Current CVS dlls/winmm/winealsa/audio.c issue

I just did a cvs update on the wine tree, and tried to build it. The build failed when trying to link winealsa.drv.spec, with ALSA_widMessage reference undefined. The issue was that the majority of the code in audio.c, including one definition of the function ALSA_widMessage, is conditioned upon #if defined(HAVE_ALSA) && ((SND_LIB_MAJOR == 0 && SND_LIB_MINOR >= 9) || SND_LIB_MAJOR >= 1) Then, near the bottom, another version of ALSA_widMessage is compiled conditioned upon #ifndef HAVE_ALSA So, If HAVE_ALSA is defined, but the rest of the first condition causes it to evaluate to FALSE, neither version of ALSA_widMessage gets compiled. This is apparently what is happening to me. Unfortunately, I have no idea about what *should* be happening here. To get the build to continue, I just made the second half (&& onward) of the first condition into a second condition, added an #else, and copied the version of ALSA_widMessage that gets compiled #ifndef HAVE_ALSA into the #else clause. I'm not sure if ./configure is erroneously setting HAVE_ALSA, or if the SND_LIB_* values are not defined right, or if the #if conditions are wrong in audio.c. (I'd think that the later is at least *part* of the problem...) Sad to say, I don't have the expertise, time, or, quite frankly, the desire to look into this right now. (I'm actually trying to work on a problem with Quicken Delux 2000 printing partial page landscape checks that causes wine to crash which just started with a recent cvs update. But that's another e-mail...) But I thought someone who might be working on this code would be interested in knowing about it. Regards, Carl

new old winetests

Hi there, I've got a more or less standalone version which can run the tests and submit the results to a CGI script, if possible. It also differentiates between libwine and cross builds. I would be grateful for a review. One week point is its integration into the build system: I hacked something together which works, but not sure at all if that's the right way. One other is that I did not notice that the tests return the number of tests failed as their exit status. It adds a couple of lines to the output... Segfault in winedump (spotted by valgrind)

Trying to dump a winme dll, winedump crashed with a segfault. Valgrind gives these results, have someone a clue ? This file comes from a working Win9x installation. Bugs in wine-[pk]thread launch

Hi, Since the NPTL runtime code split wine into two binaries, I've noticed the following problems (ignoring the winedbg breakage): * I get this message in my /var/log/messages file: application bug: wine-pthread(12443) has SIGCHLD set to SIG_IGN but calls wait(). * I often get lots of zombie wine processes, presumably because the parent wine launcher process never reaps the child. I don't know enough to fix either of these problems, but thought I'd report them anyway.... thanks -mike

In your case, the authorization was probably not an issue, because the same user that was running the app from X is the one who started the server (and thus had authorization to do so). As such, nothing besides setting the DISPLAY var is neccessary. If you are going to complicate your setup further, however, I would recommend you RTFM "xauth", as well as the XAUTHORITY environment variable. A simpler but less safe solution is to use "xhost". Problems with x11drv_main.c version 1.83

Hi list, Version 1.83 of dlls/x11drv/x11drv_main.c does not work for me. This patch removes the Display option in the config file, and now I get this error message: "x11drv: Can't open display: " (and no display name given). I've had to revert to version 1.81. Is the display name supposed to be given somewhere else (e.g. the registry) or are things supposed to happen automagically? My system is a debian woody, and XFree86 -version reports 4.1.0.1.

%HOME% - maybe works

It appears that using %HOME% in a drive spec may not work well. I know winecheck says it can't find the drive but if I put in /home/myhome winecheck is happy. Wine doesn't seem to complain about it. Is this a winecheck or Wine problem?

DC ownerdrawn background mode

Hi I have a control derived from CListCtrl. It's completely ownerdrawn. The problem comes when some item is selected. The whole column is drawn selected but the text is drawn with the actual back color instead of transparent. As this is white I get white text on white background... very readable :) I found that the difference between Windows and wine is the background mode. In Windows it's transparent whereas in wine it's opaque. I never change the background mode in my app, I guess I just lived from the fact that it's default transparent. Where is this set? Is this a wrong default parameter in wine or do I explicitly have to set the background mode in my app? I can do this, then it shows ok. But that's another change to my application I have to do because of wine. Fix for debugger breakage

Hi, What is the status of this problem? I tried setting WINELOADER to point to wine-pthread, and while that allowed winedbg to load symbols it spewed loads of errors while doing so. Is there a proper fix for this? BTW I think the recent URL Cache patch broke the IE setup program, I get a crash there calling InterlockedExchange with a null pointer dereference. thanks -mike

Should winedbg be able to load symbols up for non-wine libraries? After the export WINELOADER idea I've got wine symbols but I'm still trying to debug a bizzare crash in winejack where I get: ~/c$ wine sndrec32.exe Could not stat /mnt/fd0 (No such file or directory), ignoring drive A: Segmentation fault and when running under winedbg: *** Invalid address 0x40017f40 (_end+0x2ff03f40) Loaded debug information from ELF '/usr/local/lib/wine/ midimap.drv.so' (0x41090000) In 32-bit mode. Problem with "exec shield" workaround

The "exec shield" workaround (loader/main.c, libs/wine/port.c) has a side-effect of leaving a several thousand byte area of memory allocated just after the reserved pe_area. Under Windows, it is possible to fairly reliably map files or allocate memory explicitly using a fixed address of 0x10000000. The left-over memory from the loader causes programs that rely on this to fail. It seems that this workaround should either be a user setting or should mmap the memory area desired so that it can be removed without leaving behind a small fragment after that area.

default config file creation

I was chatting with Rudolf Kastl(che on #winehq) and he was mentioning the things that he was doing for the rpm package. One of the patches he applies to wine prior to packaging it is a patch that creates local user config files if they don't exist. This helps end users as they don't have to worry about the package maintainer providing valid config files. I thought this sounded like a pretty neat idea to improve usability. The patch currently copies files from /etc/* which means they would need to be installed there during the process. I was wondering if it would make more sense during the compile process to take the default configuration files, config, system.reg, user.reg and userdef.reg and convert these to binary form and compile them into the wine binary itself. We could detect the lack of these files at startup and install them for the user. Another feature could be a command line switch that would rebuild a users config, like: 'wine --rebuild-config' that would reset the users config back to the defaults. Sound like something reasonable? Should we instead be putting the default files somewhere on the users machine and copying them over like the patch does? Chris

Some computers don't have a cd or a floppy, some have 2 cd drives, some don't use distro-standard paths, so drives should be detected on the fly, already we have enough logs from users full of /mnt/floppy not found and /mnt/cdrom not found, and it's not a great feature for 0.9 or 1.0. Winesetuptk does thit very very very well, I'm no engineer but I suppose that something written in tcltk can be easily ported to C. A binary package (But also a normal make install) should install configb and registry in /etc/wine or /usr/share/doc/wine-version/samples or something like that. The user should then start wine, that would look for $HOME/.wine, create it if necesarry, figure out the removable media paths, create a config file on the fly, write it to $HOME/.wine, run 'wine regedit path/to/winedefault.reg' and start normally.This does not require a script, will create a properly working config file, and the default configuration can be tweaked/restored with winecfg, once it's finished. Hi, Please excuse me for bringing this question here. I'm not a developer. I have asked this in a couple of different forums but to date have received no answers. I will copy a message sent earlier this week to Wine-Users and hope for some insights on how to handle it. I have done some Googling around and run across numerous emails about mouse focus, but there doesn't seem to be anything in the Wine-HQ FAQ or Online Docs that tells me how to handle this. The basic issue in a nutshell - How do I configure Wine to not pay attention to the mouse when the Wine window is not in focus? Just in case it matters, I'm using fluxbox on all my systems, but I checked xfce4 and had the same problem. Under Windows I have played a game called Caesar 3 for years. Finally with some help from another wine user, I got it working perfectly (as far as I can tell) on Saturday using an ebuild of WineX on a Gentoo 2.4.20 kernel. The game plays well. I do have one problem when the game resolution and the Wine desktop are not the same size, but we can save that for another email if it's of interest to anyone. Anyway, the way the game works is that it has a play area for building your city. To move around this play area you drag your mouse to the edge of the board and the area scrolls inside the window. When playing the game under Wine, using the first config files I had with WineX and cxoffice that had "DXGrab" = "Y", the mouse stayed inside the Wine desktop and the game always worked fine, but I couldn't use the system for anything else unless I tricked Wine into letting my mouse escape from the desktop trap by using another window in the background. I then found the "DXGrab" option and changed it to "N" and I was able to get my mouse out of my Wine desktop and get email, etc. However, even when the Wine desktop and game are not in focus the mouse position is being fed to the game, so the game scrolls around underneath while I use items and applications on my desktop. How can I configure Wine to not send any mouse position information to the game when the game is not in focus? Right now I cannot take a meaningful screenshot since the game area is drifting around all the time. Thanks in advance, Mark <SNIP>

Input Focus problems with IE

Hello, I am working on a problem with IE where if you start the application in full screen mode: (start IE, change to full screen using view->full screen, shutdown IE, restart IE) the keyboard focus never gets given to the application so you cannot enter any information into forms. Looking into this i found that we where never being given any ClientMessage events to take focus nor any FocusIn events. So the keyboard focus remains on whatever app last had it, such as the terminal used to start IE. A very simple, shotgun, way to solve this is this attached patch. Thinking about windows architecture i was trying to think of a time where a window would receive a button click and would not be given input focus (yes the app may modify focus but it would do that anyway) However this change is HUGE and will affect alot and wanted to bounce it off people before continuing to investigate it. This look ok to people? There is a prepackaged binary that works great for me on slackware if you want it. The standard C library is nicely documented in man pages, why shouldn't Win32 be the same way? I don't think we need another document format or repository (Side note, is it just me, or is the GNU texinfo format the stupidest form of documentation ever invented..) The important thing is, keep the documentation in a format that is easily modifiable by developers. Since most have a copy of CVS laying around that probably means keeping docs in a text format somewhere in the documentation/ directory. The scope of this project is huge. In some ways you're trying to recreate MSDN, and as Greg pointed out that documentation lives on real media in the hands of thousands of people. Yes, it might be nice to replicate that but copyright issues are something you'll need to be aware of. If you rewrite all of it by hand you definitely won't infringe on copyrights, but is there an easier way put it together? Something tells me there's already some resources out there that could be used as a foundation. Also, be sure to read the "Terms of Use" link at the bottom of msdn.microsoft.com. It may as well just say "You can only read our web pages." A quick search on Google alludes to people writing man pages for Win32. hi, wrote to the wine-devel mailing list about this one describing a few words about what's needed to be done to "support" your efforts. documentation. rfc1001.txt and rfc1002.txt - these describe NBT (netbios over tcp) and how to get: - datagrams (port 138) equivalent to UDP - sessions (port 139) equivalent to TCP - names (port 137) LISTEN UP! THIS IS EQUIVALENT TO DYNAMIC-DNS + DHCP! the last one of these needs careful explanation. in light of the recent attempts by the wireless IETF crowd to create a dynamic routing protocol is is _totally_ ironic that netbios got there first _by over twenty years_ - and that there is a FREE implementation for the taking, in nmbd. it's also pretty ironic because they've had to play catch-up with concepts like node status queries in additional extension draft rfcs, and they STILL haven't added the "name conflict" concept which is there to tell anyone that will listen that a name which is attempting to be claimed is being taken by someone else who won't give it back. port 137 _is_ actually dns, so if you happen to know of any wine-licensing compatible DNS client code then you can use that as the basis for your efforts. it's dns but it's extended: the names of the types of packets mean slightly different things; there is additional packet types to represent NAME_REGISTER and NAME_STATUS; there is also a different CNAME type to cope with netbios names; the "dns zone" is there it's called a "scope"; the "dns name" is "compressed" it's a brain-dead misnomer given that the name is actually expanded in some sort of stupid base-4 (no, not base-64, yes, that's right, base-4) encoding scheme that turns a 16-byte space-padded thing into an overbloated 64-byte monster. cifsbrow.txt. eek, it's been a while. have a look at www.cb1.com/~lkcl/ntdom. no, try this: http://www.monyo.com/technical/samba/rfc/ actually, first try this: http://ubiqx.org/cifs/References.html which will give you a better idea of what the other one contains: the ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/developr/drg/CIFS directory appears to be inaccessible, now, which is just typical. basically you should read cifsbrow.txt in conjunction with rfc1001.txt and rfc1002.txt. SKIM THEM! YOU ONLY NEED A MINIMAL SUBSET OF THOSE DOCUMENTS FOR A CLIENT IMPLEMENTATION!!!! the only reason that you need to read those docs - skimmed - is because you need to know what you are going to be communicating with (not implementing, server-side, just connecting to, client-side). all you _really_ need is to be able to do a NetBIOS name query and also to be able to do a couple of SMB queries to obtain lists of servers. THAT IS ALL THAT A CLIENT-SIDE NETWORK NEIGHBOURHOOD BROWSER IS. REALLY! if you're implementing this from scratch, however, expect to allocate about ... mmm ... anywhere between four and eight weeks. i _thoroughly_ recommend that you investigate finding some dns client code to adapt and save yourself some time with decoding port 137. also, while you're at it, you might want to next focus on the contents of the ntnp.doc file which was last available with the ms-dev that contained visual studio 4.3. ntnp.doc stands for nt network provider and it had a companion "client-side" document to describe the other bit that went with it. basically there is a "redirector" protocol on both client _and_ server-side that covers browsing. these two protocols "merge" the network neighbourhoods into one big happy family, such that netware's network neighbourhood can be installed and cooperate happily with the smb network neighbourhood can be installed and cooperate happily with the kerberos-domain-based network neighbourhood and it was all one big happy family yippee. so, whilst you may believe that it is best to implement the network neighbourhood browsing functions as "direct" as possible, if you ever install the "client for netware" under wine and then wonder why it doesn't appear in the network neighbourhood, remember what i said in the paragraph above!! l.

netapi32 and NetBIOS

[sent also to samba-technical mailing list] hi, i've just been alerted to the netbios work in wine (hooray!) as part of an effort to get the network neighbourhood going (yippee!). there is a problem, which i can help overcome. the problem is this: imagine that there is no TCP/IP stack in linux. imagine that TCP/IP runs in two separate user-space services, both of which are GPL'd: the TCP service is a fork-on-demand one that binds to all interfaces, and the UDP service is even worse, it's a single-process running a state machine. let's pretend that neither of the processes understand anything but Web services, and now you want to add SMTP, or worse, HTTPS. you have to consider hard-coding and linking into a paired monolith of programs, and you have a licensing and logistical nightmare that is totally unacceptable for practical purposes. this is the situation that is faced by wine, because samba, which consists of two programs, smbd and nmbd, "controls" the NetBIOS transport, from both a server _and_ (due to some bugs in Windows) also a client perspective. a flawed attempt to make it possible to cut-in to the NetBIOS equivalent of Dynamic-DNS-plus-DHCP (the NBNS system on port 137) was added in 2000 into nmbd, however from the Wine perspective this is totally useless because the code to access the bypass mechanism is GPL'd (tdb - trivial database). happily there is a convenient way round the mess, because it is possible to create the equivalent of a "Network Address Translation" service, and working code along these lines, which maintained a state machine of NetBIOS connections, was created over three years ago. nmbd needs to talk via this NAT service, so does nmblookup and, once the code is all there, so does Wine's Network Neighbourhood browsing code. at present, all you have to do to get the Wine "Network Neighbourhood" code to work is to disable samba, which is going to be totally impractical for most people. it is not _yet_ necessary for such a service to be created, but by the time the NetBIOS code in wine is released, it will _become_ necessary. if anyone wants to sponsor me [pay money] to revive the experiments i made in late 1999 / early 2000 in order to implement a NetBIOS "NAT" service, please contact me. l. -- -- expecting email to be received and understood is a bit like picking up the telephone and immediately dialing without checking for a dial-tone; speaking immediately without listening for either an answer or ring-tone; hanging up immediately and then expecting someone to call you (and to be able to call you). -- every day, people send out email expecting it to be received without being tampered with, read by other people, delayed or simply - without prejudice but lots of incompetence - destroyed. -- please therefore treat email more like you would a CB radio to communicate across the world (via relaying stations): ask and expect people to confirm receipt; send nothing that you don't mind everyone in the world knowing about...

Extended window flag

Hi I have an application where I get the styles from a window with GetWindowLong(m_hWnd, GWL_EXSTYLE); In Windows I get 0x00000110 but in wine I get 0x40000110. From the wine headers (mine seem to old) I get this means 'managed by the system'. Is this something wine specific? Do I need to pay attention to this? If it's a valid Windows flag why isn't it set in Windows? If it's just wine specific can I just mask it out? Thanks bye Fabi

Wine Segmentation fault

Hi I have a problem with starting wine itself. After trying the CodeWeavers wine I wanted to get clean again and removed everything I could find only slightly wine related (/usr/bin, /usr/local... etc). I even removed my cvs of wine of a few days ago. Then I made a fresh checkout and did the complete install with wineinstall. But still after this whole procedure I cannot start wine. Any ideas?
