right way to compile wine with a "buildroot" DESTDIR is missing

Hi, I have been building wine RPMs for some time now. The way I do is to specify the correct paths to ./configure script (like prefix, mandir, bindir, ...). After building I have to use an ugly make install in orther to install it into another dir that is different from the one. However, talking to some wine developers on #winehq in openprojects network. They state that a ./configure --prefix=<you buildroot>/prefix was enough. That's because wine does not hardcode any %prefix related path. This would simplify a lot the process. However I just checked that wine does hardcode the %prefix dir in the binaries. This is done in dlls/ntdll/ntdll.dll.so and possible at miscemu/wine . AFAIU, this is done to keep the path to the global registries which is the Right Thing to do. So what I really would like to know is which way is the right way to install wine in a dir different than %prefix or /usr/local (default %prefix)? Is there any chance to get a DESTDIR implemented in the Makefiles? []'s Raul Dias

microsoft CFileDialog problem

hi everybody, i am currently working on making a windows program function in wine. it works for the most part, so i'm trying to iron out a few critical bugs. first off... i'm looking at microsoft's CFileDialog class - it is what the standard windows 'open file' and 'save file' dialog windows use. the problem is this: CFileDialog has a built in function called OnFolderChange, that is used to determine whether the user has changed folders in the dialog, whether by double click or what not.. the program i'm working on overrides the CFileDialog class, and includes more code for the OnFolderChange function (and for other functions) for its own purposes. the new OnFolderChange function works perfectly fine in windows, but is completely ignored when using wine - it never even gets called, while the rest of the dialog window retains all of its intended functionality. as a reference, the built in functions OnFileNameChange, GetFolderPath, and others gets overridden successfully. as far as i can tell, the only function that is not working properly is the OnFolderChange function. the overriding of CFileDialog was accomplished by using a hooking procedure provided in the MSDN library. i hope this is enough information, however i don't expect anyone to fully be able to address this issue without seeing the code i'm working on first.thank you for your time! -kyle

Hi all, A patch just submitted to wine-patches changes the rules when building binary packages of WINE for distributions. This is an optional change, so ignoring this email will not break anything, but will result in decreased functionality. During the configure phase ./configure will now check for the availability of the libfribidi header files. These are typically distributed in a package called "libfribidi-dev". I would highly recommend installing this library on the machine you compile the package on, so as to include the option for BiDi support in the resulting binary. If the headers are found during compile time, a run time check is performed whether the libfribidi library is available. If it is not, Wine will continue without BiDi support. If it is, BiDi support will (at some future date, admitably) be enabled. In .deb speak, libfribidi-dev is build recommended for wine src. libfribidi is suggested for wine. Shachar

Except all the general style stuff is in the top word; the only difference between the two styles, the 3, is two TTS_* toolbar style; generally the stuff in the low word is, I believe, control-specific. I have just RPMed wine-20020512-1.i386.rpm and attempted to run several WIN programs (to wit: sol.exe and a proprietary package). Both fail. I am including the entire run/error message from my attempt to run sol.exe below. Being new to WINE, I have no idea where to begin to find the problem. I have annotated the error message with notes. Here are some observations with regard to Window parentage/ownership etc. Clearlt Microsoft documentation is quite out of date and contradictory on the subject these days so we are going to have to experiment and find out what actually happens. We also are going to have to be careful about terminology and not jumping to conclusions. I mean what ther heck are we supposed to think when Spy++ shows a window as a top-level window (by which I mean just below the desktop in the listview that Spy++ uses), tells us that its parent is its owner (a different top-level window) but that "parent" says it has no children. So. 1. GetParent does not necessarily return the same value as GetWindowLong (GWL_HWNDPARENT). I have seen GetParent returning 0 while GetWindowLong returns the same non zero value as GetWindow (GW_OWNER). 2. GetAncestor (GA_PARENT) seems to be the best way to get the "true parent". 3. WIN_CreateWindowEx is currently slightly wrong. I know MSDN says don't mix WS_POPUP and WS_CHILD but if you do then the result is wrong, I believe. However I am loth to fix it and submit the patch because that really messes everything else up so I guess we need a bigger patch first. (Heck, even under windows 98 you can get the kernel to fall over rather easily this way). 4. I don't like the look of GetAncestor (GA_ROOTOWNER). The MSDN documentation suggests that it should return the result of recursively calling GetParent (or should it be recursively calling GetWindowLong (GWL_HWNDPARENT) whereas GetAncestor (GA_ROOT) should return the result of recursively calling GetAncestor (GA_PARENT) (each stopping just before the desktop, of course). (And of course that is definition, not necessarily mechanism) More to follow. Bill

ListView Patch

Hi all, I should maybe have posted this to the patches list, but I would like your comments first. I have fixed a few problems with the ListView control when using icons larger than the sizes returned by the system metrics. This (attached) patch also causes LISTVIEW_Arrange (which was previously a stub) to call the LISTVIEW_AlignTop/Left when appropriate. Please let me know what you think. This is my first time doing any of this, so let me know what I'm doing wrong/right. Cheers Steve

However, there are a few (mostly minor) problems with the ListView control: - When using icons bigger than the sizes returned by SystemParametersInfo(SPI_GETICONMETRICS), the text for the items is not displayed correctly at the bottom of the icon. - When running a program created by C++ Builder 5, clicking on an item in the listview causes an access violation in C++ Builder's VCL library code - it is obviously getting passed an unexpected value. - The amount of text displayed is often far less than is displayed in Windows, making the listbox difficult to use. I have been looking into the ListView code and have hacked a fix for the first and third problem, but I am having a little difficulty understanding the code - the LISTVIEW_INFO struct has both an nItemWidth/nItemHeight pair describing the width/height of each item, and an iconSpacing SIZE struct that seems to do the same. What is the difference in these, where should one be used and where should the other be used? Is anyone actively maintaining the listview code, or should I just carry on hacking until I'm happy with it, and post the changes here? I have created a small test program to demonstrate these problems which I can post if anyone is interested. I must say it's very nice to be able to wade into the code to fix these problems myself rather than waiting for someone else (not) to do it! (Regarding the whole issue of windows reparenting) MSDN keeps going on about windows with the WS_OVERLAPPED style. However surely (since WS_OVERLAPPED=0) every window has such a style these days. Is there something I don't understand? Bill

I fail to open the attached txt file and it complained no such program. EDIT_WM_GetText (in controls/edit.c) is "blindly" setting the last byte of the string buffer being past to it to NULL: textA[count - 1] = 0; /* ensure 0 termination */ Apparently, in this particular case, the buffer size (the 'count' veriable) is not correct, and the location of textA[count - 1] just happens to correspond to the first byte of the Category field, which (obviously) CHANGES IT TO A NULL STRING! Voila! Now, since I have just found this, I have not had a chance to determine of the erroneous value of "count" is a bug in Wine, or in Quicken! Doing so may take an awfully loooooong time, particularly since I don't have the source for Quicken. (Since this does not seem to be a pervasive bug, I'm suspecting Quicken...) So, here's what I see as my choices... 1) Forget the origin of the bug, and change EDIT_WM_GetText to only set the last byte to a NULL only if there is not a NULL byte prior to [count - 1]. I'm guessing the most efficient way (I'm no C guru) would be to change the line to something like: if (strlen(textA) >= count) textA[count - 1] = 0; If this is reasonable, the question that I would have is "What functions should I use in place of the strlen() above [for A and W strings] (or is strlen() good enough for both)?" 2) Take some time to try to track down if the bug is Wine related. I'm willing to spend a day (maybe two) on this, but my gut tells me it's futile. Obviously, if I find a related Wine bug, I'd fix it, which indirectly would fix this issue. But if I don't find a related bug, I guess I would have to revert to (1) anyway... Suggestions?? Comments?? Carl

As usual, I tried to update the cvs version I had before the crash. cvs update -APd the 7 cvs updates that appear on wine-cvs at Aug 12 don't come. Just an FYI but this bug is also what is reported under bug#825 (and 961). I have indicated under 825 a hack which prevents the problem from occurring, and there was a recent discussion where Alexander indicated it may not be correct to actually call SetParent for GWL_HWNDPARENT, which is exactly what my hack changes. Can anyone help me with this? I am trying to track down a problem with our software, relating to Visual Basic and its forms. We launch a container executable which then loads one of hundreds of OCXes (compiled from Visual Basic). One of the things that then happens within those OCXes is that they use the Visual Basic "load" instruction to load a different form in a modal way. Under Windows the form (which is generally larger than the original OCX form) comes up on the main display, with full usability (you can click on windows etc). However under Wine it comes up within the client area of the original and only responds to keyboard input. (Luckily Alt+C maps to the Close button so we can close it). If I use Spy++ under Windows I can see that when the "popup" form is up then its parent is 0 but its owner is the ThunderRT6UserControlDC under the ATL window that is the container. Under Wine if I watch the CreateWindow calls I see that the ThunderRT6FormDC parented by the ThunderRT6Main and the ThunderRT6UserControlDC parented by a STATIC under the ThunderRT6Main. Unfortunately I know of no way to see what parent was originally specified under windows. I presume that it is unlikely that the parentage was altered after the windows were created. Does anyone know differently? Anyone now what might be going on? Bill

I seems that the problem I noted in bug #931 goes away when "PerfectGraphics" is set to false (????). I tracked the problem down to implementation of PATINVERT in BITBLT_InternalStretchBlt() (in graphics/x11drv/bitblt.c). It check whether 'perfect_graphics' is on and if it is it actually doesn't do the drawing: case PATINVERT: /* 0x5a */ if (perfect_graphics()) break; Maybe I'm missing soemthing here but I think that test should be: case PATINVERT: /* 0x5a */ if (!perfect_graphics()) break; That would give a more logical behaviour where there would not be any drawing errors when "PerfectGraphics" is set to True. (There are other spots where this is used in similar fashion) Another question is why have the "PerfectGraphics" option at all when it produces drawing artifacts? D.

Hi all, As you may know (I make a lot more noise than actual work), I am trying to implement BiDi support for WINE. The most promising place to start seemed to be GetCharacterPlacement, that does everything even remotely BiDi related. The most immediate thing to do was to call GetCharacterPlacement from ExtTextOut in order to do the BiDi rearrenging. In typical MS fashion, however, it seems that this will not work. Despite the fact that you are supposed to be able to call GetCharacterPlacement once, and then call ExtTextOut with the result as many times as necessary (speeding up the process, and suggesting that GetCharacterPlacement can do anything ExtTextOut can do), it seems there is one thing that ExtTextOut is expected to know how to do, and GetCharacterPlacement does not know. For those who are really interested, this is specfying the base directionality of the paragraph. I am pretty sure the way Windows implements this is by having a common parent function used for reordering by both ExtTextOut and GetCharacterPlacement. I think such an arrangment is awfully crude. I was considering an alternative solution, and would like your opinion. What I thought of doing was adding a bit to the flags GetCharacterPlacement gets, which says "right to left paragraph, if you'll be so kind". My question is - how acceptable is such a behaviour. Is that a huge no-no, or is that a harmless little tweak? It goes without saying that I will document the fact that this is a WINE only flag, and that there are unused bits in the GetCharacterPlacement current flags set. Another alternative I was considering was to add a directional push at the start of the string in order to achieve this without changing the algorithm. The problem is that I am not sure what affect this will have on the reordering, not to mention the fact that I will then need to copy and widen the string inside ExtTextOut, which is an inconvinence to say the least. wine + cvs + proxy = ?

Hi all I'd like to stay up-to-date by using cvs on wine. Unfortunately cvs isn't able to go through a proxy if it isn't invisible, I can't enter the proxy info anywhere in cvs (confirmed on cvs mailing list). So I wondered if there is a better solution than to download the wine-snapshots and reinstall the sources every time. Does anyone have similar problems and maybe a solution? Thanks Fabi

Dear friends, I want to bypass WINS client routines and use LMHOSTS as a mean to "resolve" Windows machines names. Sincerly, on Win2k I haven't success, even I setup the c:\winnt\drivers\etc\lmhosts file. But, I need this to work to surpase the Outlook dialog in Wine which say me that there are networking problems and it cannot resolve/find my "exchange_name" server. My desire is to make Outlook Exchange support work on Wine. You, know, if I succeed this, then I'll not be forced to reboot on Windows when I'm at my job. P.S. Her is a partial implementation of ChangeDisplaySettings and friends. It currently works if "Desktop" is set to the size the display is changed to or if Managed=N. For Desktop not the size that the display is changed to the code tries SetWindowPos and XResizeWindow witch work in sawfis but dosent in kde. How does i change the size of the desktop shouldent this work? I haven't got any gut ideas how to implement this in Managed=Y. Does any of you? Dispay size changes does ony take place if xvidmode is used. "Sorry for my bad English" MVH Tommy.

wine ui control hacker?

[please cc: me as not subscribed to list] I was wondering if there was any wine hacker out there who was somewhat of a usenet binary user (for me its my version of tivo, don't have time to watch all the shows I want and vcd quality sucks, so the caps that are posted are useful). Well, the program I really depend on for this is newsbin pro (http://www.newsbin.com) it somewhat works in wine, but many of the ui controls just dont work right, which makes it very difficult to use. I've spoken with the author of the program, and he's interested in seeing the program work well under wine, so would be willing to throw in a license key to a wine developer who could get it working well under wine. The author doesn't want to be inundated with many "I can do it", so he asked me to vet people interested in working on it. you can get a trial version from the url I gave above so you can get an idea of what has to be done to get the program to work well. anyone interested? thanks

making FreeReport work...

Hello! Since 2 days I am trying to get FreeReport working. (http://freereprot.sf.net/) It is important part of an app I am trying to use with wine. Or rather the part that causes the problem :-/ For tests - I created 10-liner app (with Borland C++ Builder) that only uses FR and calls one function from it. It crashes exactly the same way as the big app. I attached the output (it looks terribly in email clients, as the lines are much longer than 80 chars). However the line that starts all the problem is DLL/BPL initialization: 9 0x40d8656e (FREEREPORT.BPL.(a)Fr_prntr@initialization$qqrv+0x2e it than calls 8 0x406051b8 (VCL50.BPL.(a)Printers@TPrinter(a)GetPrinterIndex$qqrv+0x10 and so on... then I am getting: 0x41534d1a (PSDRV_UpdateDevCaps+0x3f2 [init.c:221] in wineps.dll.so): fldcw 0xfffffff8(%ebp) 221 physDev->horzSize = (physDev->horzRes * 25.4) / physDev->logPixelsX; physDev->logPixelsX is equal 0 (I tried to detect it is 0, and avoid error here, but if I do - then some related error was occuring elsewhere, so I belive that one should be fixed first) I have sources to freereport and to vcl, but I was unable to force builder to create BPLs with debug info that could be used with wine. It only creates the info as separate file freereport.tds. I tried year old FR and 3-week, fresh one - with the same result. So I think that is wine's bug. Questions: 1. I seems that the problem I noted in bug #931 goes away when "PerfectGraphics" is set to false (????). I tracked the problem down to implementation of PATINVERT in BITBLT_InternalStretchBlt() (in graphics/x11drv/bitblt.c). It check whether 'perfect_graphics' is on and if it is it actually doesn't do the drawing: case PATINVERT: /* 0x5a */ if (perfect_graphics()) break; Maybe I'm missing soemthing here but I think that test should be: case PATINVERT: /* 0x5a */ if (!perfect_graphics()) break; That would give a more logical behaviour where there would not be any drawing errors when "PerfectGraphics" is set to True. (There are other spots where this is used in similar fashion) Another question is why have the "PerfectGraphics" option at all when it produces drawing artifacts? D.

VDD/VXD in Wine?

Hi We have an application that communicates with some hardware. For this we have virtual device drivers that map some memory. There is also a PCI-Interface dll. Is this possible to work in wine? I recently read that wine is supposed to run most Windows apps but not drivers. We intended to port our application to Linux with the help of wine but now I'm not sure if we can succeed at all. If it's not possible with the Windows drivers is there a way if we make a native Linux kernel module? I'm still at the very beginning of Wine. The app loads but the toolbar is not painted and it crashes as soon as I try to open a file. Well, long way to go... Thanks for any help. Fabi

GDI architecture

Hello I'm tring to understand current wine gdi architecture, and as far as I see its strictly based on and mixed with XWindows. Is it inheritance of early development. Does any one tried ever to rewrite this layer not only to separate dll, but to implement real drivers for graphics rendering. I mean not only connected with core gdi in source but during runtime. With that kind of implementation there would be much easier to implement new backends for graphics ... not only X11 but also on other graphics systems (framebuffers, other systems like beos,atheos). I know that this is big stuff but it gives lots of advantages. Such system sould implement all rendering (text, lines, etc.) in software (aka GDI engine or HEL on Windows) which largely done in wine already, and if driver makes avaluable any methods with other capabilites than raw framebuffer use them. When I've look on aplications with well designed plugins systems, I see that this effort was worth of costs for implementiation. I would like to know if it was discusion about that previously. Hi! I tried Final Fantasy 8 under Wine (no Windows), yesterday. Got it running, but FF8Config refused to start complaining something about MIDI error. Of course no music. OpenGL 'hack' patch

Hi all, To make NWN's model viewer work in Wine, I did the attached patch... Warning, it's not for the faint of heart so ugly it is :-) Basically, the plan is to have two drawable per DC in the X11 driver, one for 'normal' drawings, the other for OpenGL drawings, the latter being the one associated with the window when goind a CLIPSIBLINGS GetDCEx. Now to do this 'nicely', the 'use ExtEscape to store data' method is not the right one (but it works :-) ). So my current plan is to really separate all the X11 stuff into the X11DRV and to have a 'portable' opengl32.dll library. Now my question is 'how to do this properly' ? Is extending the 'dc' function pointer array with all the needed OpenGL functions a way (even if these functions are NOT GDI functions but pure OpenGL) ? The problem with this solution is that I would need to use the 'DC_GetDCPtr' function outside of GDI (and that may break DLL separation). Another solution could be to add all the OpenGL functions as GDI functions, do the DC function pointer thing and then put a forward from all the wgl functions to the GDI32.* functions. Small 'quibble' about GetDCEx

Hi, While hunting down a function to get the HWND associated to a DC (I found it 'WindowFromDC'), I looked at the GetDCEx code, and found this : dce->DCXflags |= DCX_DCEBUSY; (...) if (!USER_Driver.pGetDC( hwnd, hdc, hrgnClip, flags )) hdc = 0; In that case, shouldn't the DCEBUSY flag be 'unset' or something ? I did not submit a patch because I did not know if unsetting would have been enough or if DCE_ReleaseDC should have been called (and, yes, I know, the pGetDC cannot ever return FALSE in the X11 driver, but well, if the error code exists, we should write it properly :-) ). Recent patches introduced a regression error

Hi, According to WRT [1], one of todays patches caused a regression error, picked up by one of the wininet DLL tests. Only, none of the patches seem to have touched wininet. The problem is with the tests at dlls/wininet/tests/http.c lines 117 and 157. The test freezes for up to 4 minutes, then returns the failures. As an act in desperation, I've tried reversing some of the patches (1-4, 6, and 7 from the WRT list) without success. I'm also a little suspicious that this might be something to do with Glasgow (or me :) I've been able to reproduce the problem on two other (local) machines, but I've not tried on any remote machines. I've also tried using earlier cvs versions (from a few days ago), but that build fails the wininet tests too. It would be good if someone could confirm the problem. I am also Cc:ing this patch to wine-devel because I think it shows that there is an issue that deserves a bit of thought: Code formatting. We certainly should not get anal rentative on this, but something like int trn = 1234,i=0; from files/smb.c where even a single line is inconsistent really makes me wonder. Also I am not aware of any coding style that asks for blanks around the assignment but does not use a blank after the comma. New CVS and Agent

Howdy, I just built a new CVS version--the first one in a while. I got caught by the -managed and the -winver options going away--a little searching through the list archives, and the problems were solved! Anyhow, I generally run with two instances of Forte Agent v1.9 open. Since I've built the new CVS, there's a change in behavior that I thought I'd the devel community know about. When pressing the shortcut buttons on the Agent instance that was first opened, nothing happened. When pressing on the buttons in the second instance, they worked normally. I closed the second instance, and the buttons in the first instance now work normally. Perhaps the messages are being captured and sent to the wrong place? (They're not being sent to the wrong instance of Agent.) Also there was no obvious output messages in the console window. That's the only change in behavior I've found so far. It still runs great. Hi! Some time ago I did send the rpcrt patches from ove ported to the cvs. It didn't got included. Are there any special reasons? The epmapper was implemented in the wineserver. Should it be a standalone server? 1) If it would be a win32 process we would need 2 context changes for every call. If it would be a server like the wine-server there would only be 1 context change per call. 2) What IPC should we use locally? We could implement LPC like reactos. 3) We need a process for managing services and COM out-of-process servers (the SCM). Any ideas how to do this? To many questions for one mail? ;-) juergen

Hello All, Last week I sent an email about a problem with a serial printer that used DTS/DTR hardware flow control. I later understood that DTS/DTR was not supported in linux , and therefore not in wine. Linux [and wine] support RTS/CTS hardware flow control. Since the protocols are similar, an ideia that I received was to construct a cable that made the computer think it was using RTS/CTS and the printer think it was using DTR/DTS. Compilation error with newer CVS on glibc -2.0

Hi, guys, since Jul 20 or so I get this compilation error on glibc-2.1.3/linux-2.4.18: gcc -c -I. -I. -I../../include -I../../include -g -O2 -Wall -fno-strength-reduce -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -D__WINE__ -D_REENTRANT -I/usr/X11R6/include -o wrc.o wrc.c In file included from wrc.h:25, from wrc.c:61: wrctypes.h:447: redefinition of `struct user' make[2]: *** [wrc.o] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/disks/part9/home/cracauer/work/cvs-packages-work/stupids/wine/wine/tools/wrc' Wine's definition of struct user is clashing with the one from /usr/include/sys/user.h Now, it appears that /usr/include/sys/user.h (a glibc-2.1.3 file) is in error having this struct in first place, since newer kernels have this struct in asm/user.h. I fixed the problem in my /usr/include, but I guess it is better to use a different name for the struct in Wine to be compatible with this configuration (it's Debian-2.1 with an upgraded kernel). Unless somebody disagrees with that analysis, I'll submit a patch to rename the struct. Suggestions about a suitable name welcome. Martin

Translation wine documentation to other languages

Sorry for crossposting initial message to both lists. I think the topic may be interesting for both - users and developers. Any volunteers to help to translate the documentation to languages other than English? This is very big job, so there can be more than one person, working on the same language. Among responses to my call for volunteers I got response from Pedro Restrepo suggesting his help in Wine localization. See his message below.
