How difficult would it be to make the equivalent of Windows Terminal Server with Wine?

What I would like to be able to deploy would be a system which runs multiple Win32 compatible desktops and multiple logins on a server, with the clients accessing the desktops via RDP or ICA protocols. How many of the pieces required to accomplish that already exist, and what pieces have yet to be built? A quick search on freshmeat shows me a few different rdp clients, so it looks like the protocol spec is known. What would be involved in creating a RDP server that shows up as a video driver as far as the win32 programs are concerned?

Have I missed something? Yep. If using Linux 2.6 kernel and recent pthread library, threads share the same pid and they must be signalled using tkill and not kill. The only place which knows how to correctly signal threads is send_thread_signal function in server/ptrace.c. So, the easy way to fix signalling is to use Windows thread identifier for identifying dosvm thread instead of pids (which don't work anyway) and add to wineserver a handler that just calls send_thread_signal, which I guess is what you have been doing, anyway. Now, I have tried this approach and it seems to work. I have some prototype implementation lying around but I was thinking about doing something more complicated at the time, like using SIGUSR2 handler for doing Win32 remote operations discussed earlier on wine-devel, because signal handler is probably running in the correct context for doing this kind of things but I guess locking issues are going to be pretty complicated so it is probably better to just fix dosvm issues with a simple mechanism and not worry about anything else. So, feel free to submit a patch, if it is simple enough it should get accepted or at least you should get some suggestions how to change the patch in order for it to get accepted. -- Jukka Heinonen <http://www.iki.fi/jhei>

Countering arguments against Wine

I've run into people several times who dislike the fact that I advocate or even work on the Wine project, because they feel that it takes focus away from working on the Linux desktop. I beg to differ, but I've never had a really snappy comeback for them. It happened again today, and this time it occurred to me I should write a page on the topic to organize my thoughts. Listview notify_dispinfoT Messageformat

Hello, Testing showed that the current implementation of notify_dispinfoT doesnt work with W2K. (or at least not with SP4 (: ) The attached patch corrects that our Listview doesnt display anything on native. Following assumption proved to be wrong for the Message LVN_GETDISPINFOW: /* With testing on Windows 2000 it looks like the notify format has nothing to do with this message. It ALWAYS seems to be in ansi format. */ This time, only LVN_*ETDISPINFOW is patched, anything else is untouched. -Anybody please tell me if you see problems with this Fix since i dont want to break things.- Tho

Default System Colors

The last time I submitted a patch to change the default system colors from win95 to winxp (classic), it wasn't merged. I think this was because I didn't discuss it here. So now, should we change the default system colors for WINE, from win95 to winxp (classic)? I really think it looks a lot better with the new colors, as the win95 colors are too dull (MS certainly must have done a lot of research into this). Interesting Installshield failure running Keyhole installer

If you haven't tried the Keyhole demo on Windows yet, give it a shot. It's kind of fun to look at an aerial view of every place you've ever lived, say. You can download it from http://www.keyhole.com Unfortunately, the installer is a no-go under Wine (cvs as of a couple days ago). It puts up a dialog or two ("Starting InstallShield Wizard", "Preparing Setup"), and then stops with an Installshield dialog box "An error (-5006: 0x80004005) has occurred while running the setup..." There's a Report / Detail / OK choice, which is pretty cool. I believe there are also signficant threadings issues on -CURRENT, so overall Wine is hardly, if at all, usable on any version of FreeBSD I have access to, even though I'm still working to keep it at least compilable on FreeBSD 4.9 and 5.2/5.3.
