POSE (Palm OS Emulator) on WINE?

Hi list. Because Sony doesn't provide a Unix source code branch, I tried to run their Windows based POSE on WINE. At first glance it runs, but only until a command of the context menu is chosen. WINE reports an "unhandled exception" and launches the debugger. My question: does anyone heard about how to make POSE run on WINE? Is anyone interested in making them work together? Both are Open Source... Unfortunately I can't because of my lack of time :-( TIA, Bodo

It could sometimes produce bad side effects due to different unicode implementations and the fact that Wine's default ANSI code page often is not the same as a one used by an underlying system. The best way to avoid discrepancies is to use Win32 APIs to deal with locale sensitive data. Other way to avoid use of the libc locale dependant functions is to delegate all the work to unicode version of the API and leaving to ANSI version only simple work of converting strings to unicode and adopting the returned data if necessary. -- Dmitry.

Wine conformance testing on native platforms

Dimi, I see that you've added me as a "volunteer" for running the conformance tests on NT. Gee, thanks :). In any case, I don't mind doing this. However, I have a question : what should I do with the test results? Posting them to wine-devel every time a test changes seems somewhat high-bandwidth... What we (i.e., the testers) could do is to keep track of what changes between successive test runs, I guess, and we could just post a summary of the changes. This brings up another point: these test results should be put up somewhere on the Web for everyone to see. Might I suggest putting them up on the Wine Janitorial Projects page? For every platform, just put in a link to "Most recent test results", say. advapi32_test registry 3 errors vs 31 errors

Hi, Just ran the conformance tests on my laptop: The first time I went through I got 3 errors, the second time I got 31 So I get the feeling that one of the tests (maybe even that one) is doing something weird. Im on a quest now to find out which one (if any!) Serious problem with / and mount points

Trying to read a dvd rom that wasn't mounted, I did "dir" in wcmd. The label of the disc was displayed and "file not found". Ok, you can add me to Win98 (non-SE) testing as well as Win2k (SP3) testing, here is the zipped output of the conformance tests, I ran each test individually (instead of using runtests.bat) and sometimes had to run it 2 or more times to get all of the output because for some reason Win98 on this box (at work) isnt letting me redirect output to a file...go figure. Anyways, here it is for anyone that wants it..

I was unable to redirect anything to a file, and windows makes it unbelievably annoying to copy and paste text between programs. I finally tracked down the regression in the MSVC 4.0 installer to one patch: http://www.winehq.com/hypermail/wine-cvs/2002/08/0166.html ------ Modified files: dlls/winmm/wineoss: audio.c Log message: Ove Kaaven <ovek(a)transgaming.com> Tweaks to improve playback performance and reduce sound glitches: - wodGetPosition does not send an update message to the player thread; this reduces the accuracy of the readout from byte-accuracy to near fragment-accuracy, but we save 2-4 context switches and kernel scheduling penalties. - if FeedDSP runs out of data, do not flush output buffers before notifications are sent and given the chance to provide more sound data. Do not flush before we're down to the last fragment. - messages to the player thread are signaled using Unix pipes instead of Win32 synchronization primitives, to avoid having the player thread wait for the wineserver (and context switches from/to it) before the it can feed more data to the sound card. - ring buffer size is increased from 30 to 192 to support some games that fires 128 messages at once to determine DMA buffer size. ------ Before this patch, clicking on "Exit" in MSVC 4.0 installer worked. After this patch, it hangs. Is there anyway to tell the *test programs* (i.e. not the script) to send output elsewhere, such as stdout? If not it should be added. Then piping to a file should work without any special incantations in Windows. The tests output all there results on stderr so to redirect all info into a file when starting the batch file the command runtests.bat>>result.txt 2>&1 seems very useful. wineoss/wavemap and i810 sound cards

Here's the problem: apparently i810 sound cards (and the corresponding OSS drivers) only accept 48kHz sound in 16 bit stereo. So if an application uses winmm to play a sound in any other format, winmm has to use the wave mapper to do the conversion to that format. But msacm refuses to do a conversion to 48kHz sound because that sampling rate is not in the 'supported formats' list: see around line 870 of 'dlls/msacm/pcmconverter.c'. Hence the attached patch to pcmconverter. The changes in wavemap.c are just so that we at least try to see if we could convert to that sampling rate. However, why only support conversion between these specific formats? Why not support anything between 100 and 100000Hz for instance? That would nicely match the range returned by DirectSound... Does this patch look ok? Should I rewrite it using the above range instead? 1.) One of the computers at my home has Win98SE. 2.) I will probably have to run precompiled tests. 3.) I do not know how often I can run the tests. 4.) It will probably be a couple of days before I can get to it. Within those limits, I would be glad to do the 98SE tests. On the matter of redirection, redir to NUL works fine, but not to a file, although it should. So maybe if I can redirect to a device, and somehow redirect the device to a file? Stretch Drawing

Hi, StretchBlt/StretchDIBits operation doesn't appear to be getting done in hardware. In fact performance is slightly improved if I scale the image prior myself and call BitBlt/SetDiBitsToDevice. If I'm correct in my understanding of the x11drv source code (bitblt.c) it appears to be scaling it in software and sending this image to the hardware using XPutImage - only looked briefly. Scaling it myself might be quicker because wine is having to prepare buffers for the scaling it itself each time. Is anyone aware of this problem or am I misinterpreting the problem. If this is what's happening, is there an equivalent to XPutImage that requests that the stretching operation be done in the graphics hardware which is going to be considerably faster and almost instantaneous I would guess. I noticed that painting very large dialogs can be slow - might this be caused by the same thing? Thanks Patrick

window(statusbar) position bug

Under managed mode starcrafts editor the status bar appears in the incorrect location, some 1 inch from the bottom of the maximized window(the way the editor starts up). The same behavior occurs in non-managed mode although the status bar is in the correct location whenever the window isn't maximized. Any ideas? Alexandre? I wouldn't mind looking into this but I'm not very familiar with how wine/windows handles resizing and where to begin looking. Thanks, Chris

WinXP Test Oddities (Changed Test Results!!)

Hi, I ran the advapi32_test registry again today, and only received 3 errors: h:\wine\wine\dlls\advapi32\tests\registry.c:96: Test failed: value set to 'xxxxxxxxxx' instead of 'Te' h:\wine\wine\dlls\advapi32\tests\registry.c:97: Test failed: data set to 'xxxxxxx' instead of 'foobar' h:\wine\wine\dlls\advapi32\tests\registry.c:111: Test failed: data set to 'xxxxxxx' instead of 'foobar' This seems very strange to me. I ran the test at first because I thought it might have been a matter of long file names, but then when I moved it back I found it wasnt, there was just something weird happening instead. Wine, Windows.Forms on Linux, GC and segfaults.

Hello, With the help of Hans Boehm, I have been tracking the problems we have to run the Windows.Forms code with GC enabled. Turns out that the problem is not the Boehm code at all, it just exposes a problem that might be happening elsewhere. The problem is that by the time that Wine has been initialized, using setjmp/longjmp will always lead to a crash. The code in pthreads that performs the longjmp will first try to invoke the pthread cleanup routines, and then invoke longjmp. This never happens. In the particular case of Mono, I added a small bit of code before calling into Boehm's GC, and then I run my app like this: wine monostub.exe.so The code snippet is: jmp_buf buf; printf ("Here\n"); if (setjmp (buf) == 0){ printf ("before\n"); longjmp (buf, 1); } else { printf ("after\n"); } The code should display: Here before after But with Wine, I get a crash inside longjmp, after the "before" is printed out. I get the Wine Console with the stack trace, but I can not copy/paste from it, so I have included a screenshot of it. I can not run Wine with Valgrind because it calls modify_ldt(), but I suspect memory corruption. I was wondering if it would be possible to just "link" against the Wine library instead of having to create a stub application to run from? Best wishes, Miguel

His original patch support Japanese, thus I think mime will work with japanese too. While I heared that there was a patch for korean XIM support, I think I'd better check with it to ensure my patch support korean too. Anyone know / has it? Could you send me a copy? lz32 & kernel32

I have checked the Wine spec files against the list of APIs exported by the various Windows libraries and started on resolving the discrepancies. One of the (smaller) things I found is that in Win2000 and WinXP the LZ API is implemented in kernel32 and lz32 only contains forwards that point to kernel32. In all other Windows version however, the LZ API is not available from kernel32 and is implemented in lz32. What should we do? Should we have kernel32 import lz32 and forward the LZ functions it? Intel 8x0 and ALSA sound driver

Hi, I have a SIS SI7012 (Intel 810 chipset) built-in audio card, which turns out to be capable of only 48000Hz sample rate in hardware. The ALSA winmm driver in Wine is hardcoded to use the first hardware pcm device ("hw:0") directly, and therefore fails for any wave format request with a sample rate different than 48000Hz. I have lifted some code from dsound and put together a patch which adds the option to read the device name from the Wine configuration file. As a result I have now got Winamp working (hurray for me!). HOWEVER there are still issues - the "default" ALSA device doesn't like the way Wine accesses it through mmap, and also it seems that it is not possible to set the buffer size and period size the way it is done now. Other programs that use ALSA, like aplay and mplayer, don't have this problem. My knowledge of Wine and ALSA is pretty meagre, so can anyone can provide any insight as to how to fix this issue? I've found that many of the test applications I've tried installing failed due to the lack of MSIEXEC. If it is implemented, could you tell me where to find it? If not, I'd like to contribute, could you tell me if any work has been done and who to coordinate with? Thanks, -Scott

Warning fix in msvcrt_test

Another thing noticed while compiling the tests on MSVC... In the msvcrt_test project, the link finishes with this warning: LINK : warning LNK4098: defaultlib "LIBCMTD" conflicts with use of other libs; use /NODEFAULTLIB:library It's pretty easy to fix it manually (and the warning doesn't seem to cause harm), but it would be nice of Patrik to incorporate what this patch does (the project's file is a generated file, so the patch cannot be directly applied to CVS). Accented Characters

Hello all. I've been trying to get accented characters to work propperly in wine. For those who dont know, accented characters are beasts like "áéýúíó" We obtain them by pressing the dead key (mute_acute in my case) and then the key we want accented. I'm using CVS as of yesterday. [ra(a)xo winecvs]$ cat wine/VERSION Wine version 20021125 As far as I can tell, dlls/x11drv/keyboard.c seems to be where my problem is. Using closest match instead (Icelandic keyboard layout) for scancode mapping. Please define your layout in windows/x11drv/keyboard.c and submit them to us for inclusion into future Wine releases. See the Wine User Guide, chapter "Keyboard" for more information. Now, keyboard.c does have a definition for the Icelandic keyboard, but as far as I can tell it's only used to recognize what keymap is in action, and not to define it ?. I've experimented with it, things like changing the "2" key to a "b" but it did not change the keyboard layout. The warning above is just because the definition in wine for the IS keymap doesnt match the one thats shipping with XFRee86 completely ? Anyway. my battle for the accented characters continues. The keyboard handling in wine is unlike anything I've ever seen before. Can anyone give me a quick runthru on how keyboard handling really works in wine, and prehaps help fix this ? Also, how are accented characters (dead keys) working in other languages ? Is this a problem limited to Icelandic or to accented characters in general ? what to do with include/wine/obj_base.h?

I've submitted a patch to move the API prototypes out of obj_base.h, and I'd now be ready to submit unknwn.idl and unknwn.h, which would also supersede the interfaces defined in there, but I'm unsure about what to do with the remainder of it, namely the ICOM_* macros in there. Note that there's a shortcoming of those macros, they don't handle array arguments. Such arguments are binary-compatible with pointer arguments though, so it's not a serious shortcoming for Wine and widl (which could easily convert array args in IDL to pointer args in C), but it's a little ugly and may have source-compatibility issues if widl is used by Winelib code that implements interfaces with such method args. There are standard COM interfaces with this problem too, e.g. IPropertyStorage, but since such interfaces are implemented by Wine and not by app code, there's unlikely to be source-compatibility issues there. So the options include 1) keep using obj_base.h as it is, let widl use those macros as is (and convert array args to pointer args), include it into unknwn.h 2) move ICOM macros to include/objbase.h, and dispose of obj_base.h 3) make widl use the MS-style macros in objbase.h (but I'm not sure what to do about ICOM_MSVTABLE_COMPAT and ICOM_USE_COM_INTERFACE_ATTRIBUTE in this case) 4) make widl not use macros at all, but emit full C and C++ definitions directly (this is what midl.exe does, it seems) 5) make widl support any of the above with a command-line option, so that Wine headers uses 1 or 2, while Winelib apps get to use 3 or 4. 6) redesign the ICOM macros (but I doubt anyone's going to volunteer for that unless tied to a chair supervised by an ancient master of torture with a cat-o'-nine-tails in his toolbox, there's too much code to change)
