( I have posted a similiar question in wine-users, don't flame me for doing so, just thinking about this some more, perhaps it may be more a developer question ) Ok, I have a windows app, that runs under wine fine - not quite. This app has a form, with many text field edit boxes on. Quite often these edit boxes already have text values, ie. they are not empty - there is a database behind the form. Anyway, the form shows on the screen, but the text within the edit fields is invisible, until you activate each edit box component. When you leave one edit box to the next, the text remains visible. It seems like the repainting is not working, on initial startup of the form. As a way to debug this database app ( I don't have the source code for it ) I wrote a real basic form app in Visual Studio, with two edit boxes, with data in each. Now this basic app shows the text values immediately on startup. So there must be something different that the database app is not doing. I then ran wine using 'wine --debugmsg +edit programname' for both app's. I see both logging 'Creating ANSI edit control, style = xxxxx' but the style reference is different between apps - I am not sure if this the cause or not. The problem app reports style = 54011104 and the basic app shows style = 50010080. Can somebody explain what this style reference means and how do I force an app to use a certain style of edit box ? What other wine class debugmsg types should I use to narrow down the source of this problem ? Cross compiling Wine with MinGW

Hi, I spent some time cross compiling all of Wine with MinGW according to this recipe: http://winehq.com/?issue=123#Cross-compiling Wine and I thought you might be interested in the results. I can report a bug in Wine's makefiles right away: having those vxd's in subdirectories that end in .vxd causes make to barf on targets like this one: ifsmgr.vxd$(DLLEXT): ifsmgr.vxd/ifsmgr.vxd$(DLLEXT) $(RM) $@ && $(LN_S) ifsmgr.vxd/ifsmgr.vxd$(DLLEXT) $@ because, if $(DLLEXT) is empty, it will try to create a link with a name that's already there as a directory. Of all dlls these don't compile: x11drv kernel32 gdi32 ws2_32 comctl32 icmp iphlapi msvcrt ntdll rpcrt4 shlwapi vnb.vxd wininet wsock32 x11drv, kernel32, gdi32 and ntdll being predictable, because they build directly on X11 and Unix API's. Same goes for the networking related dlls (ws2_32, icmp and iphlpapi, vnb.vxd, wininet, wsock32). msvcrt is close to building because what I saw was mostly header clashes, which could be fixed with proper guards I think. rpcrt4 fails because it uses one Unix API, gettimeofday, and both comctl32 and shlwapi suffer from the bug in dlltool that Dmitry reported and fixed recently. -Hans

Borland C++ 5.5 fails on Link, any ideas?

To be specific, I am in a graphics class where every turnin has to be Windows. :-( Anyways, Borland C++ runs fine until it tries to link the program in question, at which point ilink32.exe just sits there and eats CPU cycles. I've tried letting it run in case it was simply slower than normal due to the Wine layer, but that doesn't seem to be case (I've let it sit for minutes at a time). This occurs no matter how I run it (with wine or either of wineconsole's two modes). I was wondering if there is a way I can help figure out what the problem is so that we can get this bug fixed. Authors.c Won't Compile

Hi, I can't compile authors.c due to some encoding issue with sed. I can generate the authors.c file fine on the command line, but the same command in the Makefile won't generate compilable code due to it terminating the string constant before a UTF-8 character. Sibelius 2

Sibelius is an app for scoring music. Sibelius 1 runs fine with wine. Sibelius 2 crashes on startup. When it crashes there is no useful message, only "Unhandled exception". Using winedbg I have found that Sibelius appears to be following a NULL pointer. I haven't yet managed to track down where it's getting the bad pointer from... any suggestions would be appreciated. I've got some time and energy to try to make this work, but first... Has anyone else worked or is some else currently working on this? What did you find? How far did you get? -- Andrew L. catching first chance exception question

I'm looking at how windows deals with invalid parameters in some of the winmm functions and it raises some questions. Sometimes they will check the parameters and return an error code and sometimes they will let a bad parameter cause a first-chance exception and catch it and return an error code. Is it ok to do a simple NULL pointer check and return an error rather than letting it cause an exception and catching it? If not, what's the best way to catch the exception and return the proper error code?

Hi, I can't really give you any advice on using the X API, but I can tell you that the Win32 and X API are completely different. If you want to support native X apps then you will have to either completely rewrite your Windows program in Linux or you will have to compile the Linux editor as a Winelib app and run it under Wine. I suggest you find a good book on the X API and/or contact the appropriate mailing lists to find out which functions you should use. RPC Update Patch

Hi, I have uploaded the big stubless RPC patch to a website as it is rather large (~120k). You can get it here: http://www.dcs.warwick.ac.uk/~csvmc/rpcrt4_3.diff As you can probably see, a lot of the stuff in this patch is a bit rough around the edges (lack of copyright notice in some files), but it does seem to work for a lot of cases. Rob P.S. It doesn't work for native OLE32 yet because we need some undocumented interfaces in RPCSS.

Authors.c Won't Compile

Hi, I can't compile authors.c due to some encoding issue with sed. I can generate the authors.c file fine on the command line, but the same command in the Makefile won't generate compilable code due to it terminating the string constant before a UTF-8 character. Hey, Wouldn't it be nice to have a description of every screen at the screenshot page of winehq.com? To know what you see, I don't know half the programs I see on those screens. I have made a patch for the site file. The patch needs a a description.txt file inside /images/shots/ in this form: [screen# out of the filename]|[screen dexcription] Example: "1|Wine doing default Windows programs" Next descriptions on a new line. I've not edited the template but the patch adds a $des_[#] to the available vars. This is my first attemp to do something for winehq. So, are you interested in descriptions for screenshots? City governments (especially in Germany and France) have recently begun seriously consider migrating to Linux, and feasibility studies are being done and to some extent are publically available. The study done for Munich, for instance, recognizes that cities need sometimes hundreds of specialized software packages that are not yet available for Linux, and so the cities will have to continue running the Windows versions of those apps for the time being. Yet it suggests using Terminal Services and/or VmWare to run those apps! Clearly, the Wine community needs to make an effort to address the needs of city governments and to get the word out that Wine is a viable option. One important part of this effort should be a mailing list akin to wine-users but dedicated to governmental users of Wine. (wine-users is full of all sorts of topics that might not mix well with staid government workers; some of the games discussed there might even be banned in Germany!) Dedicating a mailing list to this special category of user would greatly increase the signal-to-noise ratio, and should increase the likelihood that government users would feel comfortable about Wine. IMHO the list should allow posts in any language; if nobody can handle the language a post is in, we'll ask the poster to try again in English. The goal here is to avoid intimidating these possibly skittish users; asking them to *always* post in English might scare some of them away. Comments? Hi Mike, I have implemented NdrClientCall/NdrClientCall2 and respective server functions and they are working fairly well (except for no exception handling and no pipe support). The thing that was blocking my submission of the patch was lack of testing. So far I have only tested on simple types and pointers to simple types. Full pointers have been implemented, but are not working correctly. I haven't had time to port my test program to the Wine test framework and test the rest of the types. I have been using references from MSDN on NDR format strings compared with my own tests based on code generated by MIDL. I have also used the OpenGroup DCE specification. (I have URLs for these, but not at hand and you can probably find them in my previous posts on the subject.) I will try to submit the patches tonight.
