What happened to the Fedora packages?

What happened to the Fedora packages? They have not been updated since 0.9.2!!!! Right now it is at 0.9.10!!! Nearly every other Linux distro supported has the up to date packages!!! And why does the Red Hat packages site not go to the SourceForge site as it does for SUSE packages and the others?? I have not really had the guts to ask until now, because I thought that maybe there was a slump, but now, its getting annoying!! And Fedora just released Fedora Core 5 yesterday!!! Please tell me new packages will be ready soon!!! Compiling WINE always crashes my computer, so I prefer to use the RPMs...

Hope this is of interest to someone -Rob. ******Applications: Current status*********** ***In Painter 5 *Cursor pressure works. (Therefore is usable by most) *Cursor orientation is a little odd: The orientation maths needs to be re-done. *No eraser. Haven't yet cracked what enables the eraser. *Doesn't work in desktop mode: Need to map to desktop coordinates. *Repeats windows bugs where cursor looses pressure/orientation info almost bug for bug (Is this a feature? ;-) *Cannot detect pressure/orientation int the "Brush Tracking" window: The tablet context is attached to the main window, so no events get to the popup, even if they overlap. This is not how windows wintab functions. ***In Photoshop 6. *Can only get tablet data in desktop mode: This is because the tablet context is attached to the desktop. Which generates/receives no wine events outside desktop mode. * Eraser and pen pressure working. *But* to get them working, you must have 3 XInput devices listed in your XF86Config file, They need to be the last entries in the "ServerLayout" section and the following order: eraser, tablet mouse. This is a far from ideal way of specifying the devices Wintab should use :-/ I'll document this if someone can point me to a good place to put the docs. *******To Do************* 1. Look at X11 errors. There appear to be some errors that deny some users the ability to access Wintab enabled apps. (I think I know how to fix this) 2. Improve orientation data. When tablet context is on top, let it read XInput events from all the app's top-level windows. (This simulates the fact that the context is usually designed to cover the whole screen) 4. When tablet context is attached to desktop, read XInput events from all the app's top-level windows. 5. Tests ~ --My current philosophy on tests is... ~ Use Photoshop & Painter, any formal tests ~ can be written if anyone else gets involved in patching Wintab, to avoid regressions, and conflict. **********Long term to do (Anyone interested?):********* There's a lot of work that could be done here, but what gets done and who does it probably depends upon whether anyone finds an app that needs these features. I'd love to implement these, but realistically, I don't foresee doing this unless someone hires me to do so ;) 1. Improve configuration of wintab. Wintab could probably do with some information entered into the config file, to avoid the user having to hack their Xfree86cfg file. 2. Handle Z-Order of context properly. This entails *sharing Z-Order between apps. *Working out exactly what role windows have in determining tablet context z-orders. *Allow tablet contexts that don't cover the whole screen/tablet. *Handle inter-application clipping of tablet contexts *Allow all application's windows to receive tablet events when tablet context is on top 3. Implement non-system tablet contexts (Where system cursor not moved by pen or mouse) 4. Unicodify 5. Implement various wintab extensions. 6. Implement wintab manager functions. 7. Tests. *********Unknowns********* 1. How are wintab contexts are raised lowered? Contexts have their own z-order independent of windows, and their own viewport concept, based upon the tablet's coordinate system, not that of the OS. It appears that entering, or clicking on the window the tablet context is attached to will raise/lower the context. But I haven't done much testing on this. In particular, what happens if more than one app request their tablet context is attached to the desktop? 2. How Painter detects the eraser. Have 3 possibilities i. Windows can detect an eraser, and sends specific messages. (I'm sure I've seen this, but can't work out where!) ii. Only works if tablet and cursors are named correctly. (Probably linked to wacom tablets only). iii. I've missed something 3. I believe winelib runs on the following non-x86 operating systems: Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X, and FreeBSD. There's no reason in principle it couldn't run on AIX or HP/UX. comctl32.dll: Running siap and modules under wine, first steps

Hi, I'm trying to use a program called "siap"[1] under wine. It's the required program to pay taxes that the Argentinian government uses. So, it's quite important for the free software community in Argentina to be able to use it in a free software environment. However, I haven't heard of any real success on it, so far. I've been trying to make it run using winetools[2], and differents versions of wine. The furthest I've gone, has been with version 20050310 and all the "plugins" that winetools provides, installed. Only then, could I install the application, run it, switch between the different modules (although it worked only sometimes), but I can't really use it. There are a couple of important widgets that seem to be incompatible with wine. But as I'm not an expert neither in Windows nor in wine, the one I could really track down is a TreeView widget (from comctl32.dll) (from the main window of the program), that is not fully implemented in wine, and by using a native comctl32.dll (I tried using the win98, winme, win2k libraries) the widget would work but some of the other stuff, like switching to one of the modules wouldn't. I made a screenshot to make this clearer, the wine version[3] and the w2k version[4]. So, what should I do next? Is there some documentation of how to implement a certain Windows widget in wine? Is anybody working in this dll, or has worked on this widget? I'd appreciate any comments. Wine and Java -- some success!

Ahh, with 0.9.12, we are one step away from using Java!! So far, I have tried to use a Java-based game that provides it's own JRE in Wine. It start up fast, and i do mean *fast*, and displays the game's splash-banner, and draws a quick black all over the screen (which other X clients remove by repainting their windows). It then decides to crash, but alas, it did do *something*. javaw.exe -version gives this: java version "1.4.0_01" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.0_01-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.0_01-b03, mixed mode) the crash gives just this, and nothing more: swapper.jar: stack smashing attack in function WAVEMAP_widMessage() Aborted -- The real problem with C++ for kernel modules is: the language just sucks. -- Linus Torvalds

Google Sketch-Up Not Starting

Now this tool is giving a Dialog box about incorrect display drivers and saying that ChoosePixelFormat Failed. Now what should i try more (debug channels) no err msgs are shown in the cmd prompt. This works fine and all, but it makes it so that Mac OS X and Windows apps don't show up side by side with the linux apps. In the end, I'm sure it would be most desirable to avoid X11 on the Mac completely because it's an optional install (albeit easily installable after the fact) and it just doesn't have an OS X feel to it, which is what people would desire who are running OS X. Is it really necessary to have hard dependencies on both freetype and fontforge, configure returns a fail if either of these is missing ? I can live with a dependency on freetype since Sun supplies this lib but I'd rather not depend on fontforge, which might not be installed on a target system Bob

A while back there was a bug reported because certain installers looked in the registry for the path to the programs menu, and when they couldnt find it, they would abort the install. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2765 The bug was closed once a patch was committed.. Seems that now, wineprefixcreate has the same issue, and since we are using that to setup the wine environment instead of wine itself, it is causing the same problem. This should be trivial, but it is annoying having to manually add something that should be in the registry by default anyways.. I reopened the bug for now since it is an issue again and people were posting to it. Tom

RFC: sfd2ttf

Hi, Here's a first version of an sfd2ttf tool based on fontforge-20051205. You can dwonload it from [1]. It consists of 5 files (with Makefile) and has a size of 500K. There's still some dead code lying around, I think I can bring it down to 300K-400K. Is this acceptable? SFD reading was quite easy, the code was well seperated. TTF generation was a bit harder. I decided to output TrueType, with bitmap tables from OpenType. The others ttf variations (full OpenType or even aat (Apple Advanced Typography)) are not supported, as it would make the tool a lot bigger (factor 2-5 or so) and i believe it's not needed (right?). Wine and process "names"

Good day, everybody! I have recently done two things: A. I stopped trying to get Wine to use SDL for a graphics display -- the entire idea just sucks. B. Upgraded to 0.9.12 This has presented me with something quite odd Windows programs running in Wine had their argv[0]'s exposed to Linux. Let me clarify: When you run 'ps', the first word in the "CMD" field is usually a program's argv[0] and is referred to as the process's "name", but of course you all know that. It seems that Windows processes have their names exported to Linux in the same way, I literally had this in the 'ps' output: 13885 pts/1 00:00:21 C:\windows\notepad.exe Is this a new behaviour of Wine 0.9.12, or have the virus writers finally caught up with us? -- The real problem with C++ for kernel modules is: the language just sucks. -- Linus Torvalds

This is not a question email, but one that states the minimum required Fontforge needed to build Wine. Treat it as third-party documentation. Versions of Wine up to 0.9.10 need fontforge-20050624; Never use anything older. Versions 0.9.11 and 0.9.12 require something newer. Newbie git experience: resetting local git tree back to an earlier state

This is a little success story. I thought I'd post it to encourage other people to try Mike's tree via git. I just started using git so I could track Mike McCormack's tree. I first followed the instructions at http://wiki.winehq.org/GitWine to get a winehq tree, then followed Mike's instructions at http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2006-April/047208.html to grab the latest changes. The commands I used on my Ubuntu box were, all in all: sudo apt-get install git-core git-doc git clone git://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git wine-git cat > .git/remotes/mmbranch <<EOF URL: http://mandoo.dyndns.org/wine.git Pull: refs/heads/master:refs/heads/mmbranch EOF git fetch mmbranch git pull . mmbranch Everything went smoothly; it was rather fabulous. Then I ran into a regression, and wanted to roll back to Mike's tree as of a certain patch, http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2006-April/026126.html I gather the right command for this is "git reset", so I read the man page. It wants a "commit-ish" as the argument. (Boy, that's helpful.) Looking at that patch, I saw its filename was an md5 sum, so I figured maybe that was the "commit-ish", and tried $ git reset --soft b32ae7a40c601427fea7cb9f145138221030f869 fatal: Needed a single revision Crud. At this point I punted, sent an email to James asking for help, ate a cookie, and periodically re-read google and the man pages. Eventually it dawned on me that you can specify a particular commit by how many back from the head it is, e.g. HEAD~5 is 5 back from the tip. I also stumbled on the command "git log", which shows you all changes, most recent first. Sure enough, the change I wanted was eight back from the head. So I tried $ git reset --soft HEAD~8 And voila, it worked; "git log" now showed the desired change as the latest! (Whew. I thought I was going to drown in man pages for a while there.) Annoyingly, "make" did nothing after this, but I knew the changes I wanted to revert were all in one DLL, so I just removed that DLL's .o files and ran make again. I feel a bit more comfortable with git now! - Dan

Whow I havent posted in a while... Gottta job -- no more college (but I have to finish my Masters Thesis... crap)... Ok back to wine ------- (Mac OSX X86 ONLY) Some of my friends an I have been working on wine after work and have managed to put together some patches OpenGL dynamic loading -- Mac OSX does not need to dlsym every ogl entry point -- it handles that for you... -- so numerous apple specific changes to make that work right GLX FBConfig -- not supported by mac glx -- faked inside of glx with choosevisual (~80,000 calls to choose visual with various pixel formats) -- this can be done better with agl or cgl or ANYTHING but x11 glx Stack fudging -- mac requires 16 byte aligned stack windows does not -- this leads to illegal instructions (aligned wrongly) -- until gcc can handle this I have a temporary solution to realign stacks using inline asm (fragile and dangerous -- but better than crashing) GLX Root Window -- Wine uses the fact that a root window exists in x11 in many places... -- But no one wants to run the x11 root window on their mac (what the b&w checkerz are ugly?) -- So I have some fixes for that too -- basically make a button and use its context for querying quartzdrv -- from darwine -- I got this to compile and load -- but its not very useful -- it makes white boxes winecoreaudio -- from darwine -- I got this to compile and load -- but its not very useful -- it crashes ALOT I think thats all -- WHEW.. ATM -- We have the glx root window fixes and fbconfig fixes in for ddraw and d3d and ogl I have only put the stack fudging asm blocks in specific functions ---------- So what is the next step? Handles to unix executables exec'd with CreateProcess()

It seems that it is not currently possible to get the exit code of a unix program executed with _wspawnv(_P_WAIT, [unix app], [args]) because CreateProcess() does not return a handle to the new process. _wspawnv() uses the handle to WaitForSingleObject() the end of execution and also needs it to GetExitCodeProcess(). Is implementation of handles to unix processes something that could be done and pass muster, or just a corner case for a feature that doesn't add to Windows compatibility? FWIW, my application for this is to run a shell script and get the return value. Under Windows, I run the shell script with Cygwin; under Wine, I had originally planned to execute it directly. Conformity testing

I've graduated to using winetest and have a question. From what I understand winetest is a conformity tool, and therefore wine will not always pass everything. The question is, how do I know what works under linux but doesn't under Solaris so I can identify what I need to work on for Solaris ? Main Objective: Support for SafeDisc (basically ver 1 Support) Part 1 (Getting the basic IRP support) Secondary Objective: Have wine specific ntoskrnl.exe that handles this Requirements: Needs to have in depth knowledge of Win32 Internals as well as wine server internals. Implementing Xinerama

I have been trying to get a very simple Xinerama implementation working for wine, but am having some problems. My approach was to just query the system for the screens that make up the display and only report the resolution of the first display with the offset of 0+0. The resolution detection part of the code seems to be working as I can see looking through the traces, but every time the app comes up full screen it still stretches across both screens. I can see it enumerating the displays (there is only one) and finding the correct resolution, but don't understand why it still comes up across both screens. I was hoping someone could explain what else I need to do attempt to get this working. I am using wine version 0.9.11 which I have applied a patch to work around the WorldOfWarcraft picking bug. The Xinerama display that I am using has a resolution of 2560 x 1024 and when I query the screens I get Screen 0: 0+0+1280x1024 and Screen 1: 1280+0+1280x1024. When I detect the screens I only put in one resolution which is the one with offset (0+0). So for my system there should be only one resolution to choose from. I base my code off the structure of XRandR so it should be for the most part correct. If anyone could help it would be appreciated. Judd Tracy

What do we need from other projects?

Every once in a while a developer from another project asks 'What could I do in my project to help Wine?'. We know there is stuff that could help us, some have been discussed on the mailing list long ago, but there's no good trace of it so that we are usually unable to really come with a good answer. So I created a Wiki page to keep track of these features we would need from other projects to make Wine better. There are some *BIG* caveats though: * The page is 'http://wiki.winehq.org/WineWishes'. It may be a terrible name so I'm open to other name suggestions. * Currently it's only linked to from my home page so it's pretty much impossible to find. I'm not sure where to link to it though? Would it be ok to link to it from the FrontPage? From the TodoList maybe? * This stuff is pretty technical and I don't feel up to the task of describing for each exactly what we need, what for, and why that project's current API is not good enough for us. So please edit the page and fix up the draft description I have put there. In particular this probably means Kai Blin and/or Juan Lang for the Samba stuff, and Alexandre Julliard, Dmitry Timoshkov or Mike McCormack to correct my weird window manager speculations. Does boost::threads + wine threads == happiness? I would like to use boost threads in my winelib application, but they need to coexist with threads created using the windows APIs by 3rd party plugin DLLs. I built a test app that uses the two and they appear to share both a CRITICAL_SECTION and a boost::mutex fine, so it looks like I am in the clear. But I don't have alot of confidence in my understanding of how Wine implements threads, so I thought it would be wise to ask. Attached is my test program.
