building a windows API database

Francois, I am interested in taking on the "build a database of windows APIs and dependencies" task. I have started work on scripts to scan a windows system and list import/export information. So far I can gather a list of dlls and run dumpbin on them, then parse imports (mostly, I think). I've started with simply printing the parsed output in three columns. The first is the DLL being scanned, the second is the DLL being imported, and the third is API imported. I am unsure of one thing. There is a 1 - 3 character hexadecimal number preceding almost every API. What is it, and should it be included in the output? WWN interview idea

For a while now I've kicked around adding interviews to the Wine Weekly News. Basically how it would work is I'll email a bunch of you some questions, you can answer as many as you'd like, and I'll include the interview in the Wine Weekly News. More than likely there will be a bit of an email exchange so I can put some detail into it. (For instance, I never liked the interviews that were done on kde.org but the ones on kerneltrap.org are excellent.) What I'd like to do is get about ten of them completed first and publish them one at a time. They'll focus mostly on your involvement with Wine and the parts you've worked on. With a little luck they'll get into some of the technical details that someone wouldn't normally see discussed on the mailing list. I guess I'm more interested to hear from you if you _don't_ want to take part. Otherwise I'll assume you're a target. App works almost perfectly, but one MDI screen won't draw

Installing my company's app is still a bear -- the only way I've found to avoid the dreaded "object reference not set" is to run with --debugmsg +ole and redirect to a file (not to the screen, and not to /dev/null). Once installed, the app runs quite well... except for one screen, which remains nearly blank. The MDI frames draw fine, but the contents (which include a hex memory dump area and a tree control) remain blank. Since there were a few richtext fixmes, I threw in native richtext dlls, and that got rid of lots of fixmes, but didn't help the display. qpro200.dll is its own little DLL hell

The VB app I'm trying to bring up (Yardi) installs qpro200.dll. Amusingly, their setup utility crashes on startup if you run it again, in that dll's init routine. Deleting it seems to fix things. Good old DLL hell. trouble with spy++

I am trying out spy++, and it works great under Windows; both the version from MSVC4.0 and MSVC6.0 can display the Windows Messages apps receive on, say, getting focus. Unfortunately, spy++ doesn't seem to do diddly under Wine. I see no messages, no matter what window I ask for details about, or what I do to that window. Font trouble in VB app "Yardi Property Management"

I ran a VB app from http://www.yardi.com with the command $ wine --dll compobj,storage,ole2,ole32=n Y.EXE It initially died because COMPOBJ.DLL didn't implement ordinals COMPOBJ.201 and COMPOBJ.207, so I copied compobj.dll from Windows Me, and that got rid of the crash. However... there's a bit of font corruption in both the splash screen and the opening file dialog box. I'm attaching .png images for both. They're pretty much unreadable. So I reran with --debugmsg +font, and am attaching the log (compressed, this time!). Any suggestions? NSIS visual corruption

Hi, the Nullsoft Installer for Rhymbox (rhymbox.com) displays the following visual corruption: http://www.theoretic.com/mike/nsis-corruption.png because WS_CHILD and WS_CAPTION are set for that window. A few questions: - Is it legal to have WS_CHILD and WS_CAPTION together? I can't think of a time you'd actually need this, but MSDN doesn't say you can't have them together. I'm wondering if the apis silently choose one over the other. - For some reason the inner window (the one with ws_caption set when it shouldn't be) has the same window class as the main window.... is that right? - What normally causes an app to pass in bad styles? I checked and they aren't corrected later..... - The app seems to be linked with the visual c++ GetProcAddress lazy binding system, which means that for instance calls to CreateWindowEx don't show up in the relay trace. It also makes logger/logview rather useless. Is there any way of getting around this? Is wine aware of that trick, or do you then just have to go by the trace messages? thanks -mike

resize client size errors

Hi list, When running the winelib notepad in managed mode, after resizing the main window the scroll bar is not aligned with the right side of the windows as it is upon startup, but is located about one scroll bar's width to the left of the edge. This problem persists even if I change the code to explicitly call "GetClientRect", instead of using the parameters passed on WM_SIZE. I suspect that something in our resize code does not calculate the client area properly, causing this problem. Is there anyone here who wishes to take a look? Shachar

A strange problem with xmpeg

I'm successfully running xmpeg 4.5 with the current snapshot of wine. However, occasionally I get this very strange glitches: 1. When the splash screen desapears, so does all of my desktop. I have to make a Refresh Desktop to get it back. Judging by the log below, I am suspecting of something in the DirectDraw functions. Upon request I will gladily send a (45Kb) screen shot of this. 2. Whenever I click on a radio button for YV12 under Project Options/Post Processing, it crashes with the message wine: main.c:572: DDRAW_width_bpp_to_pitch: Assertion `bpp != 0' failed. A local company wants to run Yardi Professional Property Management, a VB app that doesn't use Access, under Wine. (See http://www.yardi.com.) I tried it under CVS wine as of a few days ago. The __errno_location routine is provided only for backwards compatibility reasons, it is no longer guaranteed that every access to errno calls it. Thus, if you overwrite the implementation of __errno_location, you will only catch *some* errno accesses, not all of them ... Doccumetation issue: "The Service Thread" Does it exist?

This concerns the documentation on thw www.winehq.com website, if it's out of date, then this post may be irrelevant. In the "Wine Developer's Guide" In Section 8.1.4, "The Service thread" Says there exists a service thread, that is implemented in: scheduler/services.c. It also says this thread is used to support the X11 driver's event loop. Firstly, I cannot find the "scheduler/services.c" file. Secondly from my reading of the x11drv code, the X11 event loop is serviced for every call of to X11DRV_MsgWaitForMultipleObjectsEx, which is inturn called by MsgWaitForMultipleObjectsEx, and GetMessage. Therefore, whichever thread is active will service the X11 event queue. It also appears, because each thread has it's own XDisplay object that messages created by a X11 window will only be picked up in the thread that created the window. Am I correct, or have I missed something fundamental? Bye -Rob.

Using the latest Wine release, I see this error repeated over and over: err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x70460350 "?" wait timed out, retrying (60 sec) tid=08436988 when clicking on the CML demo at Adobes SVG demo site. Google indicates that this error can be caused by all sorts of things, one guy said it was due to Wine being a lot slower than Windows. Windows API database

I would be interested in knowing more about the goals of this project. Don't consider me officially working on such a thing just yet. I have no real perl experience, but would like to learn. First I'd like to know more about what I'm up against. 1. Is there a specific set of dll's and exe's we want included in the database or does it need to scan and gather a list of all dll and exe files? That would suggest a clean OS install is necessary. 2. What information should be in the database? (OS ver, name of dll or exe, name of imported dll, APIs and whether they are imported or exported, etc.) 3. Will a single MySQL table do or does it need to be a relational database with multiple tables? 4. Anything else you can tell me about this task?

Well, I don't actually know what is wrong with dos4gw. It is probably something subtle with int21 functions. However, why it hangs is something I haven't checked out. You could try running those programs using DOS32A (DOS/32 Advanced) extender. It seems to work quite well. I just posted a patch that is required to get its installer working, though, so you might have some trouble unpacking it... If you get those games to work under dos32a you will probably find out that Wine SVGA support is lacking. Sacrifice demo & sound.dll

Hi all! I've tried the Sacrifice demo and it complains about sound.dll. Indeed it uses its own 32-bit sound.dll which lies in its directory. Apparently the dll seems to conflict with our 16-bit windows sound.dll I've joined a small log. I tried to add a "sound" entry in the [DllOverrides] section in the config file to force the native to be loaded first but that does not help. Any idea ? Thanks in advance. Hi, The latest version of newsbin 4.1B5 refuses to run, displaying "debugger or monitoring tool detected". LockFile support

I have an old, nasty application that uses the Paradox database engine. This app attempts to lock the database files using LockFile. Now, it USED to work under Wine. It no longer does. The program coughs up an error "No access to directory", and stderr shows a bunch of "LockFile not supported in server" errors. Did the behavior of LockFile change in the past couple of months? Are there plans to add LockFile support into Wine?

Installshield 6 crash: ole trouble

So, how's that Installshield 6 support coming along? :-) The company I work for uses Installshield to package up its windows stuff. Today I tried running its installer under cvs Wine, and shortly after it started running IKernel.exe, it dropped me into the wine debugger. dos4gw stub exec failed

Hi I have some dos games that want to exec dos4gw.exe when starting. but this seems to fail. I hope i read the debug messages correctly and the comment from file:Win32HandleToDosFileHandle is still valid. what happens is dos:int21 wants to open file with the dos handle and then read from it. reading the file calls the function file:ReadFile with the converted win32 file handle which is invalid if the above mentioned comment is correct. Any ideas how to solve this or am I completely off-track here. stupidity: a slighlty less horrible wine tree diff gizmo

Still up to the same old stupid bash tricks... but implemented slightly better. This will still have to be manually maintained to remain useful as wine's directory structure evolves, just like the old "version" of this awfulness. Use at your own (very real) risk as these are almost untested. License is bugroff. This version has better provisions for in-source compilation, runs in only one pass, and is cwd/location independant. LIMITATIONS: o Dangerous if used incautiously. o Breaks if wine changes. o Probably Buggy. o Only supports "." and "/" characters in directory argument. o Creates and destroys temp files named delme.diff and delme2.diff. Whenever I run an InstallShield 6 installer, and it fails early on for any reason (e.g. a file was missing, or the "object reference not set" bug), the error messagebox "Error installing iKernel.exe: (0x1400)" appears. The user clicks 'OK', and the program terminates (after a few seconds). So far so good. But on stderr I see fixme:ole:_xread Read only 0 of 4 bytes from 0x58. fixme:ole:_StubReaderThread Failed with hres 80004005 and I note the presence of one or two stray wine processes and a wineserver: $ ps augxw | grep wine dank 947 14.9 0.3 3172 1236 ? Killing all wine processes, e.g. killall wine lets the next run get past the 0x1400 error.
