From what I understand, there are 3 ways to do copy protection in WINE (at least for copy protection that needs a kernel driver to work): 1.Implement a WINE implementation of that kernel driver (in the same way various stock windows kernel drivers have been implemented). Problem with this is that there is a big DMCA risk (which is why AFAIK its been rejected) 2.Implement a fake NTOSKRNL that has just the entrypoints for accessing and loading copy protection drivers (the set of kernel calls needed by the copy protection drivers is only a very small subset of the total set of kernel calls and AFAIK none of them are hardware related) or 3.Implement a proper kernel driver loader (i.e. one that would sit in the windows kernel and do the same sort of thing as that ndiswrapper and that ntfs.sys loader do) What is the current state of copy protection work for WINE? Which of these 3 options do the developers intend to follow? (I remember someone posted some actual code for option 2 but I dont remember if anything happened with it)

looking at the patch, I saw something in the code that made me sick: char *audioAutoDetect(void) { [snip] char *driversFound[10]; [snip] return driversFound[0]; [snip] } can someone fix that broken code ? that would be another nice janitorial task to check whether this kind of error exists somewhere else (I'd bet it does) A+

Winelib MFC app crashes after printing

Hello, I have a small MFC app ported to winelib which uses MFC compiled with winelib. Really, it is just an App-Wizard generated application. I always have a crash of the application after printing. The page is printed ok but after that the app crashes. I use LPD for printing and my command line from wine is 'lpr -P<myprinter>'. I also try to print without MFC support i.e creating the printer DC by hand etc - the crash is the same, it follows EndDoc() call. There is no crash like this at the same linux configuration using in a 'pure' Win32 simple application without MFC though the code for printing is the same. When i print to file, all is ok. So , my current workaround is printing to a temp file and then send the file to lpr. I use RH9.0, wine20050419. My [spooler] section in config is the default from the wine installation. Did anybody meet a problem like that ? Is it MFC that has some impact here ? Thanks a lot for any hints.

Weirdness in the makefile

Can someone explain the significance of these targets in the makefile: manpages: $(MKINSTALLDIRS) $(TOPOBJDIR)/documentation/man3w cd dlls && $(MAKE) man htmlpages: $(MKINSTALLDIRS) $(TOPOBJDIR)/documentation/html cd dlls && $(MAKE) doc-html sgmlpages: $(MKINSTALLDIRS) $(TOPOBJDIR)/documentation/api-guide cd dlls && $(MAKE) doc-sgml Do they do anything? Darn, can't they use a magic keyword or similar mechanisms to mark elements scheduled for clean removal right before the next major version?? (and not out of sudden within almost the same version number) OK, some changes in that area might be non-trivial, so they do it when they feel like doing it, but I really doubt that this is the majority. But OTOH projects have to do binary incompatible changes a bit before the release of the next major version, otherwise there won't be any testing. This started happening on FC3 with the 2.6.11 kernels in programs running under the Sun 1.42 jre. I was using the Nvidia driver supplied with the kernel. I changed to the driver posted on the Nvidia web site and have had no further trouble. I tried to duplicate the problem but it happened so infrequently that I could never quite find it. I am not sure that this problem is with Wine.

Print unicode strings in tests

Hi, I'd like to print unicode-strings in some tests (for debugging purposes). The real problem is the test for invalid chars in the filedialog, which '/' is one of. The solution is obvious: If wine is configured to display unix paths, then accept '/' as a valid char in paths in comdlg32. Actually, we are tackling two slightly different problems here: I would like to have existend applications, for which I don't have the source, to display unix paths instead of dos paths in their file dialogs. So I want MS Office to display unix paths in it's file dialogs. IMHO there is not way to achieve this without the requirement to map one of the dos drives to '/'. At least not if the user should be able to access every file on his filesystem. This solution can also be applied to winelib applications. If you want to use the native posix file functions (which, frankly, I don't see a reason to do, because the user doesn't care how filenames look in the core dump, but only how they look on the screen) then just map the paths coming out of the file dialog to unix with the wine_nt_to_unix_path function. I do understand that there are some shortcomings of this approach for winelib applications, which can not possibly be addressed this way. But it seems equaly obvious to me that your approach can never achieve the goal I laid out above (To make native apps display the unix paths in file dialogs). So perhaps there might be demand for both solutions. Or perhaps I'm totaly off the point and the only person on the planet who likes to see unix paths in his native windows applications on wine. Which would mean your solution might be the only one people are interested in. What I meant to say is, please fell free to implement your solution the way you like it and let the wine community decide on it. But please don't modify shfldr_unixfs in a way that breaks my solution (Conceptually, that is.
