It's been a while since I mentioned anything about the Wine book I'm working on. First, I've lost a co-author. Ira had been working on 5 chapters about Winelib. He actually had a lot written and re-written. However, he's backed out of it. So this is a plea for anyone interested in writing those chapters to contact me. I can fill you in on all the specifics. Even if you don't have a strong Winelib background, I think there's a great opportunity for someone interested in technical writing to put something together. Honestly, I haven't closely reviewed the few chapters that have been rewritten, but I think there's a lot of material to work from. (We're still working out the specifics of that.) The rest of the book is rolling along. I have seven chapters completed totaling over 200 pages. I think I have most of the hard stuff done and the two chapters left shouldn't be too difficult. Right now the review process has been held up by the Winelib sections. Ira's rewrite blew that schedule out of the water and we're seriously overdue on starting reviews. Right now my goal is to shoot for finishing those two chapters by mid September partly to coincide with a beta release of Wine. From there we're still at least 6 months from having a book on the shelves. The licensing on the book will remain OPL. At some point the text will be available to the Wine community. I think that happens about 90 days from the original publication date. I really don't want that to stop anyone from working on the Wine User Guide or Winelib User Guide. Both of those docs are horribly out of date and need some love. Ideally someone would have the User Guide in shape for a beta release. O'Reilly.. after not hearing anything from O'Reilly for a few months I got an email from them the other day. In the "Running Linux 5th ed." book coming out later this year I wrote a section on Wine. Previously they had about one paragraph. It's been expanded to about 8 pages including a section on CrossOver Office 5. Anyway, back to my original question, anyone wanna write a book? -Brian

Recently, a target option was added to winebuild, and winebuild code was changed to use this option instead of preprocessor defines. I was wondering if a similar option will be added to winegcc, based on which it would pass the corresponding option to winebuild. When using winegcc to crossbuild wine dlls between different platforms (for instance x86-linux and sparc-solaris) that have different endianess more problems arise, especially related to resources. The resource compiler has --endianess option that caould be used to crosscompile resources, but winebuild always reads resource files as if they were compiled natively, maining --endianess cannot be used to crossbuild. Correct me if I'm wrong. If I want to be able to crossbuild from x86-linux to sparc-solaris, I need to compile resources with big-endianess and have winebuild use the target option to recognize that resource file was compiled with big-endianess and read it as such, and not natively. This is not the case currently. Like I said, winebuild reads the res file using native byteorder and fails to check res header. Regards, Dimitrije

Porting Device Drivers to Winehq

Hello, Can anyone point me to documentation/help or tools for disassembling Windows 95 drv and vxd files and/or porting them to wine?? I have a Roland SCP-55 Soundcanvas card (pcmcia ) which is not recognized by linux, and Windows XP ( which I don't like using anyway ) will not recognize the drivers when it prompts for a driver file. Ideally I'd like to decode the windows drivers to help with developing a pure linux driver. Barring that, it seems that I should have better luck with wine since it happly emulates and runs win 95 stuff. However, while I've found plenty in the wine docs about running /porting windows _programs_, almost nothing about what to do with the win 95 *.inf *.drv *.vxd and *.ini that come in the driver package for the pcmcia card. Thanks for the help, John Running 2.6.12-gentoo-r6 and Wine-072505 on an IBM T20 Pentium III Thinkpad.

Linuxworld - meeting the guys at the Codeweavers booth

Hi all! I just got back from Linuxworld, and fortunately, I found the Codeweavers booth! I had the pleasure of meeting both Aric Stewart and Rob Shearman (hope I spelled your names right!); I wanted to meet Jeremy too, but I was told that he was off at meetings. In any case, both Rob and Aric were very polite, intelligent and full of humor! From the booth, I walked away with a CrossOver Office demo disc, some Wine accessories (wine, as in the type you drink), and some, ahem... Codeweavers prophylactics to protect against Windows viruses, trojans, etc. LOL! swapped mouse buttons and slow down in wine

(Sorry, if this post here is inappropriate. I'm a newbie trying to get wine working) I've installed wine20050725 from rpm, and it was running ok. I copied and installed japanese dictionary app from my real winxp partition to my fake c drive and patched the reg with the local\software keys from the xp reg. The program worked (kind of - japanese chars dont display except when using japnese lang locale) but from the moment I first launched it the mouse buttons where swapped on my mouse, and wine became painfully slow. This effect is persitant anywhere in wine, even regedit and winecfg now behave this way (slow and inverted mouse). I could prehaps get used to the mouse being backwards but the performance is too painful. New versions of wine don't seem to support a wine.config file, but the config file had more configurability than is cuurently supported in winecfg. So how do you config the latest version of wine? What could have changed in wines configuration to make this happen? Anyone have a links for info on how wine (post the shift to no config file) now works? I've been looking on my web without joy for a solution to this problem. So now I'm turning to this list. Hope someone can help, Liam

Yep, that's what you'll want to do. Disassembly may help. People around here seem to like IDA Pro. Search the wine-devel archives for more suggestions for disassemblers. Hi, When i run codevisual2flowchart using wine-20050726. There is no minimize, maximize buttons. The menus are quite big (duoble the size). It spewing out this messages fixme:imm:ImmGetContext (0x10374) STUB fixme:imm:ImmSetCompositeWindow stub I think these functions need to be implemented as most of the IME applicatations and internal imm functions use the above 2 stubbed functions. I think the problem of menu being double size is due to imm stuff. bye, Vijay

Inconsistency/bug with GetProcAddress

Found an interesting inconsistency with GetProcAddress between wine and native. On windows GetProcAddress of that's say "LoadLibraryA" exported from kernel32 always returns the same address, no matter which process it's called from. On wine it's different. That's say there are two programs app1.exe & app2.exe. app1.exe calls app2.exe (CreateProcess, etc.). Here is what I'm getting: app1.exe: GetProcAddress(mKernel32, "LoadLibraryA") returns 0x404FCBCC app2.exe: GetProcAddress(mKernel32, "LoadLibraryA") returns 0x404FFBCC I have tested this with more then two programs. All consecutive apps return same number as app2.exe. When any of this programs are ran under winedbg they all return same address as app2.exe. Running separate program doesn't change this behavior for parent-child processes. Both programs started in parallel will return the same address as app1.exe. What's more interesting, is that GetModuleHandleA("Kernel32") always returns the same handle. Is there are any reason why this is happening? Any ways to fix this? Unfortunately there are some programs that depend on address returned from GetProcAddress being the same in parent and child processes. -- Best regards, Vitaliy

Help debugging GLXUnsupportedPrivateRequest failure

I downloaded a trial version of a Japanese RPG (Vagrants from Studio e.go, at http://210.138.120.57/download/extra/vagrants_trial.exe) and tried to run it under Wine. This is a self-extracting archive, and it decompresses correctly, but when the main executable (vagrants.exe) is run, I get the following error: trace:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_ActiveRender making new buffer X Error of failed request: GLXUnsupportedPrivateRequest Major opcode of failed request: 143 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 16 (X_GLXVendorPrivate) Serial number of failed request: 9274 Current serial number in output stream: 9276 I could pinpoint the exact location of the call that fails. The line is dlls/wined3d/device.c, line 5592, at the call to glXMakeCurrent() in IWineD3DDeviceImpl_ActiveRender. But I am at a loss a how to fix this on my own. The function aborts the program instead of returning an error, as the code intends to check, so it cannot even recover from it. From what I googled, this seems to be some missing functionality of my X server (in Fedora 4), but there is no more information on how to fix this. Could somebody explain this error in more detail, and what can I do to aid in diagnosing or fixing it? Using latest Wine CVS (at 2005/07/29). Alex Villacis Lasso
