In general, I like the idea of use FUSE from within other projects. e.g. somebody's doing it with KDE; see http://kde.ground.cz/tiki-index.php?page=KIO+Fuse+Gateway But FUSE is not yet part of the standard kernel.org kernels; see http://kerneltrap.org/node/5329 for recent comments on this. It's kind of a shame that there isn't a way to use FUSE without a kernel portion. One ought to be able to run it as a daemon or something, at least. And that would let you use it with Solaris or BSD, not just Linux. Anyway, since FUSE is not widely used or very portable, Wine should be very careful about relying on it. Hi wine-devel, attached i have a test case whitch demonstates the differece between Windows and wine. There is also a sample program 'TEST.CPP' attached. On Windows XP - Start 'test.exe' from a dos-box... you see some FAST counting integers - Start a other (loop.pl) program witch consumes mutch cpu time. - the output of 'test.exe' is slower but FAST On wine - Start 'test.exe' from a dos-box... you see some FAST counting integers - Start a other (loop.pl) program witch consumes mutch cpu time. - the output of 'test.exe' is very slow This different behavior starts from wine version 20041201. You could log printing related debug channels and try to figure out how Wine gathers the printer configuration information (perhaps via CUPS somehow). Then you could try to figure out a way to let Wine selectively know which particular printer to use. That could be done in a shell script that launches Wine and before launching Wine either sets an environment variable or modifies the registry file in some way or another (dirty) or something else. But then I better leave real ideas to real Wine printing experts... Andreas Mohr

theming idea

Hello, I just read some of the articles in winehq.org I thought of something to do with theming: instead of having theming use existing control functions, couldn't the code be made independent, meaning the "non-themed" code basically becomes just another theme among the others, calling the same (custom) control building functions which are designed for using a theme? just an idea, I don't know much about the code ;) HTH, Joris

Wine passes WGA test

You can now validate for WGA downloads using wine and the Microsoft WGA validation tool, and you'll get a thank you message from Microsoft for using Microsoft genuine downloads. Also the anti wine checks appear to be disabled as the tool works in both windows 2000 and windows 98 mode, however the wine registry key string is still in the binary, maybe it's just disabled. In any case some EU officials have already expressed an interest in these checks, so if they enable them someone may end up getting another super fine. Ivan.

Hi James, I don't think this is quite right. The pl2303 is a standard USB-serial converter, and it should have a selectable baud rate (according to the Linux kernel's driver for it). It has a db-9 connector on one end, and a usb connector on the other, right? I'm also pretty sure that all serial ports are ttys in Linux, so your if(isatty()) check will always succeed. Have you tried writing a small test program that does GetCommState and SetCommState on that serial device in Windows? If it fails to set the baud rate perhaps there's an error code returned? Mike

Hi Rob (and Lionel), While debugging a game where there is the same problem, I did exactly the same fix. However, although this works, it is horribly slow. Do you have the same issue? Maybe this is the reason this was commented out. I wonder if SYNC_UPDATE and OWN_WINDOW stuff has been written to workaround this. There is not comment about that and the code is from transgaming and rather old so I don't know. Lionel do you remember something about that? threats from MS over Wine's CD/DVD recognition??

My friend has a Linux PC and when he inserts a CD or DVD, it popups up the cover art automatically and displays all sorts of extended data, like the actors in the film, the studio that released the cd, etc. And we tried 100 or so discs and it recognized every one perfectly, just as good as Windows XP Media Center does, and it even seems to cache the entries since the 2nd time you insert the disc the recognition is instant (first time takes a few seconds). None of the other Linux media players I've used do this--they all use freedb which doesn't work for DVD's, doesn't have extended attributes, and doesn't display any cover art. I've been poking around all day to figure out how it's done. Someone said it seems this Linux project is pulling the data from Microsoft's Windows media server, like XP MC. If that's true, I'm sure Bill isn't too happy. But anyway I figured that code must have been lifted from Wine--part of your "emulation". But I've been digging into Wine and it seems Wine doesn't do this either, at least not anymore. In fact it's conspicuously missing since Wine is a Windows emulator, and under Windows you put a movie in the drive and see the cover art and all the info on the disc, and with Wine you don't. Was this in Wine at some point, and then got yanked because of threats from Microsoft? I actually see no reference to it anywhere. If it's another one of those modules like libdvdcss that every needs to have, but nobody wants to host, it's buried so far underground I can't find it. ownerdraw paint recursion in listbox

Hello, recently i tried to install some application and it hung when i tried to select options. It uses listbox with ownerdraw items with checkboxes. When listbox is initially painted everything is ok. But when i try to select other item, an extra WM_PAINT is sent to listbox when application draws item. This causes infinite recursion. I've been implemented a simple workaround adding boolean to listbox structure but i have doubts. I briefly looked at some other controls and had not noticed similar countermeasures. Have somebody ever seen such behaviour? It would be interesting to test other controls sending WM_PAINT from ownerdraw handler but i'm short of time to do it soon. Should this workaround implemented in this way or something is wrong deeper with WM_PAINT handling? Thanks.

x11drv glx deadlocks.

Hi, Somewhere between 20-07-2005 and 26-07-2005 I've been getting deadlocks when I call some glx functions e.g. glXMakeCurrent, I've tracked to problem down to a deadlock, prior to calling glXMakeCurrent wined3d calls wine_tsx11_lock_ptr, but the call to glXMakeCurrent is raising an event in x11drv on a different thread that then tries to call wine_tsx11_lock_ptr, resulting in a deadlock. I've looked through the patches send in between 20-07-2005 and 26-07-2005 but nothing looked obvious. I've been experiencing those errors with the same failed assertion in another game and came up with a similar patch but didn't submit since I think this just hides another bug as it should *not* happen that buf_mixpos becomes greater than buflen (and this >= above should probably be ==) at any time.
