Question about TrueType rendering

I'm trying to get winelib working on a platform whose X server doesn't have native support for TrueType fonts. I've configured wine with freetype, but it never seems to display the TrueType fonts. I don't have xfsft or xfstt installed. Should I expect this to work? I don't understand whether Wine uses the freetype library to render TrueType fonts, or if it just uses it for some other purpose (like getting metrics) and still depends on the font server to render the fonts. Hi Alexandre, this patch introduced a regression with FreeSolitaire (free download at www.freesolitaire.com) After switching virtual desktops the program windows gets blanked (see attached image). X11DRV_GetKeyNameText not finding scan code

Hi all, I'm a newbie to wine coding trying to get a particular application to work. It seems to have trouble getting input correctly, and I've traced it to the aforementioned function in dlls/x11drv/keyboard.c. I'm using the wine CVS. The function seems to search through a particular table (keyc2scan) and I think the problem is that the key I am pressing is not in the table -- I've verified that it is not finding a ton of keypresses, although I can't see a console while the app is running so I can associate a particular value with a particular keypress. The general problem seems common among win32 && Xlib, at least. Application developers want to see which key is pressed, but different keys have different meanings/values depending on the current locale and maybe other settings. wine's GetKeyNameText seems to map that particular winapi call to XKeysymToString(XKeycodeToKeysym) calls, which sounds right. The table gets built in X11DRV_InitKeyboard, AFAICT. I can't see anything wrong with the way it is built -- although there is a huge chunk of code #ifdef 0'd out ("/* this breaks VK_OEM_x VKeys in some layout tables [. . .]"). I'm lost as to what minor detail wine seems to be missing here, it seems consistent with MSDN docs I've found online. Are there known issues with this piece of wine? Is anyone exactly sure what this function should be returning (aka "a\0" in lpBuffer and a retval of 1, for pressing the 'a' key? or some code that means 'a'?) ? Most importantly, whats the next step in debugging this? Thanks, -tom

Regression in 'Zoo Tycoon 1 demo'

Hi, as of patch http://cvs.winehq.org/patch.py?id=15812 there is a regression in this demo. The first window stays black and logging shows that the app is looping (so it seems) on WM_PAINT messages: Call window proc 0x453bb0 (hwnd=0x20022,msg=WM_PAINT,wp=00000000,lp=00000000) loads of these at the end of the trace. Does the looping have anything to do with http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-cvs/2004/10/0395.html ? What could be the next step to isolate the problem? Cheers, Paul.

Graphical debugging instead of winedbg

Hi I was trying to get a gui replacement for winedbg as I can never remember how to view memory etc, and saw http://www.winehq.com/site/docs/wine-devel/dbg-others where it talks about using kdbg. I was looking at a simple trap and thought it ideal to test with.... So... 1. Winedbg: I can get to the trap by winedbg program.exe, cont, and it stops and displays everything ok 2. KDBG: I launch winedbg --gdb --no-start program.exe, and it starts and issues the line target remote localhost:32835 I then issue kdbg -r localhost:32835 /usr/local/bin/wine-pthread and get a popup stating "Sorry - KDbg, gdb: Using host libthread_db library "/lib/tls/libthread_db.co.1" with an ok button I click the ok button and the console I launched winedbg in issues various messages about "loads DLL c:\windows\system\user32 etc etc and eventually exception code=0x80000003 but nothing ever happens to the GUI Note this is with cvs and Mandrake 10 if it makes any difference. How do I get the gui support working? 3. Can we use msdev.exe or windbg.exe to debug under wine yet, now the dbghelp is more functional? (I haven't tried for a long time) Regards, Jason

From what I understand, it stems from the fact that in native Windows BeginPaint/EndPaint are technically not nessessary, but Wine thinks they are. I posted a bit of sample code that was given to me by the guy that wrote Foobar2000 about a month ago (look for the topic Foobar2000 Audio Player Regression) that showed some painiting without Begin/End Paint that works fine on native Windows but not Wine -- looking at it now... the sample code is missing a final closing "}", sorry. Regression in x11drv windows handling

If I try to move it again, it moves again further on the bottom right. So I can no longer see my window. However every component in that windows works perfectly. Maxime

[d3dxof] Registering this dll

Hi, any particular reason why d3dxof shouldn't be able to register (itself): @ stdcall -private DllRegisterServer() D3DXOF_DllRegisterServer @ stdcall -private DllUnregisterServer() D3DXOF_DllUnregisterServer is missing from the spec file. I was just playing with dxdiag. Cheers, Paul.

I think you really want the Nt* functions to make direct server calls, and the Rtl* to manipulate a local table. Jeremy, I agree - this is an exciting development. Microsoft's ability to spread FUD and their legal budget are enormous. We need this kind of expert help. Here's an area where I'd like an expert opinion. In the Winelib part of the Wine book, I'd like to include an example of converting a Microsoft VC++ 6.0 MFC application. This is Winelib's primary target, in my opinion. My question is: how far can I go? There are proprietary Microsoft header files that need to be included - does the Microsoft EULA allow disclosure of what these header files are? Or is it only legally safe to say something generic like "....figure out for yourself which header files you need to #include..."? In general, I think Microsoft has to tread lightly on the issue of running Microsoft apps in Linux. Certainly, they're within their rights to hang up if a Linux/Winword user calls the help desk. But going after a company who legally pays for Winword licenses and runs Winword in Linux/Wine is another matter, bringing up the antitrust bogeyman again. Getting an expert legal opinion on this would be very useful. IMHO, even if Microsoft was legally on solid footing, it would be a huge PR disaster for them. Well yes and no. The 'problem' is most of this code isn't implemented yet... Try Olivers large patch and see if things are any better, or wait a while while a whole load of code gets into cvs. Basically d3d9 shouldn't have any of the code relating to the stencil buffers - that will be in wine3d. I am pretty certain Olivers patch did that, and he is working on splitting it up to get cvs in sync with his local tree. Jason

There was a bug introduced in 0010 where I was fgets()'ing and checking for feof() on file opened with "wb". Thus the debug file was growing out of control. I released 0011 to fix this issue and I'm hoping that people get the upgrade when their PC's restart. It looks like text alignement is not implented or working correctly. Just run calc.exe in Windows then in Wine. Pay attention at where the digits are shown... I can also provide a simple C program to be used as testbed. See bug : 2698 Regards.

It seems that I already have something useful. I've added multilevel undo/redo, GetCharFormat/SetCharFormat (very incomplete) and modify flag, and cleaned up the code a lot. The source code is downloadable from here: http://foltman.com/richtext-20050204.tar.gz I'll try to add handlers for basic editing messages (like WM_SETTEXT) and maybe notifications too, DLLize it and then make a Wine patch out of it. Is that OK ? It's not like everything is done the way it should be (for instance, coordinate system is still pixel-based and not twips-based), but in this stage the risk of having to constantly rewrite everyone else's code is much lower. Some extra testing showed that LastError is not always set by the calls (all?). I added traces to all the calls and suddenly nothing was implemented anymore. Then I added a SetLastError(0) before every call and the output was totally different again. The only thing not implemented anymore on my win98 box was SystemParametersInfoW. So what's the best approach: - add a SetLastError(0) in every test-routine before we do something? - add a trace after each SystemParametersInfo call? - find out which call sets LastError and which calls don't? I'm not actually installing winsock2, just popping up a dialog during the installer mentioning that you need winsock2 if you are running on a win95 machine. What I *should* do is somehow get the nsis installer script to check for the winsock2 dlls and actually run the installer, but thats a bit more difficult than just displaying a dialog with text and a web link. According to bug 2659 http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2659 This patch http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-cvs/2005/01/0232.html causes a regression in Shareaza. http://www.shareaza.com/?id=download I have tested this myself and it is definitely this patch. Backing out this change with current cvs allows Sharaza to work. Hi All, While doing experiments with winegcc/wineg++ I have compiled my application which uses complex multi-threaded library. Wine made shell wrapper script for me and the application itself with the extension .exe.so. I tried to run this application: FIXME:pthread_detach FIXME:pthread_detach Bad system call (core dumped) or, as another option: FIXME:pthread_detach wine: Unhandled exception (thread 000a), starting debugger... Hi Paul, I agree we definately should not be leaving keys/values in user's registries that weren't there originally after the test has been run. Ideally all should be returned to exactly the way it was before the test was run. Unfortunately this patch won't correct the issue. This patch implies that SPI_{GET,SET}ICONTITLEWRAP is not a supported call on Win98 which it is. As a result it will always pass and the registry will still get a new value added. Try the following patch. It was just put together quickly and only covers this one test, but testing here shows it does stop a new value from being added if it did not exist to begin with. I would like to create something that covers the entire sysparams suite of tests to stop this across the board. Thanks for the heads up on this! Justin

Newest winrash problems?

Hi, I had some problems with Winrash bailing out on 2 of my win98 systems. Apparently this was because a new winrash was available and it tried to install that? After uninstalling winrash 0009 and installing 0010 it works again. One of the main differences is that winrash 0010 has an extra winsock2 install, could this be the cause? Cheers, Paul.

advapi32:registry.c tests failing

I noticed that advapi32:registry was failing on my windows xp machine 28 times, but succeeding in my wine regression test runs. I investigated what lines were causing failures and changed some the values so that the errors wouldn't exist on the windows test run. This now causes wine test runs to fail. I looked through test.winehq.org and found the following: Here it works (last time it worked) http://test.winehq.org/data/200411101000/ Here it fails 28 times (first time it looks like it failed) http://test.winehq.org/data/200411201000/ Here it also fails 28 times (most recent) http://test.winehq.org/data/200502011000/ I wanted to know if there was something I'm misunderstanding or missing. Regressions in window focus behavior

The move of update region handling to wineserver (http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-cvs/2004/12/0100.html) back in December caused a regression in Hamster 2.0.0.1. After this patch, Hamster steals focus constantly. When I switch virtual desktops in KDE, it immediately switches back and reactivates the Hamster window. This is even with KDE's "Prevent focus stealing" set to Extreme. Hamster can be downloaded from <http://www.tglsoft.de/misc/hamster_en.htm>. Another patch from Jan 31 (http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-cvs/2005/01/0724.html) provokes the same behavior in Remedy. Switching to another desktop or minimizing the window yanks me back to it immediately. DLL Load Question: Please Help!

Hi, I have windows binary-only, third-party .DLL library without any source files. I would like to use it in my unix-based project, which is compiled with usual GNU C compiler. Wine documentation says Wine is able to load external .DLLs, but does not explain how to implement such ability in userland program using Wine API. I've discovered LoadLibrary() and GetProcAddr() functions compiled into built-in DLL (kernel32.dll.so), so in order to load my DLL I use the function LoadLibrary("somelib.dll"), linking my project with -lwine and -lkernel32. The problem is that when my application calls LoadLibrary(), it causes Bus Error. Back tracing using gdb shows that the crash appears under such sequence: in main() in LoadLibraryA() at module.c:745 in LoadLibraryExA() at module.c:706 in FILE_name_AtoW() at file.c:198 in ?? () from kernel32.dll.so The function call at file.c:198 is RtlInitAnsiString() and (as I understand) is unreferenced in kernel32 and uses ntdll.dll.so. What things should I do before calling LoadLibrary()? By the way: If I call RtlInitAnsiString() directly from main(), linking my project with ntdll.dll.so, it is called correctly, works and returns some result. I tried to define -lntdll within LDFLAGS, in this case compile finishes cleanly, but the Bus Error still appears. Also I tried to find any examples showing how to load external .DLL. I've found no examples. Note: there is no ability to obtain library sources. Bye.

Ok I finished the winetools package when I should have been sleeping, so you're gonna need to be my usability guinea pig. Install the winetools package from the same place the wine packages are (winehq), then use it to setup wine for you and install dcom.
