Any advice on how to debug this?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. The application runs reasonably with builtin comctl32/commctrl but there are some alignment issues which I suspect might be corrected by using the native one. However when I try running with native ones I get two debug consoles and the application continues. (Not a problem). Basically the main program starts two other programs as OLE servers and they load and init commctl32.dll. The stack traces in both cases are similar and indicate to me that the processes have ended up executing data. However by the time I get to disassemble the code referred to by the backtrace the code isn't there any longer. What's my best bet for tracking this down? I've tried winedbg with as many BreakOn.. set as possible but the processes seem to disappear from under the winedbg processes Bill

HEADER order and index issue

Dear all Before I spend days trying to find out, can someone tell me straight off? There is a problem with the comctl32 header control and I want to know which is the correct solution. The result is that columns af the associated list control are sometimes put in the wrong place. Here's why! It is a known issue that the first column of a listctrl is left-justified. Therefore the Microsoft-accepted way to proceded with the list control is to add a blank left column, add the columns after that with whatever justification is desired and then delete the first column. Assume we aren't doing any clever column reordering. As the columns are added their headers' orders are equal to the indices. But then the first is removed. When we get to HEADER_Refresh it goes to display them in the correct order; good. However there is an implicit assumption in the code that given n columns the orders there will be one column with order 0, one with 1, ... one with n-1. So 1. Is that assumption invalid? If so then I'll change the code to display the columns in the specified order, assuming that the orders may not be sequential. 2. Is that assumption valid? If so then I'll change it so that deleting a column will modify the orders of the remaining ones. Bill

Now that Eric P has fixed winehlp I'm sure we can find someone sooner or later that will write a help file for this and other applications at some point. Bad exe

Group, While running tests at my end, I found an odd problem that seems to have developed out of the blue. It seems that only 32 bit dos executables will now run on my system. All of the 16-bit executables that I've been using for the past few years generate 'bad exe' errors. I've redownloaded most of the tree and nothing has fixed this problem. Before I look too deep, is this a problem that anybody else has? It's possible that my local tree has been damaged or that my development tools are not right. Note: Forwarded to wine-devel I'm more in support of us chaning wine rather then adapting win9x calls to ReactOS. That being said I have enough trouble writing a 3 line patch so my voice doesnt count to much..."You guys are the programmers, I just break shit." IMHO the way WINE handles certain things is really fubar. A good example besides MapSL and ConvertToGlobalHandle is the way WINE implements PSAPI. All wine psapi does it convert the toolhelp functions already implemented in to the needed format with a wineserver call or two thrown in. If we are going to use wine and not fork the crap out of it then we should fix the 9xisms as we find them. Currently wine has all sorts of ways for doing things, you have win16 apis being called in some places, ntdll in others and then 9xisms all over the place. So far we have MapSL ConvertToGlobalHandle PSAPI DriectX HAL interfaces ? idunno I guess it comes to what can we do to better share code. Currently there is not a chance in hell of us sharing PSAPI in its current state. I started two bugs in wines bugzilla a few weeks ago regarding it. Mabey we should have a meta-bug for making WINE more NT like in "certain" areas. I dont expect the wine projects to make all sorts of changes just for us and not as they are trying to get a 1.0 release. Anyone got any feedback? Mabey we will get more support for this once David and Jason are done with the basic Windowing. One of the entries in that segment, presumably during the DllEntry, is populated with the address of GetSystemMetrics A second copy of comctl32 then tries to use that address to call GetSystemMetrics Unfortunately the second process has user32 mapped somewhere else and so the call goes somewhere weird and things fall over. Then these bugs can be replaced with a query that returns the bugs that have these keywords. In all cases, the advantages of the alternative methods are: * the above meta-bugs introduce artificial dependencies between bugs * each time a bug changes status, you get an email for the bug, and an email for the corresponding meta-bug * similarly, moving a bug moving from one category to another generates three emails * the new concepts seem a better match Does the above proposal look ok? Hi all, I do apply some patches to the wine source according to some tips in bugs library,and I can input chinese in notepad now. But,every time window was created,will the input method popup.For example,if a message box popped up,the xim will popup as well. It seems that we called the XIM related Xlib function every time new window was created. Would u please give me some suggestions about how to disable create and open XIM while create non-text-input related window? in other word,how to determin the x-window that going to be created is a control that need input method ? Debugger

Hmmm.... I fiddled a bit with winedbg and found it awful to use.... Maybe I'm too comfortable with visual debuggers :-) There's no plan to make a graphical front-end to it, for example extending DDD or better GVD ? I had a look at GVD sources and docs, and it shouldn't be too difficult to add a supported debugger... It has a quite good support for many external debuggers.... I see only une problem on it, as it seems to me that winedbg opens a new xterm and translates his i/o on it, which can confuse GVD as stated in docs. So, 2 questions : 1) - There's a way to instruct winedbg to not change xterm ? 2) - There's a volunteer with enough skills on winedbg that can help me to write GVD patch ? :-) Regards Max

PSDRV question

I've been trying to get Quicken 2000 Deluxe running in wine. After I figured out that it wasn't finding a DLL for the internet connection (and got that fixed), I started testing the second-most important function of Quicken that I need: check printing. All went well until I tried to print a sample check (to verify alignment), at which point Wine crashed into winedbg. I figured out why: When reading the ppd file, it sets up an *InputSlot for ManualFeed (even though it's not really an InputSlot, but most Win programs treat it as one...). The problem was that, in ppd.c, a Name wasn't given to the slot (but a FullName was), so when ps.c tried to output the header for the InputSlot it crashed (since strlen(NULL) causes a crash). I hacked the AddSlot call to name the slot "Manual", and this seems to work OK. The question that I have is, is this the way that it should REALLY get fixed (does the name matter?), or should something else be done? I'd be happy to correct my hack, if necessary. In either case, I can post the patch to sourceforge, once I know "the right way" this should be handled. Thanks for the help, Carl P.S., I added some TRACE() statements to help me debug this. No X11 input events in DGA2 mode

I was trying to run Starcraft under wine in using the X11 DGA2 mode to get a decent frame rate. I tried running it under various versions of wine and got the same result every time. The problem is that when wine runs the game using DGA2 it ignores all input from the keyboard and mouse and so appears to hang. When running the game with DGA2 support disabled (i.e. not running as root) everything works fine but I get a much lower frame rate. I'm new to wine but I had a stab at fixing the problem which as far as I can see is the following: -> wine creates one X11 display connection for each thread and one 'global' display connection to use for various things like DGA2 which it puts in the 'gdi_display' global variable. The thread specific connections get put in x11drv_thread_data structure pointed to by the driver_data pointer in each thread's thread specific structure. -> wine then switches to DGA2 mode if it can and does an 'XSelectInput' to turn on DGA2 input events. It switches to DGA2 mode using the gdi_display connection so all input events will now come through this connection. -> at some point something asks for new X11 events. It goes into the 'X11DRV_MsgWaitForMultipleObjectsEx' function to poll the X11 display connections for each thread. This ends up calling the 'process_events' function in dlls/x11drv/event.c with the 'x11drv_thread_data' structure for each thread. This is the only function that calls 'process_events', which is the only place that calls any X11 event fetching function outside of 'wineclipserv.c' and 'clipping.c' (which seem do something irrelevant to the dga2 problem). -> but process_events can only look at the thread specific X11 display connections since this is the data it gets passed. I cannot find any code which sets up an 'x11drv_thread_data' structure for gdi_display and XNextEvent is only ever called from inside process_events on data->display. Therefore we never poll gdi_display for X11 events at all so I never get any input. I tested this with some debug output code and wine deffinitely never polls gdi_display for events at any time while running the game. X11DRV_MsgWaitForMultipleObjectsEx explicitly does an XFlush on gdi_display as though it is expecting to have to poll it separately, but it never does ... What's bugging me though is that if this is the correct answer then how do any programs work at all in DGA2 mode? Wouldn't any program hang in the same way as soon as wine switched to DGA2 mode? It would be handy if this were fixed in the wine code so I don't have to keep downloading source and patching so can someone who knows more about the code please let me know if they think this is worth submitting as a patch or point me in the right direction if this is on the wrong track? (BTW HTML email is generally sort of frowned on here) Unix doesn't run windows programs. I suggest you actually read some of the documentation at www.winehq.com <http://www.winehq.com> , especially the Winelib stuff. Basically wine is a Unix program that understands the structure of Windows DLLS and exes. Wine itself runs, loads the dlls and exes into memory and executes them. Some DLLS are replaced by plug-compatible unix so's that interface to the lower levels. So CreateBitmap will eventually result in calls into probably X11 code. Hi all: I have a very elementary question. How does the Winodws program run in Unix. For example, i write a program where i call the CreateBitmap() method, what happens. How is a dll called in the unix environment. From what i know, unix dlls are .so files. From the wingdi.h file in the wine\include directory, how does the unix OS know how to resolve the WINAPI call. If i am right, windows dll's are implemented in unix, how is this done. I'm kinda flustered at the moment, would appreciate the help Thanks, Preetham.

Converting resources from A to W and vica versa

Hi list, Returning after a short absence, I have bug 864 to discuss (I have opened it, and will soon be closing it). The problem was that a program I wrote used "ChooseFont" with a resource. I know those are not supported, but when compiled for Unicode (in VC), the program crashed when trying to open the dialog. Investigation revealed that a function called "ChooseFontWtoA" is called, and that, in turn, assumes that lpTemplateName argument is a string. In practice, this argument was actually an int after being handled with "MAKEINTRESOURCE". I will shortly be sending a fix to wine-patches, but I just wanted to draw your attention to the fact that when handling resources, they are not necessarily strings. Failure to recognize this will crash programs. Worst, and this is not the first place I have seen this, this argument is accessed and handled even if the "CF_ENABLETEMPLATE" flag is not set. In other words, an argument that the MSDN promises will not be touched unless a flag is set can crash a program if not set correctly, even if the relevant flag is not set. In short - pay attention, people. Even when implementing stubs, do read through the arguments list and meanings. Shachar

I'd MUCH rather give my money to the Wine project, but this is only an option if I can reasonably hope for a quick turn-around. I'm trying desperately from having to give money to Redmond and incidentally having to maintain a Windows install on her computer :-( Windows would cost me $100, $150 with VMWare. I'll happily donate that to the Wine project, or a Wine developer. It isn't a lot, I know, but if anybody is willing to take this on, please let me know. If it looks like a simple fix, then fine. MS' hidden API

Dear wine developers, I have one question on the development of wine. Long(one or two years) ago I've heard that Microsoft got some hidden APIs in their products of various windows, and they use these APIs in their own applications. I wonder if this is still a problem on their recent product like windows XP. If it is, I guess wine will not be able to run such MS applications which uses hidden APIs. Is this right? And, is wine designed(or its goal is) to run all applications(including MS product and non-MS product) that runs on windows? Please forgive me if this problem has appeared in the past. malloc, heapalloc, etc

Hi all, I've been playing around with the wininet dll to get a windows app I developed running, and I've written a patch that fixes the problems with wininet that I've noticed, but it's an ugly fix and I'd like to get a little clarification about how heap memory is being used in Wine. In dlls/wininet/internet.c InternetOpenUrlA() malloc() is used to put together the HTTP host header in hostreq. The pointer is then passed to HttpAddRequestHeadersA() which creates a buffer with HeapAlloc, copies the contents pointed to by hostreq to it then frees the buffer with HeapFree. Control then passes back to InternetOpenUrlA which does not call free() on the hostreq pointer. So, my question is which is the encouraged way of doing things? HeapAlloc and HeapFree or malloc and free? Also, is the fact that free() was not called on hostreq a bug, or am I missing something? Please be gentle....I'm a Perl programmer, not a C programmer.

Support for 24bpp when DDBLT_KEYSRC etc are set

I am working on implementing the flags under DDBLTFX (Bug 841) and in order to do so I needed to understand how the current code worked. While researching this I came up with this patch for the flags DDBLT_KEYSRC/DDBLT_KEYDEST and company. This patch should be faster then the current code since the switch statement is outside the loop. It also adds support for 24bpp colour. The problem that I have with this is that it assumes stretching in both the x and y directions but from what I understand stretching should only be done if the flag DDBLTFX is set and has the operation DDBLTFX_ARITHSTRETCHY in dwDDFX. The WINE ODBC32 module is merely a wrapper around any suitable Linux ODBC module. For example we use unixODBC. Thus the WINE ODBC module has no real need to access the registry since all the work is being done by the Linux ODBC module. The way that the Linux ODBC module is configure depends upon which one you use. The unixODBC module, for example, uses a odbc.ini and odbcinst.ini file to store its configuration information. Although it does have a graphical configuration tool, with plugins for some database drivers, I prefer to edit the files by hand. That being said, it may be necessary to add some information to the registry for some ODBC-based applications. I do know that Crystal Reports directly accesses the registry for ODBC information rather than asking ODBC itself. HTH Bill

Borland linker and VirtualQuery

Halo, The attached patch (resurrected from) wine-users through google searching fixes indeed the borland command line tools (version 5.5.1 freely downloadable on the internet). Given that I am not familiar with the win32 API, this patch looks hackish and special cased (admitted also by its author, Gerard Patel) but still it is too useful. Since this question has never surfaced to wine-devel I would like to ask what is required for the patch to become acceptable. If it is something doable I will give it a try, otherwise I will file a report in the wine bugzilla database. Any way thanks in adavance. .Bill

Question about --debugmsg +snoop

Is there a way to activate +snoop only for selected dll ??? I think that would help me to find AutoCAD 2000 access violation on startup, isolating the dll where it happens. As stated few msg before, it starts up good with +snoop, but it crashes on very beginning without +snoop. Regards Max

After buying Warcraft 3, and reading on the mailing list that the beta had worked under wine, I decided to try the final version under wine. It installed fine, but won't run. Or rather, when I try to run it, it prints this out, and just sits there: fixme:cdrom:CDROM_GetIdeInterface CD-ROM device with major ID 11 not supported fixme:cdrom:CDROM_GetIdeInterface CD-ROM device with major ID 11 not supported fixme:midi:OSS_MidiInit Synthesizer support MIDI in. Looking in wine dir (~/c/windows) I found the 'missing' fsivba.dll. I think it should have been placed in ~/c/windows/system, or system32, not in ~/c/windows... I think there's again some problem with path handling or something like that, as it was with missing '\\' in the system.reg files some times ago. That problem caused also misplacement of some files, because of the malformed path. Regards Max

I'm forwarding a copy of this to wine-devel and reactos-kernel. The way that I have been doing it is to work out of the WINE tree to and submit changes back to them. I try to take a snapshot of the current WINE tree every few months and that then becomes the -stable branch for ReactOS. If there is a bug in the ReactOS wine any patch needs to be wrapped in a #ifdef __REACTOS__ that way it will be easy for us to submit patches back to wine. The long term goal is to make all of the WINE dlls upgrade able at anytime. So if you have a idea about a better way to do it then please let me know. Our branch is a little odd because it was not tagget right when they first committed it to CVS. It doesnt really matter to much about the version numbers though because we know where changes have been made on the ReactOS side by the #ifdefs. Apps that installs VBA

Installing AutoCAD 14, I get everytimes an error telling that VBA (visual basic for applications) cannot be installed (the messagebox tells a very very meaningful 'error 18' (sigh) and aborts VBA setup). As I've seen that someone is working on visual basic apps (maybe Ann and Jason Edmeades ?), does someone have an idea of the solution ? Regards Max

Wrote an graphical wine.config frontend

Hi Wine-Hackers! I wrote an graphical tool to make the administrations of the config-file easier for those windosen. Currently its only an prototype and isnt very stable. Its written in Java, compiled into native-Unix-binaries and it uses java-gtk as gui-toolkit. Its nearly as fast as C++ but coding is much easier and faster. I added a screenhot, and I hope that nobody's angry about the big download-size :-( My problem is that I dontknow all the wine.config options avaible, I've just implemented all active and all not active (;) options, only the program-specific setting are still not implemented and they wont be implemented in the near future. So is there an overview avaible, which explains all the options aviable in the config? Thx , Linuxhippy

Graphical Configuration-Tool for wine.conf

Hi! I'm one of two web-masters of www.linux-wine.de . Many people in our forum asked for a graphical frontend to the wine.config. And because google didnt find anything, I've just wrote a prototype. Its written in Java, is compiled to a native-Linux program via gcj and uses java-gtk as toolkit. It is nearyl as fast as a C++ program, but coding is much faster und easier. And (for all GNU-fanatics) its fully GPL-compatible.... My problem is, that I dont know all options of the config-file. Till now I only implemented the options which stands in my wine-config, including the ;-Entries. Only the specific-program settings are not iplemented, its too hard to make this part GUI-based (I'm so sorry, but my english is terrible). Is there somewhere an overview over all avaible options? Is such a tool already avaible, or an existing codebase? Please note that Jine (Jawy after the rewrite) isnt ready for use. O.K it does work, but the code is awful and I'm currently working on a rewrite. May I ask wine-questions for this tool at this list? Thx , Linuxhippy

Strange behaviour -- app starts only with --debugmsg+snoop

AutoCAD again ! After finally R14 runs fine, i'm trying with AutoCAD 2000. Setup goes ok (besides usual VBA problem). Starting with 'wine acad' gives a very early error of unhandled access violation. I tried to start it with --debugmsg +snoop to see what happened and, surprise, app starts up quite good. It then hangs much later, but that's another problem. So the question : how it's possible that requesting snoop messages bypasses the initial access violation ? I think that snoop adds only a thunk to calls on native dlls.... Any suggestion appreciated ! Regards Max

This leads to an interesting question. The MSDN states (edited for w2k behaviour but others are teh same): Initial Dir: Pointer to a null terminated string that can specify the initial directory. The algorithm for selecting the initial directory varies on different platforms. Windows 2000: ------------- If lpstrFile contains a path, that path is the initial directory. Otherwise, lpstrInitialDir specifies the initial directory. If lpstrInitialDir is NULL and the current directory contains any files of the specified filter types, the initial directory is the current directory. Otherwise, if the application has used an Open or Save As dialog box in the past, the path most recently used is selected as the initial directory. However, if an application is not run for a long time, its saved selected path will be discarded. *****> Otherwise, the initial directory is the personal files directory of the current user. Otherwise, the initial directory is the Desktop folder. Questions... Windows has the 'personal files' directory set to My Documents - That is why when doing this patch I implemented it that way. If you are saying you would prefer the home directory to be this, then why dont we make the Personal Files registry key always point to the users home directory? We either have complete compatibility eg. files go in ~ which is the Unix methodology, but windows apps looking in \My Documents directly would work, or we can try to slightly unix-ify the windows way and use ~ as the My Documents directory. I'm not convinced a patch should be submitted unless this is addressed. I have no problems assuming my change is not 100% correct, but we dont want a bounce of patches where someone tries to swap it back later to fix a specific unix app. BTW It is not a registry key directly which changes the behaviour, moreover which version of windows is trying to be emulated by Wine at that time. The filedlg95 behavior

I was hoping to perhaps provoke discussion of the new behavior of the file dialog. Prior to this patch: http://www.winehq.com/hypermail/wine-cvs/2002/06/0028.html the default behavior was to start the open file dialog in the current directory. After the patch, the default behavior is to start in the C:\My Documents directory, though this can be changed with a registry key. While this is the default behavior on Windows, I am not sure that wine should copy this behavior so precisely. I personally think that the old behavior was better. I would think that very few Linux users would actually use the C:\My Documents directory. But perhaps my own preferences are coloring my views. I think the command line oriented nature of Linux would call for a occasional differences in behavior. Duane
