[DOCS, POLICY] Documenting stuff that doesn't work right?

Hey, So I just blew away my previous install of Wine and reinstalled from yesterday's CVS, and went to install a program, so I could take notes on the most current user experience for the docs. I immediately realized that I hadn't run winecfg to set my drives, so I went to do that-- and that's where I ran into this problem. I was installing Icewind Dale, and like all games and Wine-installed programs, I meant to install to the partition I have set aside for that purpose, which is mounted to /usr/local/games, with a symlink in my home directory. So naturally I usually set this partition to be a Wine drive, and I prefer to use d: as the browse dialog naturally defaults to the c: drive and it's faster to change if I only have to change to the next drive. When I went to the 'Drives' tab in winecfg, I had c: (of course) e: (tmp) f: (my home directory) z: (/) You will notice that no removeable media device appears. So I go to add a drive, which is automatically called D: , as you would expect, and I set it to point to /usr/local/games, and I also add G: and set it to point to /media/cdrecorder. Hit apply and all appears well (no errors or anything of that sort). Run the IWD install again and get to the installation location section, and G appears in the browser, but D does not. Cancel and back to winecfg to try again. After several attempts, I finally opened up a file manager and went to ~/.wine/dosdevices and looked at what was there. To my surprise, there was already a link to d:, which was set to /cdrom (which is an invalid location for me anyway since I use hal, which puts stuff in /media). Since I had already set the correct mount point of my DVD drive to the g: link, I just changed d: to my preferred location of /usr/local/games, and was able to complete the install to the d:\iwd directory as I had planned. So the problem is that an automatically created (but wrongly targeted, in these days of hal/dbus) link is created to the cdrom device does not appear in the Winecfg drive list (unless you do autodetect, which may well add additional, unwanted drives to the list that the user would have to remove), making a drive letter that 'seems' to be available in fact unavailable for use (the reason that I couldn't set /usr/local/games to d was because d already existed and couldn't apparently be changed in its invisibility), and also causing the user to think that no drive letter is set for the CD/DVD device, so that they create an unnecessary second link. Obviously I know how to get around this, having just done so, but is this appropriate to document? Or is it likely to be fixed before the updated docs go 'live'? I only ask because I can't think of a way to write this up atm without explicitly exposing a flaw in Wine, and Wine doesn't really deserve that-- even winecfg doesn't deserve that, being much improved from even last month's release (which improvement is obvious, even though I've only done this single operation). I mean, I'll take notes on everything, but this looks like a policy question to me. Holly

Interaction between shell32.ShellExecute, IContextMenu and the ShellLink object?

Hi All, Currently the way that ShellExecute is implemented looks wrong. Resolving shortcuts is done by calling SHELL_ResolveShortCutW (line 273 of dlls/shell32/shlexec.c) instead of invoking ShellLink object and letting it resolve itself. The question is, through which interface (or set of interfaces) does shell32 invoke the Shelllink object? From what I can determine, ShellExecute should use the .lnk extension to look in the registry (HKCR\.lnk -> HKCR\lnkfile\CLSID) and get CLSID_ShellLink. Using the CLSID, it calls CoCreateInstance, then IShellExtInit->Initialize() which loads the .lnk file. Unfortunately, the next step is unclear to me. I think that IContextMenu->InvokeCommand is used, but I'm not sure as to how. If anybody (Michael Jung?) knows how this works, please let me know, as I'd like to make IShellLink work properly, complete MSI advertised shortcuts and clean up ShellExecute... thanks! Mike

It depends on previous patch to pass OBJECT_ATTRIBUTES.Attributes to the server. I removed case_sensitive flag from name space, since it's no use anymore. IŽm having intallation problems with WINE ( when interlocked.c is compiled the following message appears: "error you must implement the interlocked* functions for your CPU"). Newbie Wine question... Borland C++ Builder and Firebird via FIBplus

I have a Borland C++ Application (with full source code) that I am trying to get to run under Wine 20050830. (I plan on switching to CVS builds once I see some progress) I keep getting "segmentation fault" when running the app. I found info on WINEDEBUG and am currently running it set to +relay This results in 300+ Megabyte debug file. (Ran system out of memory trying to loot at it with Konq) I have then been using "tail" to grab just the last few thousand lines of it... It always ends with hundreds/thousands of calls to ntdll.RtlEnterCriticalSection and ntdll.RtsLeaveCriticalSection followed by err:seh:setup_exception stack overflow ### bytes in thread #### eip ###### esp ###### stack 0x##### - 0x#### I am planning on using the HKLM\Software\Wine\Wine existence to let the app know it is running on wine... The app itself also has a "debug mode" that logs events to a file while running - is there a way to send these messages to the same log as WINEDEBUG? That way I would be able to see what method or function of the app resulted in the thousands of calls into the WIN32 API... I am trying to figure out how to: A> Turn the above errors into useful bug reports B> Be able to resolve limitations or errors in wine as I came across them... I do NOT speak for the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers. I am a contractor supporting one of their projects... I personally think an exception-based solution would be better. This is what exceptions where invented. I know they look alien in C, but I use them every day in Java for good effect. It's true, we have to be careful to release resources along the way, but we have only 6 such allocations that need protecting, and they are localized. And there we already have a try/catch simulated with goto's. Another approach may be to ref count the structure pointed to by infoPtr, and release it at exit from WinProc when the count is 0. It could also be that it's as simple as saying -no-undefined to libtool, that option is needed on windows. trying to get recent (winecfg) wine versions to run a program and it shows an error saying riched20.dll version <unspecified> is found and it "requires" 5.2...... I would have thought that the build-in is probably fine , it is just a version check that is failing. Is there a way to con it or is the only way to pull in a versioned native dll? TIA

Finding apps that are keeping organizations from switching to Linux

I've been thinking about how to boost Wine adoption among organizations that are considering migrating their desktops from Windows to Linux. It seems like the place Wine could have the most impact is at sites which have just one crucial Windows app which is keeping them from migrating So I'm thinking about compiling a list of these keystone apps, starting a little informal QA of Wine using them, and filing reproducible bugs in the winehq bugzilla. Does anyone have suggestions for apps to consider for that list? I'm looking for semispecialized apps that haven't gotten much attention from Wine to date, and that have free demo versions or have vendors willing to provide copies of their Windows apps for QA under Wine. I'll probably focus on one to three such apps, since my time's pretty limited. For example, I ran into such an app while volunteering at a 500-member church. Just about the time I was starting to think about moving them to Linux, they bought a package called "Church Windows", and quickly became completely dependent upon it. There are probably three or so apps in the "church management" category that, if supported by Wine, would enable thousands of churches to consider migrating to Linux. Perhaps some of you who have worked at churches/schools/nonprofits/companies can chime in here... Windows CE on Wine

OK What you guys think. I have an Arm based machine Running Windows CE. Same machine also runs Linux... Do you think it can be the same Wine codebase, implementing Both Win32 API as well as WindowsCE API? What areas must be rewritten (or not) ? 1.Loader 2.HAL (is there an HAL in Wine) 3.Debugging / exceptions any thing else? Other CPU(s)? What if I want to do the same but for WindowsCE x86?
