it suggests that we've verified some sort of compatibility with CUPS which we haven't. We _assume_ that a certain API is available at runtime, so why pretend we use something that's on the machine we compile on? -- Dimi.

I have a VB prog (see www.badcomp.co.uk) which I spent a long time getting working under Wine and fixed all the oleaut32 Var* routines it used. However if you look at that dll, there are still a huge number of stubs. Additionally the date/time handling is (was, anyway) pretty useless. I would strongly recommend if anyone starts writing VB testcases they try and exercise the Variant cases as well as the standard types (...and no, I dont have time!) VB Window Icons dont work in the wine tree - Marcus sent me a fix for OleLoadPictureEx which solves the problem but he never submitted it to the wine tree (I have a copy, but not of the license it was under). Also, Icons containing transparency dont work for me either, but thats not a vb thing, I guess. I never got printing working (wine and cups doesnt seem to handle hplj's very well - I've seen a lot of problem reports about that) but aside from that, the functionality worked fine as far as I could test. If I ever get motivated I'll try to test the printing as there is a huge amount of code I wrote to do a print preview, and that will probably highlight more var fn's missing. Regards, Jason

I found one bug also; on certain case, a closed file's buffer might has been used for the next opened file with same HANDLE. Where is CLOSEFILE code?! Shouldn't it be on file.c? I need to find it to invalidate the buffer at correct place! I think that the original problem is that wine opens and closes unix file for every ReadFile. This will propably flush all linux own buffers and linux filesystem has to read the same data over and over again (when application calls ReadFile with small buffers, of course). Opened unix files should be kept open as long as corresponding WINAPI files are open. BTW. I'm using totally non-MS system. Is there any problem with MS dll's? Hannu ps. Just so everyone knows, since I have Outlook (and Evolution) support with my ISP's email now, I have switched over to it for my list needs.
