interesting crash in msvc6.0 setup

Since msvcmaker doesn't support msvc4.0, I'm trying to install msvc6.0 under wine. (Yeah, I know, I should run it under windows, but I'm stubborn.) Interestingly, the setup program puts itself in the background. This means you have to be careful to check with ps that you don't have old wines laying around from the last run, and when logging, you have to make sure all wine processes have exited, else your log file isn't complete yet. Unfortunately, setup fails fairly early. When emulating win9x, it fails before presenting a dialog box -- with a page fault reading from a file handle returned from CreateFile. It looks like it's doing an assembly string search on the Windows file structure pointed to by the handle! I wonder why. Maybe it was an easy way to prevent people from running under Wine :-) We may have to hack wine to make handles be valid pointers; I wonder what magic bytes setup is looking for there. When emulating winnt or winxp, it gets a bit further, but dies with a null pointer access. Oddly enough, adding --debugmsg +relay lets it proceed. It insists on installing Microsoft VM for Java, then tries to reboot. Restarting wine d:setup (this time without --debugmsg) continues properly for a while, but eventually crashes. I think this is confusing and error-prone (close() calls are easily forgotten, leading to rapid fd leak - actually, when looking through the code, I found a number of functions where I had expected a close(), but it was lacking). Moreover, I can't see why that dup() is necessary (any more). If there are still some points in the code where the dup() is really required, I strongly recommend to insert explicit dup()s in the respective functions after calling wine_server_handle_to_fd(). I have carried out a number of IO intensive tests with no problems. I'd like people to test the COMM port stuff, though, and watch the number of file descriptors. Other IO- and Network-bound tests would be very welcome. If this is absolutely dumb, please tell me why. Forwarding to wine-devel, 'cause it's pretty intrusive. Started playing with Wineserver on mingw/cygwin again

well I made it serial.c before I had to run to work. I'm having good luck getting alot of the objects to compile so far I've only had to kill file.c, ptrace.c, request.c and select.c. Getting this to build and run on Windows is going to be a bitch =) gettimeofday, fork and all of fd and networking is going to be the hard part. I've started a tempory header to see what will need to be implemented in libwine if we want to get wineserver up and running on Windows without cygwin. remote app problem: menus go away at wrong time

I was sitting at my wife's XP machine with a spare five minutes, and it suddently came to me that I haven't done enough remote testing of Wine. So I ran wcmd cygwin startx ssh -X mybox ssh mylaptop wine spyxx.exe just to see how well wine would work via two ssh hops on top of x on top of cygwin on top of winxp. First issue: you can't use the menus with the mouse! Sure, they'll pop up, but when you move the mouse down to one of the menu items, the menu goes away. It decides the user really wanted to highlight the toolbar, or something. hi guys, in dlls/icmp/icmp_main.c would it be possible to use system("/bin/ping..."); if not running as uid 0?, (or using pipes if the ouput needs to be parsed) as /bin/ping is obviously usually suid root and if the required options are available as arguments to /bin/ping then wine can do as requested without running as root, this would be useful to me with something im working on. if you guys do consider it a possibility, i would be willing to research it and write the patch, id just like the go-ahead from you :) if you can think of any other way round it, id be greatful to hear your suggestions. _________________________________________________________________ Worried what your kids see online? halflife majorly crashes on me: err:local:LOCAL_GetBlock not enough space in GDI heap 01ff for 112 bytes for thousands of lines, until it eventually pukes and wants to debug. then it tells me: Couldn't start process '148738992 0x84 ' (twice) Why? I've been reading all of the traffic regarding getting explorer to work under WINE or writing a replacement for WINE and thought this would be a good time to chime in. ReactOS is about to release version 0.1.0 this weekend and is starting to include support for basic Windowing and CDrom installing. There has been much discussion on when/if we will reimplement explorer.exe also so maybe we can work together on this as ReactOS is using WINE for large parts of the shell support. Why is IOCTL_CDROM_READ_TOC so slow?

I just realized that IOCTL_CDROM_READ_TOC is used almost everywhere in mcicda and somewhere else, but on the other hand it is as fast as a snail. A 68-track CD took 10 minutes to scan in cdplayer and if you press play, another 10 minutes will pass before it even starts playing! It appears to be a good idea to cache the TOC somewhere, but where and how? Best, Waldeck

common file dialogs

Hi, Is there a reason that: a) The Wine open/save dialog boxes don't show or follow symlinks and b) They show dotfiles? I seem to recall a discussion on wine-devel way back on the topic of dotfiles, but a quick archive search didn't turn up much of use. Well, I'm off to try that. I tried a mv /usr/X11R6/whereverthefontswere/ to a back up dir, then reset xf86 and wine worked fine... I'd like to believe that it was the fonts' fault, but everywhere else they work fine. I dunno my japanese fonts go funky on me sometimes... methinks kappa is a bitmap font? if there's development to be done, then I might be able to send y'all (texas native) a tar.bz2 file of what is messing up. One of the other restrictions I have as far as japanese fonts, is that whenever mozilla is asked to render a bold SHIFT_JIS type font, it gives me blank space. I have seen the same problem myself and managed to fix it, though I can't remember how. I have submitted quite a few patches specific to getting Win2k explorer running on Wine, but they haven't been accepted so far. For a start you could try --dll shlwapi=b and copying over the native shdocvw.dll and browseui.dll and running regsvr32 on them both. Try running with --dll ole32=b to see if it is a COM class that isn't registered and finally try using some of my shell32 and shlwapi patches :) Hope this helps, Rob BTW I have got explorer loaded and displaying a folder but there are no items in the folder view apart from 'Desktop'. I am still trying to work out exactly why this is.

I've played with our MDI application a bit more, and have observed two kinds of bugs under cvs wine: First type: things not drawing, probably because of missing messages (we know the WM_NCPAINT message is AWOL, but it might be something else); 1. One of the "documents" has blank client areas (mentioned previously); these don't ever get drawn. 2. Another of the "documents" has a blank pane initially, but if you diddle around a bit, it does draw. 3. Maximizing any of the "documents" is supposed to make a minimize/maximize/close widget appear on the right-hand side of the toolbar, but it doesn't. Second type: things drawing in the wrong place: 4. The text box at the bottom of a three-panel window has its upper left corner in the right place, but its lower right corner is exactly one scrollbar width inset too far. The scrollbars are inset by that amount, too. That leaves the area where the scrollbars ought to be totally undrawn. spyxx from msvc6.0 crashes repeatably. Here's the recipe: $ wine spyxx.exe click the minimize widget on the client document click the quit widget on the app Bingo, unhandled exception. The traceback looks uninformative, so either the stack is corrupt or it's crashing in the very outer routine. Hi, I'm trying to build OpenSSL using Borland Builder 5 within wine. Installation of Builder has gone fine, ActiveState Perl went on after a bit of fiddling, but I've now hit a small problem. The makefile for OpenSSL attempts to run mkdir, copy, etc. - this results in Borland's make attempting to run (after trying to find copy.exe/com/bat/cmd), the command interpreter found in COMSPEC. But wcmd is only a unix command - there is no windows\system\wcmd.exe Is there already a workaround for this, or can someone point me in the right direction to look at fixing it? -- Jon Bright Lead Programmer, Silicon Circus Ltd. http://www.siliconcircus.com/
