GetCurrentObject(hdc,OBJ_BITMAP) should not return zero.

Hi, ( cc'd to the developer list. There might well be some better way to solve the problem.) Eurdora 4.x and 5.x crash when handling a WM_PAINT message. The program gets a hdc from BeginPaint() and does a GetCurrentObject(hdc,OBJ_BITMAP) on that device context. In wine zero is returned and the program crashes as a result of that (step tracing it shows some math on it and then uses the result as a pointer). The same problem was reported on the developer list in: http://www.winehq.com/hypermail/wine-devel/2002/11/0599.htm Since the program does not do anything suspicious between aquiring the dc handle and the GetCurrentObject, Checking under Windows (Win2000). I found that GetCurrentObject(,OBJ_BITMAP) on the the dc returned both by BeginPaint() and CreateDC(), retrieves a non-zero handle. The handle looks genuine, but the bitmap does not appear to be valid (funny dimensions and so). My proposed solution is to do what CreatCompatibleDC already does: load a default bitmap in CreateDC(). As winversion I used win2k (other versions did not help) For the DLL config (builtin/native) I used the default. Using just builtin Dlls gives the trace above. Using native DLLs from WinNt 4.0 did not help. For the Int21 function 7303 (=Get Extended free space) I made a fix according to Info from Ralph Browns interrupt list. I will send a patch for this later. Testing of the Int 21 function 7303 was not possible, because logging information does not change, when the function reports plenty, few or zero disk space. Hopefully somebody can test the Int 21 function 7303 when I send the patch. For the other fixme's: fixme:process:CreateProcessA (E:\EBU6412.exe,...): CREATE_NEW_PROCESS_GROUP ignored fixme:process:CreateProcessA (E:\EBU6412.exe,...): CREATE_DEFAULT_ERROR_MODE ignored fixme:console:SetConsoleCtrlHandler ((nil),1) - no error checking or testing yet I need help. AbiWord display problem

At a demo in front of our LUG, I ran Abiword 0.99 win32 on yesterday's cvs wine. It really impressed the crowd until I tried to load a file, at which point the horribly smeared and splayed text quickly brought the audience back to earth. Has anyone looked at what's up with that? Redraw problems with Installshield 6

Hallo, on and off there are reports of redraw problems. One class of applications that have redraw problems for me are Installshield 6 applications. When in a setup finally the installation begins, only the windows displaying the file(s) installed is updated, the rest of the IKERNEL.exe window isn't updated and so displays a lot of visual artefacts. Old PROGMAN DDE service for creating icons?

Hey folks, I looked around on google for some discussion of this, but didn't find anything. What's the current thinking on making Wine able to handle the DDE messages that old windows 3.1 apps used to use to install program icons? In Microsoft Windows 3.1, this was handled by Progman.exe. In win95 and later, I think it's handled by Explorer.exe. Should I perhaps add a DDE server to the placeholder implementation of explorer I submitted last week? For what it's worth, I looked around for an example of a DDE server written in C, and found one written in 1992: http://www.the-oasis.net/thereef/files/c/ddeml.zip (possibly written by bob.hartman(a)esoft.com, it's hard to tell). I tried installing OpenOffice1.0.2 under Wine today. It started out nicely, but somewhere in the middle, all the fonts got screwed up such that all characters were replaced with boxes. For what it's worth, there are quite a few fixme's. trouble with winmm/tests and winearts.drv

Linux 2.5.59 seems to have broken my ALSA. Rather than worry about fixing it, I guessed that "just waiting" will fix the problem as future releases of either gentoo or linux would probably eventually resolve whatever conflict I have. So, temporarily, I have put aRTS into "OSS/threaded" mode. This successfully uses ALSA's OSS emulation. Then, I activated winearts.drv to use that instead of my usual ALSA. Now, when I run make test, I get a failure. The code from winearts doesn't seem to check the frequency at all. Could this be because it's legitimately supported under aRTS? Either the test is broken, or the driver is broken. I don't know which fix would be the correct one, kill the test, or add a minimum frequency in the driver... Also: It seems odd when test behavior changes due to changes in ~/.wine/config and/or the installed wine. This happened for my RPC tests, although I was able to work around it. Shouldn't the tests always run the same way? Well, after some trivial searching, I found out that VGA register 0x3da reports vertical retrace, horizontal retrace and some light pen stuff: 1xxx = Vertical retrace in progress if set x1xx = Light pen switched on xx1x = Light pen trigger set xxx1 = Either vertical or horizontal retrace in progress if set The original code emulated vertical retrace handling more or less correctly. The patch by Andreas Mohr on the other hand emulates horizontal retrace. Unfortunately, in both cases the other retrace is emulated incorrectly. And I have no idea what to do with light pen bits. So, Andreas, as you now know how to do it properly, can you prepare a patch that: - handles both vertical and horizontal retrace (and does something with light pen) - works even before any VGA mode has been initialized - includes the above documentation about 0x3da bits (so that the next person messing with 0x3da does have some starting point) - does not use inlines unless it really makes a difference (getting screen to update a few milliseconds faster is not worth making the patch longer) -- Jukka Heinonen <http://www.iki.fi/jhei/>

different comments : - don't use C++ comments, not all C compilers understand them - it's better to split patches in small coherent pieces (in your last patch, msvideo issue has nothing to do with msacm) (disclaimer: since I won't be back to my PC until end of week, these answers are quick overviews of the patch, so don't take everything for granted) into the details : - msvideo: fix sounds correct - msacm: the path in format.c sounds correct. the hack around the PCM format was needed to get exactly what native msacm was giving as an expected results. basically, the driver was doing less than what it's supposed to do. it should be tested on native windows if the same is actually needed - msacm: regarding the Query flag, I don't think we need all your changes. While Qt need 10-15 huge base classes to be ported, and platform "tuning " on top level code (platform independent). And, i don't like the port idea, because trolltech use Qt under windows as main product, and porting the GPL version to windows ... In past, i have already done much of Qt (2.x version) porting under windows for a personal project. Reseting X resolution

Hello all, I like to test some DirectX applications from time to time. Problem is that they succed long enough to set the resolution but after that fail. I can Ctrl-C the application and resume working but it's not very practial to work on a 320x200 desktop... How can I restore the resolution? Is there any standard way? Should I just write a few lines of SDL code to set the resolution? Thanks, Luís Marques

All the installshield stuff in the msvc4 installer seems to work -- except the Data Access Objects installer. When you run it, you get to the first screen with a big blue background, but the foreground window never shows up. It's probably there, but invisible, or something. Alt-tab doesn't help, and the blue background is full-screen, so you can't try moving it out of the way. I have to alt-tab and ^C (why that works, I dunno) to get out. Any suggestions? I'm having trouble figuring out how to track this down; win32 gui problems aren't my forte. 1995-era Microsoft MFCKIT installer fails to unpack one of its DLLs

On to the next button on the MSVC4.0 installer: MFC. Clicking it runs d:\mfckit\disk1\setup.exe, which appears to be a win16 executable. It exits quickly under Wine, saying Could not load 'RBHEAP.DLL' required by 'WBRUN20', error= 2 Tsk. Running it under XP works, of course. Now, \mfckit\disk1 does contain the file rbheap.dl_, which presumably something is supposed to unpack on the fly. Hi. I tried to get Worms World Party working with wine (tried latest wine from CVS, winex 2.2.1 ...) and none of these worked. I don't get graphics output of any kind on these. In version 2002-06-05 graphics output is ok, but mouse events seem to be going to /dev/null. I tried different versions and I found out that 2002-06-28 had a fix labeled: "Disable OWN_WINDOW as it no longer works." I tried defining OWN_WINDOW in latest build and the graphics came out ok. But no mouse events. If I undefine OWN_WINDOW, I get the mouse (can hear the menu selection sounds), but no graphics. When I get no graphics, it seems that GDI heap overflows aswell. I'm not a windows expert, so it would take quite long time to find out what is actually the reason for this. placeholder implementation of explorer.exe

I collected my notes about getting msvc4's setup running under Wine at http://www.kegel.com/linux/winelog.html I now have wordpad reading .wri files properly under Wine (needed for the "STL" button). The next problem is that the setup program does ShellExecute(..., "explorer.exe", ".", ...) to pop up an explorer window. Well, wine has Winefile, but not explorer.exe. It looks like the path of least resistance is for me to write a trivial little explorer.exe that just cd's to argv[1] and fires up winefile (which always operates on the current directory). I've written it, and I expect when I add the needed registry entry, it'll make msvc4's setup's "explore this cd" button work fine. Since 33 fps is just half the standard speed (70Hz), all should be fine. But is VGA_Poll_Text running at 33 fps? I suspect this function is too slow (maybe due to the console code). Christian. > > >

Unfortunately, if I do STRING_FOO, "This is a two-line \ string" it looks good in Wine, but it's run together on one line in Windows. Conversely, if I do STRING_FOO, "This is a two-line \n \ string" it looks good in Windows, but it's double-spaced in Wine. Something's fishy here. Launch a unix process from wcmd?

I am trying write scripts to mangle the output of MIDL. After MIDL runs, I need to do a tiny amount of post-processing using UNIX apps (convert from CRLF, for starters). So, I have batch file that I run under wine to invoke MIDL and get the output I want; My question is: is there some way I can invoke my unix shell script from my .bat file in wine under wcmd? If not, perhaps we should squeeze this functionality into Dan's start.exe implementation? How would you feel about this, Dan? Alternatively, if I could invoke my .bat file from the UNIX command-line, this would be just as good... but so far, the only way I have found is to run "wcmd" and type. Does wcmd have some equivalent to bash's "-c" command-line argument? Surely real cmd.exe has some such feature? To prevent that, you need to subscribe the email address you are using to the wine-patches list, otherwise it waits for me to get around to moderating it. Since your previous email appears to have been sent at about midnight my time, there was a bit of a wait before I saw it ;) If you already are subscribed under a different email address, it is perfectly ok to subscribe another. Just go into your user preferences after completing the subscription process and turn On "Disable mail delivery" to prevent getting multiple copies of postings sent to you.
