Middleware regression test suites, e.g. ACE

The idea of using middleware test suites to test Wine has come up before, I'm sure, but while looking for real world uses of overlapped I/O to named pipes for my named pipe conformance test, I noticed a good candidate. ACE is a set of object-oriented wrappers around operating system primitives, See http://www.cs.wustl.edu/~schmidt/ACE.html I think it's cruft (hey, it's c++ :-), but in spite of that, it is the basis of a whole lot of software, some very, very good. Ace has a largish set of regression tests which, being tests of a fairly thin OS abstraction layer, would be an almost perfect match for Wine's needs. See http://cvs.doc.wustl.edu/ace-cvs.cgi/ACE_wrappers/tests/README?rev=4.25 for more info about their regression tests. Can someone with a beefy machine and time on their hands give this a shot under Wine? Presumably you'd build everything with msvc, then run the tests under Wine. Warning: ACE is huge, and will hurt your head if you're not prepared. Resources and more with Darwin

Hi all! I am trying to build wine onto Max OS X/Darwin. I am getting trouble with windres and the *.res files. I would like to know if it would be possible to have winelib running without those resources, I mean, could I build a program and link it fine without those resources? In a second time I would like to know if you plan to use wrc as the only (without windres) resource manager. I have read in the list something like that, could you give me the confirmation? Also I would like to know in which measure is the Elf file format implicated in wine (in opposition to darwin's mach-o). Thanks, Pierre

POSIX / pthreads / wineserver - can I help?

Hi all, I have been following for a few months now the recent glibc and nptl changes. How glibc now eliminated it's own version of wineserver in it's thread implementation with nptl. I have also read up on the difficulties the mono people have with linking to wine due to pthreads. I am a gentoo developer with some spare time. I recently came across your pending problem when we put glibc-2.3.2-pre1 into our unstable branch. I have read up on some of the wine-devel email archives. I have a machine setup with the 2.5 kernel and nptl to do some wine development on! I have also noticed the winex problems outlined at http://www.transgaming.com/papers/shmserver.html I figured a proper solution to the wine thread thing would also for the most part solve that problem also as most wineserver calls like mutexes, thread signalling which take up the CPU time can be migrated to glibc and thus the new 2.5 kernel by using futexes and the new thread syscalls and tls. This is especially true after I read the functions in scheduler/client.c, reading / writing to a pipe per syscall! I am not that experienced a developer, but I am useful. I have started reading up the wine source code and understand basics of the wineserver message passing and the TEB / tls system. I know little about windows programming though. Any hint on what I can work on, help, to get this working again? My idea is to alter wine so that it runs on any 100% ish POSIX threading system, aka glibc, and thus offload many tasks to the system library and solve the difficulties for good. This may be difficult / impossible esp. for windows only syscalls, but for those the Winex shm idea may work, with minimal errno hacking. (as the errno can be set by the calling thread ). Any ideas where I can start ? Stefan

WineLib Application

Hi ALL, I've made WineLib applicatiion with COM support. The first problem is: when I try to call Release() method for interfaces, I have unhandled exception. But I have to clean memory by myself! It seems to me that WineLib Releases all interfaces before me. The second problem: How can I package my application to install it on another computer? Can I avoid Wine installation on that computer? x11drv, ntdll separation

Hi I was wanting to do some work on x11drv dll separation. The last remaining dll separation between x11drv and ntdll is VIRTUAL_SetFaultHandler. This is called from X11DRV_DIB_CreateDIBSection, where it tries to set the fault handler to X11DRV_DIB_FaultHandler, with addr=dm.dmBits and arg=res. From reading the code it seems that this is done because it is not known whether the calling app requires read or write access to the data in bmp. If the app then tries to read or write and doesn't have the appropriate access, this will generate an exception which will then raise the X11DRV_DIB_FaultHandler which would then set the appropriate access, in a way that ensures data gets handled correctly. I presume I'm misunderstanding this, because looking at MSDN for CreateDIBSection, it says: The CreateDIBSection function creates a device-independent bitmap (DIB) that applications can write to directly. and further down... Windows NT: You need to guarantee that the GDI subsystem has completed any drawing to a bitmap created by CreateDIBSection before you draw to the bitmap yourself. Access to the bitmap must be synchronized. Do this by calling the GdiFlush function. So it would seem apps could always be given read-write access to this bitmap. Why is the special fault handler needed? What is the best way to approach getting rid of it? David

Wine 0.9 config applets?

Anybody know what the status of these are? I think it makes sense to start pro-actively targetting 0.9 tasks, and having control panel applets for Wine seems like a good idea. Hmmm, do we even have a control panel? OpenGL woes

I've got a strange behavior with OpenGL: - an app A, tries to load another app B - on B startup, in x11drv init, the OpenGL initialization goes havoc: after the dl_open is made, fs:teb gets corrupted (ie gets changed) the point where this change is made varies over time (I assume, the OpenGL lib creates a thread, and depending on thread sync, it happens at various points) - more interesting, the second time one tries to launch B from A, it succeeds (in that case the corruption doesn't occur) those "features" didn't appear before Alexandre latest fd changes to the server, but I don't think that's a bug in there. It looks more like a timing/sync issue that the latest changes uncovered, but it likely existed before and where less prone to happen my OpenGL libs are from nvidia. Does anyone know what libGL does behind our back ? is there we can do against it ? A+ -- Eric Pouech
