Getting the API's for Windows Applications

Is it possible to workout or read the API's that a specific Windows application use ? The theory is that it would be possible to estimate the amount of work needed to get a Windows app to work on Wine by calculating the number of API's that is not working or only half working and estimating the time it would take to correct these API's. By running wine-debug it is possible to get the API's used by an application. I'm hoping that there is some simpler way (although I'm not holding my breath) to read the API's used by an application directly from the .exe or .dll. I'm working on a utility that would collect this information and estimate the number of man hours it would take to get an application running on Wine. Also I'm hoping to build a utility that can collect stats on the API's being used in an application as well. The idea is to build a web page with these statistics for the applications that people want to run on a wine installation. If we can get some participation on the work and completeness of an API. It should be able to build a pretty accurate picture of the amount of work that needs to be done to get an app running under Wine. There is some other interesting side effects that I will not elaborate on until I have something in place (this is very simple but time does not permit. VirtualProtect bug?

I'm trying to write a test that checks for data overruns using VirtualAlloc and VirtualProtect and I think I may have found a bug. Here is the problem: DWORD dwPageSize; BYTE * twoPages, temp; DWORD flOldProtect; twoPages = VirtualAlloc(NULL, 2 * dwPageSize, MEM_RESERVE | MEM_COMMIT, PAGE_READWRITE); res = VirtualProtect(twoPages + dwPageSize, dwPageSize, PAGE_NOACCESS, &flOldProtect); temp = twoPages[dwPageSize + 1]; // should cause exception but doesn't in wine twoPages[dwPageSize + 1] = 0; // does cause exception I would like to write a test to check the exception handling but I don't know how to do a __try and __except in C. Any ideas?

Hello groups, I would like to use Wine to run a Windows compiler "cc" to complie a c file "test.c" on Linux, but I have the problem. <try1> cd /a1/a2 wine -- /usr/local/bin/cc -c /b1/b2/b3/b4/b5/b6/test.c -o test.o Catastrophic error: could not open source file \b1\b2\b3\b4\b5\b6\test.c I try this in another way like this: <try2> cd /a1 wine -- /usr/local/bin/cc -c /b1/b2/b3/b4/b5/b6/test.c -o test.o This works well. GP Install

Hi people, GP-install is a free win32 setup builder. I have been using it in Wine, and it is quite usable except for some irritating (wine) bugs. For example, it forgets that it is installed and before each run needs to be installed again... :-( I read on the GP install website that they have source available, though at a price. Would it be wise if I would mail them and ask whether for Wine they would grant us (or me) free access to their source code, just to patch up Wine a bit? After all, it would also increase their possible install base... Greetings, Robert

You could walk the import table of the executable both the standard and delayed imports and get quite far. dumpbin or whatever it is called can do that. However this will not account for dynamically imported APIs some applications do, to work for instance around API differences between different Windows version. Or another reason might be that a certain API is optional and the app should keep running eventhough that API is not available on the target system. I think to catch those APIs as well only API profiling would help. But it may not be the main issue here as the dynamic runtime linking is most often done to prevent the application from not starting up when the underlyiing API is not present. Rolf Kalbermatter

Ivan, As far as I know, you did not submit also a patch to the default configuration file to add this DLL with 'native' as default (which is a good thing as all the people having a Windows box have this DLL - it could even be installed if someone manages to install DirectX under Wine). Patch for ReadFile with NULL hEvent

According to MSDN, the hEvent member of an OVERLAPPED structure can be NULL: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dllproc/ba… OVERLAPPED ... Members ... hEvent Handle to an event set to the signaled state when the operation has been completed. The calling process must set this member either to zero or a valid event handle before calling any overlapped functions. A program I'm trying to run takes advantage of this, and as a result triggered a lot of these errors from Wine: err:file:GetOverlappedResult lpOverlapped->hEvent was null I wrote a patch that solves this, although it may not be the best solution. If when ReadFile is called overlapped->hEvent is NULL, the patch generates a new event with CreateEventA and sets the structure member to that event. To create a unique name, it uses the hex address of the overlapped structure along with a fairly long string, which is pretty likely to be unique. This works for the application I'm running. If this seems like a good enough solution, I can easily modify the other functions which initiate an overlapped read to do the same. ----ScottG.

StarCraft speed

Чистый листI have Celeron333(a)417+MatroxG200, FC1, kernel 2.6.6 latest Wine and try to speedup StarCraft. IMHO, there is bug in mga video driver or something related that do not allow wine to switch video modes from 16 to 8 bit and Wine falldown to 16->8 emulation. I seen the same in some posts at wine-devel. Week ago I try StarCraft on Athlon 2500(a)3200+ATI Radeon8500, same FC1,Wine and amazing how small speed increase. Using oprofile I track that 99% CPU spend in dib.c in X11DRV_XXXX_8 (sorry don’t remember exactly). Using printf I investigate that 99% CPU used to convert internal wine 8bit with palette 640x480 picture to 16 bit format. There is some asm magic there, I try to speedup it ( lodsb/loop was be slowest instr. in IA86 at least at Pentiun Classic ) and replace by my 8X loop unroll code but nothing changes. The question is: Does anybody look at curent directx 2d code alg ? May be StarCraft engine use some “update region” and current Wine DirectX does not track clip list exactly, so Wine waste CPU converting big 640x480 but not small regions ? And what status of dga2 , why it cannot change color depth ? /dev/mem permissions is 777. I try StarCraft as root and in 8 bit desktop and it load main menu and completely block keyboard and mouse (btw, menu animation work really fast J) so I must press reset to reboot.

OK, I don't know much about it either. A little googling shows: http://www.kerneltraffic.org/wine/wn20030516_170.html#8 makes it sound like __try is hard to do with gcc. You might need to punt and, when compiling with gcc, do nothing unless building in winelib, where you'd set up a handler for SIGSEGV to catch the bad access. http://www.codeproject.com/cpp/transactions.asp?df=100&forumid=11253&exp=0&… has some examples of how __try is used in visual C. (Note that you can download a copy of visual C's commandline compiler free from Microsoft.) What confuses me is, doesn't MinGW support __try? Patch to reduce warnings from comm.c

I have two programs I run under Wine that make use of the serial ports. I get this error and fixme when I run then: err:comm:GetCommState tcgetattr or ioctl error 'Invalid argument' fixme:comm:SetupComm insize 1050 outsize 1050 unimplemented stub I fixed these two in my copy of Wine with the attached patch. First, the GetCommState errors were because I was using a pseudo-tty as the serial port, so setserial didn't work on it. I modified it to ignore errors from setserial that set errno==EINVAL. SetupComm is a function that sets the communications buffer sizes. Wine doesn't have its own communication buffers, so I filled out this function to set the kernel's xmit buffer to the requested amount if possible, and ignore the receive buffer. With these changes, my programs work properly (they worked properly before), and I don't get these complaints from Wine. -----ScottG.

Building WINE with Intel ICC for Linux

Hello, I was able to build WINE with the Intel Compiler for Linux. Intel allows free usage for non-comercial works so I figured I would check and see if changing compilers would yield better performance. According to Intels site it is supposed to give a 15 to 30% speed boost in applications. I was able to compile WINE with only about a 10 line patch. Somehow some of of the inline asm is already getting defined by icc. I am having some problems running graphical applications and maybe it is related to the code I had to disable. If anyone else wants to test I figure this might be a good tool to have if you are porting a Winelib application and want a large performance speed up. I was able to get all of WINE to build but was not able to run any graphical applications due to the crash show in the attached crash.log I was however able to run quite a few console applications including regresion tests which showed failures quite a few failures. If anyone is interested in building WINE with the Intel Compiler I will be happy to test a bit but I dont have a lot of time to put in to it. Attached is my hack.diff and the log from trying to run regedit. 1. Download ICC and run icsvar.sh 2. apply the following patch 3. Configure wine with ./configure CC=icc 4. recompile WINE. I should add that I think taking advantage of a clipboard client such as klipper is really the way to go. I think it may be wasted effort to duplicate what these clipboard clients are already doing. Problem with CreateFileA on "\\\\.\\COM1"

I have a Windows application I'm running under Wine 20040309 that uses the serial port. It was giving error messages when it tried to open the serial port, but strace indicated that Wine wasn't even trying to open up the device I had configured. After some poking around, I found that CreateFileW doesn't recognize this as a device: \\.\COM1 CreateFileW identifies the file as starting with backslashes and a dot, and in files/file.c:358 it uses RtlIsDosDevice to determine whether it's a DOS device name. RtlIsDosDevice returns 0, so at line 360 Wine tries to open \\.\COM1 as a VxD. A small patch (attached) to RtlIsDosDevice allows it to correctly recognize DOS device names. I'm not sure if this is the best possible fix, but with this change my application works properly. ----ScottG.

symbol hiding

i'd just like to mention a small concern i have. hiding symbols might well be a perfectly honest thing to want to do. i personally can't see why, since a list of symbol names doesn't provide much extra help to somebody who wants to disassemble and reverse engineer your code. but i can understand that there might be some circumstances where its desirable. the problem is while hiding symbols doesn't impede a disassembler/reverse engineering effort very much, it does impede attempts to demonstrate the inappropriate use of someone else's code. for this reason, i personally wouldn't feel comfortable asking in a public forum how to go about doing this. your mileage may and probably does vary, of course. --p

Unhandled API Call to Kernel32 Question

Hi All, I am attempting to run a native windows VB6 app (United Devices) in wine, fake windows, but I continue to encounter an unimplemented/unhandled API call "CreateRemoteThread" to kernel32 error with any and all RH distro kernels using any wine version. I was simply wondering if any engineer might be considering working on implementing this call anytime soon. I am in the process of filling a bug report in the hopes an engineer might be motivated to take it on. Here is what my investigation has shown to date regarding this function. The function appears to be properly declared in winbase.h (wine version) as is the already implemented function 'CreateThread' along with the structure type SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES common to both calls. The kernel32.spec file exports show CreateRemoteThread apparently stubbed "@ stub CreateRemoteThread" but the implemented CreateThread shows "@ stdcall CreateThread (ptr long ptr long long ptr)". I wish I knew C and patch submission procedure and would gladly volunteer to work on this one but I only know some VB and am attempting to code this call in a simple VB6 procedure to replicate the error and, if sucessful, will be happy to provide the exe and source to winehq if desired. Any advice where I go from here as I want to dump win, get more hd space but I need this app? Thanks, Roger

We wanted to convert wininet to winsock but Alexandre says this will be to slow on Unix so we need to do something the wininet souce to be able to make it use Unix sockets on Unix and Winsock on the windows port. I dont really understand or know how this should be done as I never really have done any socket programing. If you could fix it for Wininet or point me to a example then I can try and do it for other dlls we might want to share on the Windows port. I am thinking about trying to port our ICMP.dll to Winsock also for the Mingw/ReactOS port but once again it needs to be able to do both Winsock and Unix Sockets. Winelib and MFC and mixing native Windows DLLs

I am trying to build my MFC-based Windows application on Linux. First question - I read in the Winelib user guide that I have to build MFC completely on Winelib as well. Is this really a must? Is there no other alternative? Second question - If my Windows application uses 10 DLLs, do I have to build all these 10 DLLs in addition to the executable on Winelib? Or can I leave the 10 DLLs run in 'native' mode and only convert the executable to be built with Winelib? Thanks in advance, Raghavan

Winelib Native Linux App

I'm a little confused on two points. I wrote a simple windows application just to open a window. It has a file menu with exit on it, and that's about it. All the documentation I read for Winelib suggests that re-compiling the application is the best option as this will give a native linux app that can be run directly. But when I compile this app with winelib it generates "winer.exe.so" which needs to be started with the command "wine winer.exe.so". This isn't my idea of being able to be run directly. Secondly, all my windows apps and DLL's are in Borland Builder (just native Win32 C, no VCL/MFC or other third party products). I have Kylix3 installed. I've managed to re-compile my test app with Kylix and link it to the Wine libraries. When I try and run the resulting executable it complains that it can't fine kernel32.dll.so. Just to test I tried copying kernel32.dll.so to the same place as my test app, same result. I added /usr/lib/wine to ld.so.conf and ran ldconfig, but this doesn't help either. Anyone any ideas on either of these issues. Xnews was treating all mouseclicks as drag-and-drop operations in the newsgroup listview. The problem was that LISTVIEW_TrackMouse was losing the WM_LBUTTONUP message. This patch adds the missing call to DispatchMessage. Exporting symbols

Hi, We need to have a library that links statically to a wine application. The wine application is an .exe.so, so everything becomes in the end an exe.so. The problem we have is that all the symbols are exposed. I have very little experience with Windows, but I understand that with a Windows DLL you can export certain functions, while hiding the others. I know that's also true for the Mac. Is there any way to export only the functions that are called by the code we link to, without exposing the internal workings? Ideally we would like to be able to provide a static library created with ar or ranlib, link that library with other object files to create a .exe.so for wine, but when you do "nm" on the resulting .exe.so you would not see all the inner workings of our library.
