Just curious tony, but if that's the case why doesn't Wine return NTFS all the time? Are there some apps that actually won't run if it returns NTFS at all? Wine, Mozilla & IE ?

Hi ! I've read in the list there is a project about compiling Mozilla under Wine, I think it would be great. Several parts of wine need an IWebBrowser implemtation; CHM support, some applications... One implementation based on the khtml is in the works, but Mozilla does implement it yet ( see http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/mozilla.htm ). Could Mozilla, under Wine or maybe native version, be used as a replacement for the IE IWebBrowser implementation?

If not then I will just submit a patch to remove these checks. Or maybe Wine should store these settings in all known locations? Note that I already removed these tests for SPI_ICONHORIZONTALSPACING and SPI_ICONVERTICALSPACING because for these Windows does not even always store the same value: sometimes it's the value we provide but most of the time that value seems to be multiplied by -15 (resulting in the negative number!). The version info patches + d3d question

Hi, The patches add version info to directx libraries. some games(for instance lucasarts games) wont run without finding a valid version of the directx files. the problem is they dont run even with the patches because they cant get version info from d3dim.dll and probably other d3d dlls. since wine doesnt have these dlls how can wine give these programs the needed info or is it planned to split ddraw in a ddraw and a d3d component? I am getting ready to update the WINE Packagers Guide See : http://www.winehq.com/Docs/wine-pkg/ And the first thing that I noticed was Andreas & Marcus e-mail address were incorrect. Hi! We have a problem here... win9x and winnt have a very different set of ordinal functions exported. We have to decide what we support. At the moment most ordinals functions are win9x style. We should never mix both cases since then both explorer won't run. I think we don't have any chance to get the win9x explorer running. A long time ago I did a lot of explorer debugging and the nt4 explorer was nearly running since it's not as much involved into the booting of the system as the win9x one. So I would suggest to change the ordinals into the nt ones. It would cause some 9x only functions to be removed. The change of shell32.spec should be done in one go. PS: Since I recently started to do some shell32 work again: Who is doing what at the moment? Some ddraw / GDI palette problem

Hi all, In 'old' D3D games, a lot of textures are created paletted... And each of these texture has its own DDraw palette object. And thus each has some GDI memory allocated. This means that after some time, we run out of GDI Heap space due to all these palettes created there : trace:ddraw:Main_DirectDraw_CreatePalette (0x4038ff48)->(00000044,0x406b1340,0x406b1978,(nil)) trace:palette:CreatePalette entries=256 err:local:LOCAL_GetBlock not enough space in GDI heap 01b7 for 1052 bytes Now that problem is fixed in one game (it was due to some bad reference counting is some D3D code fixed in patch 79), but if ever it happens in yet another game, is it possible to increase this space ? dx8 Patches - Question

Just a question, I noticed some of the dx8 patches are not applied - Is it due to the Chrismas backlog where Alexander took a very well deserved break, or because they have slipped through the cracks (or are there problems with them)? Will it help to resubmit them based off the current cvs since there were about 4 chained together each based off the previous one? Jason

Platform is a older MSYS and GCC (3.1 something I think). I'm still getting settled in from getting tied-down so I cant test this on the latest mingw-current. only on dial-up here for now =(. Folks, We have a lot of code in msvcrt headers like so: #define umask _umask #define unlink _unlink #define write _write This breaks C++ that define a write method in a header, and then implement it like so: #include <io.h> void MyClass::write(...) { write(...); } I suggest we turn those defines into inlines, like this: inline int write(int fd, const void* ptr, unsigned int size) { return _write(fd, ptr, size); } Any other solutions? -- Dimi.

Kaleidagraph demo

Hello Wine developers, The one program holding back linux adoption in my lab is the application Kaleidgraph. Kaleidagraph is a graphing application that is avaibable for Windows and Macintosh. I've been trying to use Kaleidgraph with wine (wine-20021219) without a windows installation on the computer. The installation works pretty well: Kaleigraph is installed, only the installer does not exit cleanly but not until it asks about displaying the readme file. Running Kaleidagraph does give quite a few problems. The problems seem to arise from bugs and not missing features in wine. One bug for example is, that almost all menu entries are listed twice ("File Edit Gallery ... Windows Edit Gallery ... Windows Help"). I'd like to help in making this program run by testing with the CVS version and submitting bugs. However, I think it would be easier if someone more experienced looks at the program first and irons out the biggest problems, because they are instantly obvious when you try to run the program with wine. Hi Everybody, I'm currently trying to compile the basic Win32 "Hello world" project that VC6 generates for you using Wine. Currently I'm running winemaker like this: winemaker --nomfc -I/usr/local/wine/include -L/usr/local/wine/lib -ikernel32.lib -iuser32.lib -igdi32.lib -iwinspool.lib -icomdlg32.lib -iadvapi32.lib -ishell32.lib -iole32.lib -ioleaut32.lib -iuuid.lib -iodbc32.lib -iodbccp32.lib /home/john/hello I've also added the header files that would have been found in the StdAfx.h to my main.cpp. This is because Winemaker wouldn't build with StdAfx.h in the directory, so I deleted it. This is the error I now get when I run make ./hellotest.spec:8: Expected name, id, length or ordinal My hellotest.spec looks like this: name hellotest type win32 mode guiexe init WinMain rsrc hellotest.res import kernel32.lib import user32.lib <- line of failure Any Ideas? Dont know if this is right or not as you all know I think configure is a little whore. =P Maybe this should go somewhere else. I have about 12 or 13 other things that need to be fixed when building WINE for Mingw and MSYS and I am tired of doing ./configure CFLAGS="-D__MINGW__ -D_WINDOWS -DWINE_NOWINSOCK" Maybe someone can suggest a better way rather than -DWINE_NOWINSOCK? DirectSound and i810 soundcards

There is a problem with Directsound and i810 soundcards. The test I just sent to wine-patches illustrates it very well. Basically sounds are being played too fast. Here's my understanding of the problem (if my memory and understanding of the logs is correct): When DSound initializes it create a primary sound buffer and invokes winmm to actually get access to a sound device. The default format of the primary buffer is 22050x16x2 (i.e. 22050Hz, 16 bit sound, stereo). This means the device it's going to get will be handled by msacm.drv which will be responsible for performing the conversions on the fly. However during the primary buffer creation DSDB_MapPrimary gets invoked in wineoss and does an mmap of the hardware sound buffer. So when we then play sound in a secondary sound buffer, this sound gets mixed into the primary buffer, but because of the mmap this then goes straight to the sound card with no further conversion. So you end up with a chipmunk sound effect since you play a 22050x16x2 sound at 48000x16x2. I will try to make more tests to confirm this but does it seem to make sense? Should I look in some other direction? Any suggestion about a fix? If you have an i810 soundcard you can reproduce by doing the following: * apply "Add WINETEST_INTERACTIVE" from wine-patches * apply "Add 'audiophile' DirectSound tests" from wine-patches * cd dlls/dsound/tests * make * WINETEST_INTERACTIVE=1 ../../../tools/runtest -P wine -M dsound.dll -T ../../.. -p dsound_test.exe.so dsound.c (you can also set WINETEST_DEBUG=2 to get more debug info about the test's buffer management, though this is probably not relevant here) Alternately, you can download the latest Windows test binaries from my site (http://fgouget.free.fr/wine/winetests.zip) and run them using Wine, or on Windows: set WINETEST_INTERACTIVE=1 dsound_test dsound Actually I would be interested in the results of this test on Windows: * the test tone is usually played three times. Are all three, and especially the first one, at the right pitch? * what is the output of the test? I'm interested in reported capabilities as stated by Windows and Wine for instance (to determine whether the primary buffer is emulated for instance). * what is the primary buffer's default format? 22050x16x2? (that's not supported by the sound card!) * does the winmm test work? set WINETEST_INTERACTIVE=1 winmm_test wave * in particular, what happens when the test tone is played with WAVE_FORMAT_DIRECT on Windows? I created bug 1117, "Make all Wine OLE DLLs self-registerable", and have been working on an implementation. For some reason I can't accept the bug; though I've tried several times, it stays at UNCONFIRMED. What to do about DLLs like ole32.dll that have a native DllRegisterServer but no corresponding DllUnregisterServer? I'm inclined to include it for completeness, though it's unlikely that anyone would ever want to unregister such a basic system DLL. I posted my idea for representing the registration data, accidentally from "jhohm(a)happyhappy.dyndns.org" rather than my usual "jhohm(a)acm.org" (see http://www.winehq.com/hypermail/wine-devel/2002/11/1409.html) but I haven't gotten any responses, not even "looks fine" or "you are a moron". I guess I'll just start submitting patches, then.

Can't find MFC afx.h

Hi Everybody, I'm currently trying to compile the basic Win32 "Hello world" project that VC6 generates for you using Wine. My problem is that when I run ./configure -with-wine=/usr/local/wine It fails with the Message "checking for afx.h .... Could not find the MFC includes" However this file is located in /usr/local/wine/include/mfc. I got afx.h and the other headers by directly copying them from my Dos partition at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VC98\MFC\Include I have even renamed these files to be lowercase. distcc and wine

I saw (reading my referrer logs :-) people were interested in distcc with Wine, so I thought I would add it to distcc's performance benchmark. Across three machines I saw a 2.58x speedup -- details are attached. The machines were all 1GB, 1700MHz Pentium IV with a 100Mbps switched connection. Building on just one took 22m57s, and across all three took 8m53s. There is probably still some scheduling inefficiency here, which I hope to reduce over the next few months. I'm not sure what was happening with the person who saw little change. Perhaps they had distcc misconfigured, or perhaps they hit a bug. Either way I would be interested in hearing the details ($DISTCC_HOSTS, etc) and seeing if I can help fix it. I hope you find ccache and distcc useful. Wine is a cool project. Folks, Just as I thought 'fine, I'll add the #ifdef, and get it over with', this thing comes back to haunt me. For the record, I've delete the previous thread, _and_ the io.h patch from my tree, thinking the issue was put to rest. As you can probably guess, I have the io.h problems in wxWindows, simply because this is what I work on right now. Let me state the problem again: -- When you compile with winegcc, you get these macros: __WINE__, __WIN32__, __UNIX__ -- You want your source to compile with the native libc and/or msvcrt -- You want it portable between Wine/MinGW/Cygwin. So, let's say I do: #ifndef __UNIX__ #include <io.h> #endif Well, this will not work if I want to compile with msvcrt, because __UNIX__ will be defined anyway. So what do I have to test for? I have to define a new symbol (USE_MSVCRT) and test for it #if !defined(__UNIX__) || defined(USE_MSVCRT) #include <io.h> #endif But this is not all! For example, wxWindows includes stuff like this: #include <sys/unistd.h> #include <sys/stat.h> Since they are available in mingw, and cygwin, and in UNIX, but if I want to use msvcrt they conflit with stuff from there! It's a mess. As you can see, the defines alone can make a grown man cry, and this is for a simple include. And I don't even know I've covered all the basis! Problem is that there are already 5 platforms: UNIX, Wine, Cygwin, MinGW, MS. And complexity grows exponentially with the number of platforms and combinations you have to test for. This way lays madness. It is now clear to me why the Cygwin people included io.h. It's so that you can compile with or without the -mno-cygwin switch, and have everything work. The only way for that to happen without ungodly defines and tests, is to have a flat space of include files: a union of MS & Unix files. Even if they are empty! This way you can simply do: #include <unistd.h> #include <io.h> and you make sure you get the access() definition regardless if you use the msvcrt of the libc. I'm not sure what to do. I was hoping to get a include/cygwin and/or a include/mingw directory so we can deal with these problems. I didn't know mingw had Unix headers as well, this complicates matters. Any fresh ideas in this matter are highly appreciated. -- Dimi.

Hi list, Can someone please give me a good place to RTFM what the !$&!% to do with paths that have /?? in them? Can I just give them over to win32 functions, or do I need to do something with them first? Also, does anyone have any docs on "runonce.exe"? I have a very vauge knowledge of what it does, and I could find -q -b mentioned as command lines. Shachar

wxWindows: it's official!

That right, As of today, the patch I've sent a few days ago to the list has been integrated into the tree. Turns out that all those "#include <search.h>" were not needed, so the patch was even smaller than I thought! :) There are some things that need to go into the Wine tree before you can play with the wxWindows thing: 1. Dan's patch that fixes the RECT definition 2. Francois' patch that fixes winsock.h 3. My patch that adds io.h 4. My patch that adds wineg++ 5. My patch for tchar.h I think that's it... (I can't quite tell because I have the big NONAMELESS* patch in my tree). Alexandre, the wxWindows folks are eager to play with it, and have asked me to let them know when they can do so. Not a big deal, but if there are problems with any of these, please let me know so I can address them. -- Dimi.

Hi folks, Last night I had nothing better to do than to cleanup my wxWindows patch. The entire thing is less than 500 lines! This says quite a few things about the maturity of our headers. The changes to the build system are just a few lines changed in src/makeg95.env. In fact, most of those are just documentation changes, and convenience things. *All* interesting changes are just: CC=winegcc CXX=winegcc -xc++ WINDRES=wrc Needless to say, I am sooooo happy! :)))) Below I've included a diffstat of the patch (to give you an idea how few things I had to change), and the patch itself (first to show how trivial the changes are, and second in the hope that my experience doing this port can be of some use to someone else). Supposedly Mac OS X already has the largest installed base of any single *nix distribution and certainly is ahead of Linux on the desktop. So there are easily as many potential users of Wine for Mac OS X as Wine for X86-whatever. And Virtual PC has been popular & successful. Actually, according to figures from Apple and IDC (guess which is more neutral) desktop Linux has at least double and possibly quadruple the installed userbase of MacOS X. I have pointed this out several times when people make statements such as that, and have yet to be refuted, so be careful when saying things like MacOS is "certainly ahead of Linux", as the statistics don't back that up. *shrug* Bear in mind that to actually do a MacOS port would require rewriting quite large parts of Wine even if you still use an X server, and then Windows apps would still look like Windows apps, not Aqua apps. Please don't get discouraged, but you should be aware of how much work it involves before starting. I know nothing of cvs administration, but would it be possible (without too much effort) to add annotation to the web cvs interface? I find that knowing the last time a particular piece of code changed can make regression testing and assorted other tasks happen a lot faster. Stuck in SetMenuItemInfo

Hi, Debugging a crash in IE in the menus, I traced it to this check in SetMenuItemInfoA, apparently trying to stop apps passing in bad data. if ((lpmii->fType & (MF_HILITE|MF_POPUP)) || (lpmii->fState)) { /* QuickTime does pass invalid data into SetMenuItemInfo. * do some of the checks Windows does. */ WARN("Bad masks for type (0x%08x) or state (0x%08x)\n", lpmii->fType,lpmii->fState ); return FALSE; } In particular, it seems to check for a couple of bits set that aren't by IE, this is the function trace in Windows: SetMenuItemInfoW( 0x000B032B 0 TRUE [0x0013E070] -> 44 , MIIM_ID | MIIM_SUBMENU , MFT_BITMAP | MFT_RIGHTORDER , MFS_CHECKED , 3169 , NULL , 0x003C7FC8 , 0x40000064 , 0x003C806C , NULL , 2012758772 , 0x003B0000 ) -> TRUE So as you can see it sets MFT_BITMAP, MFT_RIGHTORDER and MFT_CHECKED, but not HILITE or POPUP. This is where I got stuck. I can't see what this check should actually be, but it's clearly incomplete at the moment, as Windows doesn't return false with this input. I can look into doing this, but is there a reason we can't use -gstabs+ for all compilers? Will some compilers barf with this flag? getting started

Hi everyone, I forget who's advice it was I took, but I went out and bought a few books on windows programming. And I plan to get started trying to help out with the wine project by trying to get the sample applications from the books to run under wine. If nothing else I guess I can let everyone know what it is I can't get working under wine (hopefully everyone welcomes that sort of input). So what I'm wondering now is what I should be using to compile my applications on windows. One of the books I have says all I need is the win32 sdk and I can compile apps. The closest thing I can find on msdn is the microsoft platform sdk, or perhaps the .net sdk. I've installed the microsoft platform sdk core but it doesn't seem to contain nmake.exe like the book I have talks about. So maybe I just need more pieces of the sdk? Or maybe I've installed the wrong thing entirely? I know of some other things I could use like borland's compiler or the bloodshed ide, that uses mingw I believe, but I was thinking it might be better if I stuck with microsoft development apps so everything happens the microsoft way in my programs. So maybe I just need to take one for the team and go out and buy visual studio? Thanks in advance, Glen

Possible Proformence Costs on Non-debug Builds

Why are there 20364 debug messages that get compiled into the code even w/ debug messages turned off? They don't actually do anything when you configure w/ --disable-debug, but shouldn't all those "if"s slow down execution incredibly? Why arn't the "if"s implemented in preprocessor directives? Please CC any replys to boylenate316(a)aol.com, i am using my junk-mail account to send this b/c i cant send e-mails from the AOL website on Linux[IE specific tags probably], and waol.exe insists that i need it to install the dun/ras files and reboot whenever i try to run it under wine. Sound driver autodetection

I've been thinking about implementing sound driver autodetection in wine. On startup wine would try to open a device with each of the drivers until one was opened successfully. This seems pretty simple to implement, I was wondering if there was a dynamic way of detecting the list of drivers to try or whether this list would have to be hardcoded in a c file. Eric, any hints? Agent File Access

Howdy, I'd like to (finally) get around to fixing something that Agent does that's really annoying. When launching programs, it sends a string with backslashes for directory markers instead of forward slashes. Anyhow, if I'm going to start looking at the problem, could someone point me at the right file to begin looking at? I think I asked this some time ago, but I can't seem to find the email. (I remember looking at the code, and since it was a *real* simple fix, it sorta just fell by the way side.) Due to the problems encountered with NVidia drivers running Wine, I want to change my video card to another without NVidia chipset. Could someone who is using fast 3D (who said 'gamer' ? :)) give me some tips to buy another one that have free drivers ? PS : As shown in $SUBJ, wine isnt the only thing that pushes me to change my card. I get crashes in another software like MPlayer video player and X itself. Conformance tests status update

Yesterday I compiled and uploaded new Windows binaries for the conformance tests. The new binaries contain a ton of fixes, in particular for the following tests but there are more: kernel/alloc kernel/format_msg kernel/path kernel/process msvcrt/scanf netapi32/access netapi32/apibuf netapi32/wksta You can find them at the following URL: http://fgouget.free.fr/wine/tests-en.shtml That page will also tell you when the Windows binaries were last updated. However now I need *help* to fix the following test failures. A humble request for help

Hi Everyone, I'm currently working on a thesis investigating how Open Source is affected by the influence of money and the interests of commercial companies. As the WINE efforts is the foundation of companies such as Codeweavers, Transgaming and Lindows, it is interesting to study how their entrance to the scene have affected the community. The thesis as well as research papers surrounding it will be released under the GNU Free Documentation License and as soon as the first drafts are available they will be published so that the community may comment upon it. In order to improve the research, it would be great if you guys could spend a few minutes on this one. I have included below a list of the most active persons on this mailinglist during the year 2002. I have tried to establish their employer as far as e-mail adresses and google could help me out, but there are lots of unknowns, and probably some errors too. So please, send me patches. Also, if you belive that there are others who should be on this list, I've only got one person from Transgaming so far, don't they contribute or are they simply silent on the mailinglist? If there are someone out there who would be willing to answer some more detailed questions, such as how long they've been doing Open Source development as a source of income and how they think it have affected them and their efforts, please drop me a line. [RFC] __WINESRC__ & public headers

Folks, With the current efforts to cleanup our headers on __WINESRC__s, I realized we are actually quite close to 'clean' header, something that should allow us to compile Wine with other headers, such as those from the w32api package that's part of mingw. This is a worthy goal as the compiler will flag problems in our headers (by complaining about different prototypes), as well as in the w32api headers. A win-win situation for the free software world. What do we need to do before we can try this stunt? Well, we need to cleanup our headers of __WINESRC__ tests that modifies them in a incompatible way. Let me be more explicit: 1. Tests that do not allow a file to be included in Wine are OK. If we use other headers, those file will simply be ignored, as they would not be used by Wine. 2. Tests to keep certain things undefined/undeclared in Wine are OK. Such tests simply make the header files a subset of the standard one, and the stuff that's not defined is not used, so all is good. 3. Tests that _add_ stuff to headers are BAD. It's clear that such things will not be present in other headers, and things will not work out as nicely. 4. Tests that modify the behavior of the headers are BAD. Same explanation as above. I will list below things that fall under 3, and 4. Agent crashes and burns

Howdy, It's been a little while since I've updated my CVS and I wanted to get the latest update before breaking things myself. I updated to today's CVS, and Agent would barely load and then crash. I would then get a message from the console saying it couldn't start the debugger (I've since fixed that.) So, in a panic to get my email back (so I'll be able to write this email), I went back a week in the cvs, did a new build and everything is working fine again. So, the bad news is that something since 20021228 has broken things for agent pretty severely. The worse news is that I don't have a traceback. If no one is seeing a simlar prolbem, I could download the latest CVS and try again... One other thing: As I look through the code, and I see how the procedure headers are turned into the auto doc for the web site. Would it be acceptable to refine some of those headers to include comments and return codes and so forth (like WinExec)? And if I find errors in the documentation, is the right thing to do to send a diff for the sgml? Windows XP conformance test update 1/5

Not much to report this time but there is something... strange. kernel32/drive reported the following. C:\winetests>kernel32_test.exe drive drive.c:113: Test failed: GetDiskFreeSpaceA(Z:\): ret=0 GetLastError=53 drive.c:165: Test failed: GetDiskFreeSpaceW(Z): ret=0 GetLastError=53 drive: 156 tests executed, 0 marked as todo, 2 failures. Previously this test passed, so I rebooted to see if the problem went away. After reboot the kernel32 test clamed not to be a valid win32 application. Turns out the size was 0 bytes. I re-extracted the zip file and ran kernel32/drive again. This time is passed. I have not seen the failure before but I did run into the "not a valid win32 application" message before, and the file size was 0 bytes. Normally I would suspect a virus to produce that sort of problem, but I've only seen this happen to the kernel32_test.exe file. I will attempt to find out if it can be reproduced and how. I have an XP laptop as well so I'll try to verify it is not a system specific problem. oleaut32/safearray reports 8 failures but the page only shows 4 failures.
