I am mentoring about 14 college students doing this right now for college credit; four are doing it for a whole year, ten are doing it for a single semester. Hi lionel, GL_VERSION isn't pertinent as it contains (only) provider and driver version while GLX_VERSION is really the version string of GLX impl. possibly new regression

Hi, I'm new to the list, so please tell me if I do anything wrong ;). The update from wine-2005-01-11 to wine-2005-02-11 caused a regression with an application I'm trying to get to work. I identified the concrete patch that introduces the problem. Recent CVS update causes Quicken popup problem/Help please

I recently did a CVS update after a fairly long time without one. Afterwards, Quicken 2000 Deluxe has had a problem: When in an account register, as you type the description into a new record, Quicken will pop-up a window showing prior transactions that match what you type. (Quicken calls this Quick Fill. If you press Enter, the transaction is copied into the new record. A VERY nice feature!) The problem is that the pop-up never "goes away", which it should do if (a) your typing causes no prior transaction matches, or (b) you accept the match that is suggested. I have found in the wine debug log that Quicken tries to "get rid" of the popup by setting the popup's rectangle to {0,0;0,0}, which causes the server call to set_window_pos to return with "INVALID_PARAMETER {new_style=00000000}". After adding debug TRACE messages to dlls/x11drv/winpos.c, I have confirmed that the window style just prior to the server call is 94800007 (WS_POPUP | WS_VISIBLE | WS_CLIPSIBLINGS | WS_BORDER | WS_DLGMODALFRAME | WS_DRAGDETECT | WS_NOPARENTNOTIFY). After adding further debugging statements to server/window.c, I have found that the server handler for set_window_pos calls validate_window_rectangles(). Validate_window_rectangles fails because {0,0;0,0} is not within the client's rectangle ({1,1;479,20}), so set_window_pos never gets called. Now, I assume that using a rectangle size of {0,0;0,0} is a valid way to pop-down the popup. Even if not, that appears to be the way Quicken is doing it. I guess my problem is that I have NO CLUE as to how this SHOULD be handled. Should the style be set to (style & ~WS_VISIBLE) when the rectangle is {0,0;0,0}? Should {0,0;0,0} be considered a valid rectangle in validate_window_rectangles()? Should validate_window_rectangles() only get called if the rectangle is not {0,0;0,0}? Or, very possibly, is there something else that should happen? Just to see what happened, I commented out the call to validate_window_rectangles, and the popup disappeared as it should. If anyone has any hints as to what should be done here, I could implement and test this, and send a patch along... As an aside, I noticed on the winehq.org web site that the debugging "quick start" page specifically states that the Debug Channels are not used for the server but the developer's guide does not. And neither suggest how to add debugging messages to the server. Perhaps this could be explained in more detail somewhere? (I could add a section, if the sources of the manual is in CVS, and I knew where they were...) Thanks for the help, Carl

Should winecfg drive detection create device symlinks

Hey, I was wondering if winecfg should create symlinks for devices (dosdevices/d:: -> /dev/cdrom)? If it has to, how should it be implented. I can only see drive device symlinks created here: http://source.winehq.org/source/dlls/kernel/volume.c#L219 But I don't think that's the correct place to do it. Can we maybe have a custom flag in DefineDosDevice? I think that would be the right place to do it. Kind regards, Paul

Hello, using wine-20050111-0.1 (SUSE builds) or a nightly Codeweavers (or an older version of both for that matter) I have the following problem. The application Diamond 2 has the following menu shortcuts Ctrl-N -> New file Ctrl-Shift-N -> Connect atoms unfortunally, I always get a new file, even if I press Shift. Any ideas how to debug? Hello, I'm supposed to choose a topic - and work it out - for a "bachelor project"; Now, at the moment I have no clue, and teachers are discussing what topics to hand; in the mean time, I think maybe it might be interesting to do some wine work in such a form that it's ok for this "bachelor project" :) This project is supposed to be something like 308 hours; and of course, it should be possible to show something interesting at the end of that. About my background, I have a few years of (simple) programming experience (in C and C++, mostly) and most of that was done under linux -- just school programs most of the time; I don't have much experience with X programming and *none at all* with winapi; Is there a "project"/are there "projects" in wine, suitable for this? It's ok if I have to do api learning but ofcourse that'd take a part of those hours; As you can see, it should be some clearly showable (either visible or something in behavior) progress in running windows executables under wine; I hope you can give me a hand finding an interesting topic (and I guess I'll be asking a lot of questions here in the coming weeks if you hand me something I want to work on ;) ) thanks in advance for any ideas regards Joris

Winemaker questions

Hi François, I tried to use winemaker on an app, and I had the following notes about it. 1) Some subdirs were not visited by winemaker, while some others were. Should it visit all of them recursively? Does it stops if there are no source file in a dir (but there are subdirs)? The last point looks like the culprit. 2) Would it be possible to make winemaker understand the i64 postfix and do something about it? I believe the most portable way would be to change from "1234567890i64" to "(((__int64) 12) * ((__int64) 100000000) + ((__int64) 34567890))", as just replacing i64 by LL would be too easy. 3) winemaker changed the name of some .txt files from "a name.txt" to "a_name.txt". Since those are not source code, and their endlines were not unixified, I'm not sure it's such a good idea to touch those files. 4) Would there be a way to transform __try {}/__finally{} blocks to __TRY {}/__FINALLY()? I'm not sure the changes I did are now compilable under MSVC nor MingW. Sidenote about exception.h: you need to use glibc's setjmp.h to get sigsetjmp(), but the default use of winemaker is to use wine's msvcrt's setjmp.h, which doesn't provide it. I sidestepped this by changing #include <setjmp.h> to #include "setjmp.h" and putting a symlink to /usr/include/setjmp.h in the current dir. It works, but it's far from being perfect. Other than that, the app compiled without much problems (but a lot of warnings). Vincent

Pretty Good Solitaire shootout: Wine vs. Crossover

Hi, This application is not in the database, so I started testing prior to adding it and (most likely) maintaining it. Pretty Good Solitaire (PGS) is a Solitaire game compilation; the benefit over native applications is the huge number of Solitaire variants available (the current version has 610 Solitaire games; previous versions have at least 500). Pysol and Aisle Riot don't even come close, especially if you have a favorite variant that is only found in this compilation. The demo of the current version (10.2.0) is available at http://www.goodsol.com/downloads/gdsoltb.html Previous versions (7.2.0, 8.11, 9.2.0) are available at http://www.goodsol.com/downloadpre.html I also have version 9.1.0, which is an old "previous version" no longer available on the main site. Wine: 20050217 Crossover: 4.1 Demo Distribution: SuSE 9.2 Video: ATI binary drivers 8.10.19 under X.org 6.8 Cutting to the chase, the interesting thing here is that: A) the setup runs better under Wine than Crossover (but runs fully in both cases) B) The game itself runs 99.9% perfectly under Crossover (only the Help/Rules are not available) but *does not run at all* under Wine (well, the splash screen shows, but then the app crashes to desktop when trying to open the games selection menu window). I find this fascinating, so I did more tests; fuller information to follow, but I'll ask my question now in the event you don't want to read the rest of what will likely be a very long post: What is the proper information to add to the appdb if the app runs under Crossover but not Wine? Or should I not add the app at all at this time? I'd feel pretty stupid suggesting that one buy CX to run a Solitaire game (even a great compilation such as this), but on the other hand, the app runs flawlessly under CX, which seems worthy of mention if a user does want to run it (since it does not run at all under Wine). Any suggestions would be appreciated. But here's my test results, in case it will help you figure out what the missing link is: ----------------------------------------------------------- Installers: The game (any version) ultimately installs fine under both Wine and Crossover. However, there are differences during install. Wine does not produce any errors when running the installer (unless that tiny, unreadable, and non-resizeable 2nd dialog box is meant to display them), and all text (license and 'readme') is visible in the installer dialogs. Crossover produces duplicate error boxes when the first install screen is extracting/loading (you hit OK on the first, then the duplicate appears, then you hit OK and the install proceeds with no further error dialogs), and no license or 'readme' text is visible in the installer dialogs provided for this purpose. The error is as follows: Access violation at address {version-dependent, specific addresses follow} Read of address 00000000 In version 720 the address is 417930BA In version 8.11 the address is 4173C0BA In version 9.20 the address is also 4173C0BA In version 10.2 the address is 41B880BA Neither Wine nor CX can extract the program icon. However, at some point previous, CX was able to get the icon from at least one version of PGS, as I have a saved icon from PGS 500 (which is version 8.11) that I stored some time ago when I tested this install on an acquaintance's machine while housesitting. Unfortunately, I don't remember what version of CX this person had (dammit). I certainly don't get an icon extracted (even from 8.11) now, with 4.1 Demo, and iirc, no attempted install of later versions of PGS successfully extracted the application icon on the acquaintance's machine (which is likely why I saved the one icon I did get when I cleaned up prior to losing access to the machine). CX creates a full Programs menu folder, containing the application, the website link, and the uninstaller; Wine does not seem to create a Programs menu at all (but this could be a SuSE menu issue). CX creates the desktop icon (using the default CX icon, since the program icon could not be extracted); Wine does not (but this could be because the CX icon is already there and cannot be overwritten). But in both cases, the application is installed. CX: Using one of the CX icons runs the game (any version) perfectly using CX; the splash screen is displayed, and for the first run, the "add player" dialog is displayed and works, for an unregistered first run, the registration dialog is correctly shown and links on that screen correctly open Firefox and display the URL. A slight problem is that when I attempted to enter my registration code, which I keep saved in a text file, using the internal right-click "Paste" operation crashed the program to desktop; but using Shift+Insert to paste the text worked fine. Other than the fact that the Help is not available (nothing happens if you click the "Help" or "Rules" buttons in the main menu or an individual game, which kinda sucks if you want to try a new game but don't know the rules), this application has only a couple of very minor problems, and can be said to be Gold. All text is visible, all options are readable, useable and work properly; I even followed the link from the Options screen and successfully downloaded and installed additional card sets. The only minor issues other than those already mentioned are things I noticed when using earlier PGS versions in the past, but may no longer be relevant with version 10.2.0 (not yet tested): 1) game saving on exit did not quite work properly if you exit immediately after winning a game (on the reward screen, choose exit immediately, or choose New Game, don't do anything, and exit immediately); when you reopen PGS and select the same game variant as you had just been playing, you don't get a 'clean' new game, but instead the game autoplays to some (indeterminate) point in a previous game you had played. If, however, you win a game, select 'New Game', make one move, then exit, when you reopen and select the same game type, the same game # will open, and your one move will be played automatically (because it was properly saved on exit). *This issue no longer appears in version 10.2.0.* 2) Opening Thunderbird (seems to be specific to T-bird, but did not test extensively because I did not realize this seems PGS version-specific) caused a horrendous amount of flickering (non-critical, as it did not hurt the program's function in any way, it was just insanely annoying), but this seems to have been related to PGS versions 9.10 and below; I am not seeing this with 10.2 at all, so it's something I'd have to test as a version issue for the appdb. 3) Sometimes (possibly when the system was under relatively heavy load in some way), drawing of the game screen was imperfect; some "later" cards on the table (meaning cards visible but not playable at the moment due to game rules) were only partially drawn (not critical, since the cards were not playable). The cards were visible (meaning that the space for the partially or not drawn card was clearly "used" by an object not completely visible), and the card itself was present and could be played when it became playable according to the game rules. Playing the card would also cause it to be drawn properly, but the space where it had been was not necessarily redrawn (so that the card under it, which should have become completely visible when the partially-drawn card was moved, had a "bite" taken out of it). This was a non-critical error which could be resolved by using the "Restart" button to redraw the table. Since I don't know what caused this in the first place, I can't test whether it still happens. For all I know, it could be something fixed in the ATI drivers. The point being that Codeweavers could put this on their list of supported apps, insofar as it runs more than well enough to be considered perfect. Wine, though, is a different story. The application does not run. The splash screen is displayed, for what is the "normal" amount of time (~ 5 seconds), but when the splash screen disappears, the game selection menu does not appear in its place (you're returned to the console prompt). So the app fails cleanly, but the output is horrific (because its over 6000 lines long). If there is any further debugging that would be of use, please specify what channels you want, and I'll (figure out how to) do it. [App DB] broken links

Hello, i just noticed that inside the App DB (http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php) pages the links (URL) to the "vendor" of the application are broken. The link is shown correct but if you klick on it the browser will stay on http://appdb.winehq.org/ instead of opening the page of the "vendor". Problems with rsaenh/advapi32 and 'Myst Uru Demo'

Hi, I've download a bunch of demo-apps and this one (http://www.gamershell.com/news/10306.html) has some problems with the builtin rsaenh.dll/advapi32.dll. wpp will currently silently drop non-preprocessor stuff (typedefs, function prototypes etc.) when #including a .c or .h file. However, if you preprocess e.g. a .rc file externally and then feed it to wrc (which in turn will feed it through wpp) the non-preprocessor stuff isn't removed. The patch below changes that, by looking at the filename on the #line directive. If it ends in .c or .h, no output is generated (but the file is still parsed for preproc statements ofcourse). We need this for ReactOS, it doesn't hurt Wine (yes, I've tested it <g>) and including it in Wine would make my monthly job of merging Wine and ReactOS a tad easier. If there are no objections I'll submit to wine-patches in a few days. We also have another change in wpp, which adds support for #include_next (can't take credit for that, Filip Navara wrote it). Since you can't use that #include_next in Wine anyway (not every compiler supports it) I'm not going to bother creating and testing a Wine patch for it. If I misjudged and there is interest in this from the Wine side just let me know. Ge van Geldorp. idea to spot regressions

Hi everyone, I'd like to know what you people think about this idea for the application database: When an application version goes from gold to silver or silver to bronze for example, the AppDB asks the maintainer if he wants to inform wine developpers about this regression and if yes the maintainer has a field where he can enter some comments about the regression and the AppDB sends an e-mail to wine-devel with links to the AppDB entry and the maintainer's comments. This would ease the task for maintainer to report regressions and for developpers to know about them. Looking forward to reading your comments. Jonathan
