Global hooks problems (WH_MOUSE_LL)

Trying to track down the problem with our DInput implementation I found some interesting stuff - our global hooks don't work correctly because hook callbacks are never called if event is generated in the different thread. I don't think this is a revelation to number of people who knew that before. But how do we fix it? Her is what I dug up so far: 1. Installing global hook we setting it as WINEVENT_INCONTEXT while msdn and tests indicate that it qualifies as WINEVENT_OUTOFCONTEXT instead. Unless of course we don't want to call post_win_event in step 5 and go to step 6 instead. 2. All HW mouse messages start here: http://source.winehq.org/source/dlls/x11drv/mouse.c#L191 From looking at it I assume that all the HW mouse hooks should be handled by HOOK_CallHooks function. This is because there are no code related to hooks in send_message server call. 3. First thing that HOOK_CallHooks does is calling HOOK_IsHooked with checks only current thread for installed hooks. So this is first place that is wrong. Let's comment that check out for now. I think we need to move that check farther down, after the call to server. 4. We call start_hook_chain http://source.winehq.org/source/server/hook.c#L468 to start hook callback chain. There we call get_first_valid_hook on local and then global if no local hooks exist. But there again we check for http://source.winehq.org/source/server/hook.c#L211 the hook callback thread being local (which is again not the case for global hooks). This is problem #2. 5. Now we have post_win_event of but right before it we hitting an assert so this is not the right way? 6. Say we returned with success and back to HOOK_CallHooks that now tries to call MSG_SendInternalMessageTimeout. Which for some reason fails to deliver message to our global hook. So my question is to anyone who knows. What is the proper way to deliver these messages to global hooks that are in a different thread/process? Attached is the small program to test part of this. Fixing problems (1) & (2) made it work. But it still not enough for the game (for some reason). Vitaliy

Last year, I tried installing Tivo Desktop 2.0, and it failed miserably: http://www.winehq.com/hypermail/wine-devel/2005/03/0406.html Prompted by a request in wine-users, I just tried installing both Tivo Desktop 1.3 (their win98-compatible version) and Tivo Desktop 2.2 (for winxp). 2.2 wouldn't install (it really wanted to install a service, and that didn't work) but 1.3 did install (with a bunch of warnings). Starting TivoPublisher.exe even puts up a GUI after warnings like this: fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x7fb1f198,0x00000000), stub! fixme:win:LockWindowUpdate (0x10020), partial stub! fixme:win:LockWindowUpdate ((nil)), partial stub! fixme:secur32:GetUserNameExA 3 0x7fb1f51c 0x7fb1f580 fixme:sync:CreateIoCompletionPort (0xf0, (nil), 7ec2b0dc, 00000000): stub. Unfortunately, the GUI is nonfunctional. (And kind of funny.) Starting TivoServer.exe doesn't work at all (it seems to want a service to be started). Hello, During research the crashing application I've found a problem that can be easily reproduced by test. (http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2005-November/022384.html) By investigation of problem I've found that original DIB bit depth is 4bpp, Physical pixmap bit depth is (equal to screen) 24bpp. In x11drv/bitmap.c X11_GetBitmapBits takes in account just only bit depth of physical pixmap, and copies it to provided buffer as-is. I.e. it tries to fill buffer with size (e.g.) 48x48x4bpp with 48x48x24bpp that causes buffer overrun and late falling in SetBitmapBits function. I don't think that'll fly. I'm of the opinion that all this fancy CSIDL_PERSONAL mapping doesn't belong in shell32, even though I put it there. shell32 should default to creating paths that are part of the profiles directory if nothing else exists, since the shell won't work without them. But creating Linux-environment-friendly defaults should perhaps go in wineprefixcreate. I actually rather liked the idea of putting it in winecfg, and launching winecfg in a GUI-less mode from wineprefixcreate. The advantage is that the drive mappings and shell folder creation would be in the same app, and so would have some hope of staying consistent. If a user breaks it through direct registry manipulation, his fault. Problems with graphics

Hi: i have an access application and i haved tried to emulate it with wine and crossoffice as well. I have a problem when i want to display reports which have graphics. They are well displayed but when i close it, application fonts (menu) make bigger and take a white background. Has anybody seen any problem similar to it. Thanks all!

Meanwhile I have done some further tests: Using the alsa-output driver works, but then I would have to kill the jack daemon, since jackd blocks the sound device, although I am running alsa with dmix. Then a ran Wine with the OSS-output driver while using a tool called oss2jack (makes a kernel device and re-routes all OSS connections to the jack daemon). Surprisingly that does NOT work, too. Although other OSS apps (skype, et, vlc, cedega (oss) ...) run really *very good* over oss2jack. There is one difference then: Using OSS-output driver, Wine does not segfault! It successfully returns info for "down" devices on my RH8 based linux box, with my creaky old wine-20050419. get_ifaddrs makes the same calls that you were, in its implementation. So it has the same problem. But it's alot easier to program with than the ioctl you used. You made comments in the source about if_indextoname having issues. Here is quick&dirty (TM :) patch (against wine-0.9.6) that changes explorer-like Open/Save file dialogs to be more 3.11-like dialog/Windows compatible: 1) set view window control id to 1121 2) set inner list window control id to 1 instead of 2000 (anyone know why 2000 was chosen?) This patch is really not very good because of my 1) implementation, but it fixes Macromedia Director cast import! I've done 1) by placing SetWindowLong(hwndView,GWLP_ID, lst2) after each IShellBrowser_BrowseObject call. Better approach is to set view vindow's control id inside of IShellBrowser_BrowseObject but I don't sure if it safe. Problems with references to drive Z: in registry's User Shell Folders

Hi, when shell32.dll is registered during wineprefixcreate, it puts a lot of paths based on Z:\ in HKLM/HKCU Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\User Shell Folders. This is due to resolving CIDL_PERSONAL to the DOS path corresponding to $HOME. If people remove the Z: drive afterwards, this leads to a lot problems (One being that the Desktop shellfolder won't initialize any more, which breaks the complete shell namespace and thus the file dialogs). I'm proposing to add two more environment variables: %PERSONAL%, which would be expanded to the DOS path corresponding to $HOME if this exists, or to %USERPROFILE%\\My Documents if not (with "My Documents" resource based, of course). And %DESKTOP%, which would be expanded to DOS_PATH_OF($HOME)\\Desktop if existent and to %USERPROFILE%\\Desktop, if not. Does someone see a problem with this approach? Dear developers and all others reading this list, from Sven Paschukat I was informed about the discussion of removing the WineTools link from the winehq website. I read all remarks made to that hotly discussed topic and I am willing to tell you all a bit about the purpose and history of WineTools as well as I will answer the questions made by Tom Wickline. So this will be a little longish mail and I beg your pardon for that and hope you have enough patience to read it all. To start from the beginning, I took over the remainings of a project winetools initially started by Frank Hendriksen <frank(a)frankscorner.org> which was somehow orphaned. The very reason I did that was that in autumn 2004 I had to write an article in the well known German computer magazine c't. After fiddling with wine for a long time only to install a stable IE6 or Office, I found that it was so absolute complicated to describe all the steps needed only to install the IE6 (which is much better now) and that also following these steps was very erroneous, that I started to rewrite the winetools script for the readers of this article. I never meant it to become so famous and wide spread, but the download statistics after only two month showed me that there was a massive demand for such a tool. So this is how it started and it shows very clearly that it was always an installer to make certain important applications easily usable under Linux. It was never meant for testing or developing. It was always meant for the end user being able to use his software. At the time of the first releases it was almost impossible to install or work with many applications without using native DCOM and/or many of the builtin DLLs that come with the IE6. To find a configuration for as many apps as possible was one of the goals. Not to force users (with very low skills) to have many different wine installations *and* many wine user directories was a second goal. So this is the reason why, until now, everything in WineTools is based on this native M$ software (DCOM, IE6). And believe me, no one would be more happy to wipe this DCOM, IE6 and MSI stuff completely from his harddisk than me! So as so many programs rely on parts of M$ software (MFC, VB and MDAC are other important examples) and because to install and use this software leads to so many restrictions in the wine usage, I had to pin wine to the emulation of Win98 and also had to massively tamper around with DLLOverrides. The goal was to built up an environment, that can install and use as many Windows programs as possible. This did in no way regard to the fact that it is not very helpful for the wine developers. It was just a practical decision. >From time to time, Sven Paschukat and me are testing wine versions to figure out, whether we can skip some of the M$ stuff. We have not been very successful with that until now, so this is why there are so many remainings of the first start of the project in the concept. But again: This tool is for the average windows user. And believe me, I tested this with my brothers, who are just normal users. And they never ever got a piece of windows software running with wine without my heavy intervention. With WineTools they just need to click on some buttons and got their software downloaded, installed and configured. With an amount of many thousand downloads a month, not calculating the distribution inclusions of WineTools, I get almost the same number of direct mails about problems with the software as are coming into the list. And I get massive positive resonance from users who were for a long time trying to get their stuff running with plain wine and are now happy that it just works with WineTools. I must admit, that there raise problems out of the fact, that the same users are trying to install not WineTools-tested software with the setup of WineTools and coming then to the list. And your are right that this is an undebuggable situation. The one on Sourceforge is Frank Hendriksen's. He was already contacted by Sven Paschukat to remove the project, but Sourceforge does not allow to remove projects. So instead he already pointed a link to the official WineTools site. I don't see what we can do more here. The one on Freshmeat was taken over and is maintained by Sven Paschukat. Also Freshmeat does not allow the removal of projects. But Sven will update the versions there and we will try to keep it uptodate. If Vitaly is a man of independent means it is nice for him but we are a free time project and can only work for WineTools, as the name suggests, in our *free* time. Should the AppDB make public the number of unique page views each app gets?

This was an idea we discussed in IRC for a short bit, and I think it would be good to bring it up here. Essentially, if the AppDB displayed the number of page views each app got it would go a long way towards estimating the demand for particular applications, whether they work or not. It seems fair to say that someone looking an app up in the AppDB either wants to run it in Wine or wants to know if it's doable should he switch to Wine. Coincidentally, this also helps solve the voting problem - since votes for gold apps are supposed to be replaced with votes for apps that work should be done on, we now have a mechanism to sort the Gold list other than by votes. Sorting the gold list by page views would also greatly help navigation from the front page of the AppDB, as it would place the most popular applications at the top. Then again, maybe there's something I've overlooked. Thoughts? -Scott Ritchie

Hm. Felt I needed to offer a counterpoint to Vitaliy's rather enthusiastic response. I support winetools, though I don't use it myself. Not only as a matter of principle (this is open source we're talking about, and one of the beauties is we don't get to constrain how it's used.) Also because it's in line with the aims of the Wine project: run Windows apps. Wine is nice in that it doesn't require you to have any MS license to run Windows apps, but it can use MS software if you have a licensed copy. So winetools offers folks with MS licenses a relatively easy way to get apps to run. Still, while that's nice for the users, it's not so nice for us Wine developers, because it's hard to get widespread testing of things we're improving if they're not being widely used. So, as Vitaliy suggested, it would be nice for us if you guys, who know what problems you encounter running with builtin DLLs, could file bug reports in bugzilla for us. That way at least we have a chance to say, hey, that problem's now fixed, consider using builtin OLE (or whatever) in the next release of winetools. Now for specifics. For instance, you use native advpack in all cases, but that's seen some more work recently. What bugs do you encounter if you use builtin instead? Same with ole32. Ideally, each of the apps that has a native override should have a bug report associated with it, what goes wrong if you use the builtin version instead. Also, the default override, "*"="native,builtin" seems wrong. If we don't have a DLL at all, we use a native version of course. I don't think it should be the policy to assume the Wine version isn't up to snuff by default. This could even cause problems, e.g. I don't believe any native version of netapi32.dll will work on Wine, yet you don't specify to use the builtin version. Also, you direct users to http://winehq.org/site/forums. That's fine since this is community support anyway, and it is often the case that winetools knowledgeable people are around (like you guys.) But it would be nicer if you could be clearer about it. Like, that we developers had nothing to do with it, and may be unfriendly to it if we're in a bad mood, or it's a Tuesday :) It'd also be nice (for us, even though no one actually reads anything these days) if you could be clearer about what it does. That it installs MS components, that it uses these instead of the builtin versions sometimes, that you can change how it does this using winecfg, etc. That'd make it easier for us to help folks that have only used winetools that want support, because often the first question we ask is, what version of wine, and what DLLs are you using? --Juan __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Problem with WineD3D Surface Locking

Hello, I've spotted a bug in WineD3D's surface locking, and I have no clue how to fix this. The problem is that unlocking the back buffer causes it to become completely black, no matter what's written to it's memory or what has been there before. I have written a small D3D9 test app which shows this behavior: Compile it with "winemaker .", followed by make, and run it. Pressing ESC will cause it to quit, pressing any other keys makes IDirect3DDevice9::Clear call on the back buffer, with a color value based on the pressed keys. A click anywhere will LockRect() the whole backbuffer, write 0xff into the whole locked memory, and UnlockRect() it. The screen should become completely white, but instead it goes black. With the fglrx driver and 24 bit color depth it shows the correct behavior, but with any other driver(radeon, software rendering) or 16 bit color depth, it doesn't work. The bug is somehow related to some GL calls in UnlockRect(glPixelZoom and glOrtho), but I couldn't find anything specific. I hope you can help me, I am quite stuck here, Stefan

Winelib debugging with eclipse in fc4

A while back I posted a question about how to get debugging working with eclipse in fedora 4. I am having some success, so if anyone else out there is interested here's how it is set up. In regedit: * disabled auto winedbg by renaming AeDebug I changed HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/AeDebug to AeDebug-DISABLED. Without this gdb doesn't seem to be able to get a hold of SEGFAULTs. In eclipse's Run/Debug dialog box: * set the c/c++ application to WINE_SRC/loader/wine-pthread WINE_SRC points to a compiled version of wine. For me, I got the wine src rpm and ran rpmbuild -bb. This is where main() is, which eclipse looks for at start up. * put your .exe.so file on the Arguments tab * choose the GDB Debugger on the Debugger tab * add WINE_SRC on the Source tab as a "Filesystem directory with subdirectories" The only weirdness so far is that sometimes (not always) the debugger suspends when a new thread is created. I just resume (F8) past that. And I am not sure what impact bypassing wine-preload's exec-shield workaround will have on me. More on that if I learn more. But I gotta say that having a functioning IDE with integrated debugging on Linux is a major relief and, for me at least, a long time coming! ... mo PS: I installed FC4, and then did yum update. eclipse is version 3.1.1 updated from the eclipse UI from the version that came with FC4.

The purpose is for students in UCLA's CS 130 Software Engineering course to first extend this conformance test to test conformance to unimplemented features, and then later implement their chosen features. Ok, I think I solved my own problem. In x11drv/window.c we see that "full-screen popup windows are managed". If I don't rotate the screen we are no longer a "full-screen" pop-up. My bad. Windows manager

I have an application that does not seem to appear to the Window Manager. I am using fvwm. To confirm I am running fbpanel which basically does a: XGetWindowProperty(GDK_DISPLAY(), GDK_ROOT_WINDOW, a_NET_CLIENT_LIST, 0, 0x7fffffff, 0, XA_WINDOW, ...); and the window never appears on its list. The strange thing is if I rotate the screen in my XF86Config-4 file, the window DOES appear on the list and I can use fbpanel to select the window, bring it to the front, etc. Anybody have an idea as to what difference rotating the screen would make? Is copying.dj compatible with our license? Also not explicie telling LPGL, copying.dj says: * objects and libraries linked into an application may be distributed without sources. There is nothing wrong with operation timing out. We actually waiting on either process exit (service) or signaled event ^. We don't get either and timing out (in service_start_process).
