Automatic Regression Testing

I was sitting in a sitting room, Toying with some toys, When from a room marked Gruesome, There came a gruesome noise. I've been "toying" with an automatic regression testing system over the past month or so. The results can be seen at: http://www.astro.gla.ac.uk/users/paulm/WRT/ Currently its only using the Perl framework, which doesn't test too much at the moment. Hopefully this will change soon. FlexLM and "tcp_s is bad"

Hallo, I have a demo of a commercial Linux application, which comes with FlexLM protection but doesn't have a Linux vendor daemon. Running windows flexlm with the windows vendor daemon and --winver win95 --dll netapi32=b works fine and will save me having to run a NT Box with VMWare in the background. Good! Running Linux flexlm calling the windows vendor daemon via wine however doesn't work. Flexlm aborts with a message "tcp_s is bad!!!". Could this tcp_s be some sequence number that our present winsock implementation does wrong somehow? I can give more evidence on reqeust. Any help appreciated. homeless tweak for /usr/bin/wine

Hi, the former author and maintainer of the shell script /usr/bin/wine just recommended I submit a tweak for that script to wine-devel. I'd prefer to email only one maintainer rather than a busy list tho. If that is feasible, then who does one email tweaks for /usr/bin/wine to? _snprintf vs snprintf + proposed patch

Hello, When working on my port of wrc to windows I had to change snprintf to _snprintf in ppy.y on line 294 to build under mingw. I checked the msdn and didn't find anything on snprintf or _snprintf so I don't know if this patch will work for building under visual studio. Do I need to make a check for HAVE_SNPRINTF? I'm using msys and mingw so I can write a configure check if that is what is needed. wineconf summary

Here's my wineconf summary. It's not much of a summary, since it's so damn long. I wanted to record as much as possible for the developers that weren't there because I think a lot of ideas and direction was generated and should be shared among the community. I put in <> brackets in areas where I need correction, and I am going to correct some of those myself. Andi, I'd like to put this on winehq somewhere with the presentation files hyperlinked from the same page. Once I get all the presentations, I'll provide you with them. Once it's ready, maybe we can submit it to slashdot for everybody who couldn't be there. I really want to thank all of you for your participation. I not only learned a lot, I also had a really great time meeting and getting to know all of you. And I think that next time, Andi should buy the beer.

Linux is a great server OS, and with some UI work, it would be even better. (Yes, people still pay extra for NT on their servers because the GUI admin tools are much easier than

Status of Wrc port to mingw

I'm currently trying to port wrc to mingw. Everthing builds fine except when running "bison -bppy -ppp -d -t ./ppy.y" I get "conflicts: 2 shift/reduce". Heap allocation problem

Something else to look at when people get back from wineconf. One of my apps (Actel Designer) was generating the error message from HEAP_CreateSystemHeap(): system heap base address 65430000 not available This results from the call to MapViewOfFileEx() with the address SYSTEM_HEAP_BASE, which is 65430000. The comment in the header of MapViewOfFileEx() for this parameter, addr, says it is a "Suggested starting address for mapped view". That then calls anon_mmap_aligned(). In this particular application, the address 6543xxxx appears to have already been allocated elsewhere, so anon_mmap_aligned() appears to have allocated a valid block, but at a different address. Then at the bottom of the routine, the test else if (ptr != base) determines that these two addresses do not match and then unmaps the allocated block, leading to the heap allocation failure. Oddly enough, back in October, when this problem first appeared (with the introduction of anon_mmap_aligned()), HEAP_CreateSystemHeap() contained the comment "pre-defined address not available, use any one", but later on the "use any one" part was removed. So I tried commenting out the unmapping in anon_mmap_aligned(), and returning the allocated pointer, and my program is back to working fine. But I am not anywhere near understanding what the right fix is.

correct way to get windows version

What's the correct way to determine the current windows version wine is using from advapi32.dll? I looked through the list archives and in the documentation and I found VERSION_GetVersion(), but if I use that advapi32 won't compile. I'm preparing my patches for aol7, but I know that one of them is specific to windows95, and it won't be accepted if I don't put the version check in.

debugging longman dictionary

Hi! I'm trying to debug what goes wrong with the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English. I have succeeded installing it under wine on a fake windows installation. (I had some problems, and posted them on wine-user, but I have succeded) Now I get an unhandled exception (page fault on read access). But I cant find the cause of the problem. Maybe somebody could hint me how to proceed. I'm attaching the output of wine --debugmsg +relay LDOCE32.EXE Also I have set up a breakpoint, and stepped through the last 10 instructions before the page fault, but I dont understand what that code is trying to do (it is somewhat strange). Also it may be usefull if you could put in a faq or some other documentation that the next output (which is very frequent), is just a check running debugger. This check is usually done in sharewares to check whether the program is debugged. This is the characteristic output: fixme:win32:DEVICE_Open Unknown/unsupported VxD SICE. Visual FoxPro and "GDI Regressions"

- Previously posted to wine-users (but with LESS info, worded worse :) As much as I think I won't be able to accomplish anything, I keep trying, and I've come across something interesting.. I'm testing my regression by doing the following: - Start the app - Press CTRL-V to paste text into the Command Window (which is the active 'MDI' window - but not really MDI - by default) - Switch to another virtual desktop - Switch back to Foxpro Desktop (That makes the Command Window 'look' active, by becoming blue instead of grey) - Click on the text that has been pasted. All builds after 5/10/01 will have the problem. The text will highlight as I move the mouse, as if I was still holding the mouse button down. This behavior is the same on scrollbars also. I normally run FoxPro with: wine /mnt/windows/DevStudio/vfp/vfp.exe Trying to discern some useful information, I've been playing with debugmsg. I've noticed if I do: wine --debugmsg +scroll,+event,+toolbar,+gdi,+heap /mnt/windows/DevStu dio/vfp/vfp.exe Clicking works as it should.. Scrollbars take two clicks before the ButtonRelease isn't acknoledged, but the text highlighting doesn't occur. I can click and move around normally. If I attempt to highlight text, (holding down the button) the ButtonRelease then is ignored as before.. If I cut out some of the debug info: wine --debugmsg +scroll,+event,+toolbar /mnt/windows/DevStu dio/vfp/vfp.exe We're back to normal (non-working normal). It seems like there is some timing issue that the (almost extreme) slowness from printing the debugging info is overcoming..(it's just going to stdout) Is there a click/release timer that could be increased? I've posted a small application at http://www.havokmon.com/stuff/vfp5test.zip . It uncompresses to a setup.exe and files, which includes the VFP5 Runtime, and a test.exe application that just opens a MDI window. The above test works on this application. http://www.havokmon.com/stuff/vfp5test.txt has more information on setup and installation with Wine (because it's not 100%). Borland C 5 - 16bits

Hi, I am trying to run a point of sale app with the following structure: i) 16 bit ii) written in Borland C 5 iii)uses DDE iv) The app is broken into some 4 or 5 EXE and DLL files that communicate with the windows POST MESSAGE function. Two apps communicate through DDE. Does anyone have experience with applications written with Borland C in wine? It seems that 16 bit Apps written in Borland C are not working as in win98. The thing is I have tried about 30 apps. Everything written in Visual C (16 and 32 bits) works. Almost all apps written in Borland 32 bits, including OWL and BWCC apps work. This is a quite impressive showing for wine. 16 bit Apps written in Borland C seem to perform poorly. Running the apps with --debugmsg warn+all shows consistent problems with GDI: use of invalid pointers HEAP: adressing attempts of invalid addresses Furthermore, it seems that the apps are not correctly sharing the processor. For the program to run it is necessary to click in all the windows and therefore allocate processor time by giving focus. Does anyone have experience with Borland C 16 bit apps. These are comments about the patch that I submitted. Since it is a fairly significant change, and I don't yet have much of a track record (and am admittedly not a programmer by training or profession) I thought some detailed comments were in order. I have two applications, Xilinx fpga_editor and Actel designer, where the toolbars did not work. They were drawn fine, tooltips worked, and when clicked, they put messages into the status bar indicating what they were supposed to do. But the actual actions were never performed. Tracing the apps, I found that what was happening was that upon LBUTTONUP, the applications for whatever reason explicitly called ReleaseCapture() before TOOLBAR_LButtonUp() was executed. This caused TOOLBAR_LButtonUp() to be called with infoPtr->bCaptured == 0 and infoPtr->nButtonDown == -1, as would be expected. However, this also caused almost all of the code in the routine to be skipped, since most of it is contained within the large if(){} section. So I got ControlSpy and figured out how to get that to compile and run (under Borland C++Builder), and was able to modify it to explicitly call ReleaseCapture() before the TOOLBAR_LButtonUp(). This I did in the routine GetMsgProc() in ControlSpy, by testing for the correct hwnd and message before explicitely calling ReleaseCapture. I kind of expected CallWndProc() to be the right place, but it did not seem to be, and I really don't understand it well enough yet to know why. In any case, running this modified version (and the original version to compare results) under WinNT, I saw that the when ReleaseCapture is explicitely called before TOOLBAR_LButtonUp(), that all the same messages and notifications are still generated, with the exception that WM_CAPTURECHANGED does not get sent. And that is as expected, since it was already sent by the explicit call to ReleaseCapture(). So the patch modifies TOOLBAR_LButtonUp() to duplicate this behavior. It fixes both of the apps that were having the toolbar problem, and in the case of fpga_editor, it supports rebar and the toolbar continues to work. And I have tested it on a half dozen other apps, and all seem to be working fine.

I guess most other hotels is pretty close as well. The simple strategy is often the best.

The memory model

Over on comp.arch.fpga, there has been a discussion (in the thread "exceeding 2GB limits in xilinx") about the memory models of Windoze versus Linux, and whether running a Windows program under wine would impose the Windows memory model on an application. This all comes about because the newest Xilinx software says that to use their newest large devices, a computer needs a minimum of 3GB to run place and route! Apparently Windows allocates 2GB to user space and Linux allocates 3GB (just repeating what has been said by others there). It was mentioned that perhaps running the tools under Linux/wine might allow the tools to have access to the full 3GB available under Linux. In any case, this made me curious, and I was hoping some of the more knowledgable people here might be able to explain how this works under wine. Thanks, Duane

Hello! I saw your patch today and noticed you are really doing W<-->A conversion for the version* functions. Is there a special reason for this? The A<-->W conversion in shlwapi is only for systems lacking the W-functions like win95 so it's not nessesary to do this for us. Agenda for wineconf

Below is an up to date agenda for wineconf 2002. Things are coming together great and it should be a information filled event. Thanks to all the attendees who are going to make this event worthwhile through their valuable presentations. Be sure and get that haircut before coming because my sources tell me there will be 3 video cameras capturing this event for later broadcasting. We have two full days planned (March 15th-16th). The sessions will go from 9-5 on both Friday and Saturday. I think all of the international attendees are coming in on Thurs, so they'll be rested up to start at 9am Friday morning. Both days, breakfast pastries will be provided at the conference premises along with lunch. Dinners will be within walking distance on Friday and Saturday. We're also planning on providing transportation from the airport to hotels on Thurs for our out of town guests. So a rental cars may not be necessary unless you're planning on extra activities on Sunday that aren't part of the conference. As for the conference sessions, the attendees are the speakers, so we're asking those in attendance to prepare a 30-45 minute presentation meant to educate and inform as well as spur on discussion. If you don't see your name on the list below, please send me a topic you would like to give a presenation on. I've heard from nearly everyone. We have a great conference venue lined up which will have plenty of meeting rooms and state of the art presentation capabilities along with internet access. To give a presentation, you can either bring a laptop to plug into the video projection system or you can email to me your presentation and I will insure that it is on a computer plugged into the projection system for your presentation. There are 2 areas that we'll be focusing on: Business issues - This will be a combination of presentation from companies talking about their business experience with WINE as well as talks on the non-technical issues facing WINE. Wine Technology - There will be some advanced topics as well as some more general overviews. Since (http://www.lpbn.org) will be on hand to shoot video of all the session, our goal is to have a video series that those newer to wine can view at anytime via the net to get up to speed. Alexandre's keynote will set the tone and provide a roadmap for many of the discussions. Alexandre's keynote will kickoff the conference. wineconf: Transport from the hotels to the conferance

There is a few small details left that need clarification. How and when will we get from our hotels to the the conferance? Personally I have booked room at the recommended hotel: Homestead San Diego Mira Mesa So will somebody pick us up at our hotels? Since we have booked hotel ourselves you are not likely to know were we are but still... Anyway, taking a taxi or a cab (or whatever you call it the US) will not be that hard. However, since I guess more than people than I have booked at the recommended hotel "Homestead San Diego Mira Mesa" perhaps we that should agree on some time to meet at some appropriate place at the hotel? What about 7.00 AM in or near the reception? Is that to early or to late? Since the sessions begin at 9.00 AM and some sort of breakfast in served at the conferance getting there early might not be a bad idea. BTW. How early can we arrive at the conferance?
