First Wine-Aware malware?

Hi, I just tried to run some "Malware Checker" just for fun in Wine, just out of interest how many infected files it will find on a fresh .wine setup. Bad security habbit, I know :-| . This app was the "ErrorSafe Scanner" from http://de.errorsafe.com/pages/scanner_de/index.php?aid=fastint_at_de_lng_ed… Don't blame me for system breakage if you go there ;-) Well, I ran it in a fresh .wine with my unpriviledged testing user(forgot to remove the Z:\ drive :-( ) . It started without showing anything, and created some autostart registry entries. As it couldn't be killed with Strg+C, I looked at the processes with ps to kill it. Well, I found a lot of "ErrorSafeScannerInstall_de.exe -nag", but also this: 8835 pts/2 S+ 0:00 sh -c ping -w 1 instlog.errorsafe.com >/dev/null 2>/dev/null 8836 pts/2 S+ 0:00 ping -w 1 instlog.errorsafe.com Well, it also showed a few wininet fixmes: fixme:wininet:InternetCheckConnectionW Is there something in Wine which executes the Unix shell to run ping, redirecting all output to /dev/null ? Or did this malware know about Wine and Linux, and started the native apps, with the redirection? Well, I will now do a complete security check on my whole Linux box :-( (That's bad security too, I know, I should flatten the whole system) BTW, that malware is described here: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/errorsafe.html. Hi, Another idea for Summer of Code that strikes me as useful and doable: - Virus Scanner Support WINE is currently one of the ways a UNIX user runs code downloaded from the network. This code is also known to be more often viral infected, might contain worms, or spyware. There exists an OpenSource virus scan engine called ClamAV which could be hooked into WINE, for instance via CreateProcess() or LoadLibrary() or other places. [There is however a small license problem. Clamav is GPLed, while WINE is LPGL.] Ciao, Marcus

Here's some suggestions for SoC projects: * Complete the Wine Web browser (aka. Internet Explorer) frame (menu/toolbar/status bar) in shdocvw. We currently have code to render HTML, thanks to Jacek's Mozilla work, and a frame with no controls. * Full URLMoniker implementation. The main goal would be to get native IE working with builtin urlmon.dll. (Jacek's suggestion) * Implement transacted mode for OLE32 Storage (STGM_TRANSACTED). Mike

Tahoma font

Hi, next week i have quite some (travel)time i have to kill, so i thought maybe i could use the time to add tahoma font to wine (needed for Steam). I played around a bit with fontforge and a basically i think i get how to create fonts, and add them to wine. However, i'm not sure what the legal way is to do this; if i import the windows Tahoma.TTF into fontforge it seems the .sfd is already generated but i guess it's not legal to add that to wine. SambaXP update, part 2

Hi folks, now that SambaXP is officialy over, the samba team a couple of other people have retreated to a smaller room to discuss other things. Steve French had a talk about using CIFS on linux as a replacement to NFS which seems to be pretty cool. A couple of other talks were given, too, but if you're really interested, have a look at the schedule[1]. What was more interesting was that after the talks there was a panel discussion where the samba team expressed interest in continuing cooperation with Wine as discussed on last year's wineconf. Steve asked how exactly we wanted the named pipes exposed and if we could write up some testcases for that stuff. I think if anybody is interested in working on that is to email Steve directly. I got some more work on GENSEC done, but in order to really link this together, some more work is needed. I still have things blowing up on me when trying to use it for client-side sspi. A bit more on edit control margins

I went ahead and took a bunch more measurements of font margins in the edit control. These are all taken on real Win2k using traces added to the conformance test test_margins_font_change, and cross compiled with MinGW. So here they are for posterity. The results are rather confusing to me. But there seems to be a general trend. [SOC] ASIO

What is ASIO? ASIO is a driver interface for pro-audio apps developed by Steinberg. It's somewhat similar to our beloved Jack sound server, but not as advanced. I thought about implementing ASIO for wine so we are one step neaer to a running Cubase. I have also some advanced audio hardware - hercules 16/12 fw (need to check if there are some dirvers). At the moment I am a student of Computer Sciences in the 4 term and have done programming with c, c++ and java.
