IMM / IME work

Hello all, I know this will only interest a small portion of you but thought i would give a quick update on the state of IMM32 since I have brought it to a major milestone. All the main patches are in which now separate IMM32 and IMEs. There is still more work to do but the major framework is in place. X11 XIM processing should be unchanged. However wine can now begin to load native windows IMEs as well. I have tested with windows ATOK20 (a popular Japanese IME) and successfully had text processing in a fully IME aware application. There are still clear issues to resolve in many aspects of this processing but we have forward progress. ImmInstallIME does not work yet, nor does switching keyboards. So to get the native IME to work you need to add this registry key. [System\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Keyboard Layouts\\<keyboard layout>] "Ime File"=<IME filename> so for example for ATOK20 in Japanese i used. [System\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Keyboard Layouts\\e0010411] "Ime File"="ATOK20W.IME" I would love to hear how well things work. I am sure using native IMEs will quickly show us many places where IMM32 needs to be improved. One issues I am going to investigate next is that sometimes non x11drv ime initialization, if occurring too early, causes x11drv to fail to create windows. What happened to the Fedora packages?

What happened to the Fedora packages? They have not been updated since 0.9.2!!!! Right now it is at 0.9.10!!! Nearly every other Linux distro supported has the up to date packages!!! And why does the Red Hat packages site not go to the SourceForge site as it does for SUSE packages and the others?? I have not really had the guts to ask until now, because I thought that maybe there was a slump, but now, its getting annoying!! And Fedora just released Fedora Core 5 yesterday!!! Please tell me new packages will be ready soon!!! Compiling WINE always crashes my computer, so I prefer to use the RPMs...

winequartz.drv Mac OS X UI discontinued?

Hi, I know that CodeWeavers supports quite nicely Mac builds of Wine, and CrossOver for Mac, yet all of them are X11. There was also once Darwine - an effort to provide Carbon Wine UI driver and Mac optimizations & L&F. Pretty many of those were merged back to Wine, but not winequartz.drv. Do you guys think about reviving winequartz.drv? This would greatly improve Wine on Mac as we could have native Mac fonts handling that's faster than FreeType, Dock icons for Wine applications, and few others. There's still old copy of the it hanging around, but it is abandoned, and no longer compiles with Wine. Or I think it would be cool to write new winecocoa.drv or sthing like that, as Apple officially states that Carbon is deprecated. Wine desktop integration: current directory of app launched with doubleclick?

I *almost* have a great success story to report; the only thing keeping it from being a success story is the current directory chosen by Nautilus when double-clicking on .exe files. My wife hurt a finger trying to impersonate a Sampsonite Luggage gorilla, and had to go to a hand doctor. Along the way her hand got x-rayed, and the doctor handed her a cd-rom with the x-ray pictures on it. The disc has an autorun.inf on it that should start ViewSel.exe. I don't know if that's supposed to work with Wine and Nautilus, but probably doubleclicking on ViewSel.exe does the same thing. ViewSel.exe puts up two big buttons: low res (which launches a web browser on an html file), and high res (which launches a DICOM viewer). If you cd to the root of the cd-rom drive and run ViewSel, it works. If the current directory is anything else, it doesn't work. If you start the autorun app via Nautilus, those buttons don't work, so presumably it sets the current directory to something other than the root of the drive. To see, I created a wrapper shell script, ~/bin/mywine, containing #!/bin/sh pwd > /tmp/log and used "Start with" to launch ViewSel.exe with ~/bin/mywine. This showed that the current directory was $HOME. I had a look at the gnome code to see how it decided, but it was a bit hard to follow. (See gnome_vfs_mime_application_launch_with_env.) So I tried a little shell magic. I created a new wrapper shell script that assumes the argument is a path to a file, and sets the current directory to the directory containing that file: #!/bin/sh DIR=`dirname "$1"` DIR=`cd "$DIR"; pwd` cd "$DIR" wine "$@" That worked better; it let ViewSel.exe launch the DICOM viewer. So... I suppose the next step is to look at the debian/ubuntu packages for wine and see if that little wrapper script could be incorporated into the default way file browsers start wine? It sure would be nice if apps that expected the current directory to behave like this (it's not uncommon!) Just Worked. - Dan

FWIW, my opinion is that any deep integration is going to be hard, and that for the moment we should go with something much simpler: simply support mstheme files well, and provide themes that look like the default themes on Ubuntu / OpenSuse / Fedora.

RFC: Proposed new web site design

At Wineconf, we made the decision to change the entry page to the Wine web site. The hope was to simplify and stream line it, and to put in place the infrastructure to start moving more content to the Wiki. Jeremy Newman and Jon Parshall have put a lot of time and energy into a proposed new design, following what we took away from the meetings at Wineconf. A mock up of that design is up now here: http://wine.codeweavers.com/winehq_new/ ...and the theming intended for all 'child' pages of the web site, starting with the Wiki: http://wine.codeweavers.com/winehq_new/wiki.html Beyond the normal controversy that any new design sparks there is one major potential controversial change. That is, I am asking for prime placement on the download page on behalf of CodeWeavers instead of the (stale and ugly, sorry) banner ads we used in the past. Hi, There is a discussion going on over at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wine/+bug/111061 about improving Wine's look and feel to better match the system that it is running on. The situation is as follows: == Colour Schemes Wine supports these by reading the settings from the registry. Winecfg can load a .theme file containing a colour profile and adapt accordingly (saving those settings to the registry). At the moment, if you need to script this (e.g. when installing Wine) you need to manipulate the registry. It would be helpful if winecfg (or some other helper utility) supported setting the theme file on the command line. In addition to this, if the user changes the theme used on their system it would not be reflected by Wine. == Windows Theme Support Windows theming support is in place to some extent, w.r.t. the XP theming APIs. There are some user32 controls and the window/dialog handlers that don't support theming yet and there are some performance issues that need resolving. This would be set via the command line used to set the colour scheme since they can be set via the same .theme file. This is limited in that you need an XP theme for each native theme available. == Native Theme Support The main thing here is that Wine would monitor the native system for theme changes. The colours of the native theme would be mapped to the Windows system colours, saved to the registry and then a WM_SYSCOLORCHANGED message would be sent to all open top-level windows so they could update to the new look. Any metric data would be mapped in a similar way. As for the theme, an implementation of uxtheme would map the API calls to the native calls. Here, it may be possible to just send a request to redraw everything on each active window. If not, a WM_THEMECHANGED message would need to be sent to all active windows. The challenge with native theme support is two-fold: (1) it should work on any system - some have Gtk, some Qt and some Cocoa/Carbon, while others (like the *BSDs and OpenSolaris) are likely not to have those engines available; (2) it should not break any Windows application. Note that as Vista has a different msstyles theming engine (it is a DLL), we could have the msstyles DLL expose the uxtheme API and have uxtheme call msstyles to do the rendering. That way, we could have a gtk.msstyles, qt3.msstyles, qt4.msstyles and an carbon.msstyles that would bind to the corresponding theming engine. If the msstyles DLL does not expose those methods, the uxtheme engine could then fallback to the current XP theme processing. For Mac theme support that would possibly require Objective-C code to be done properly, that theme could be an external package (possibly in darwine) that would be installed in addition to Wine. The same thing for the Qt engines, allowing them to directly interface with the C++ Qt APIs. Thoughts? Ideas? - Reece

winetest.exe now available on test.winehq.org

Hi, Test.winehq.org is the new home of the cross compiled winetest.exe. Alexandre put in some magic to create the new winetest.exe on winehq. The new link: http://test.winehq.org/builds/winetest-latest.exe The link can also be found at the bottom of the test.winehq.org index page. I already changed the wiki to reflect these changes. This also means that Paul Millars winetest is no longer available. I'd like to thank Paul for all the hard work he did with keeping up that site and providing us for years with a cross compiled version of winetest. Hi all, I had managed to fix my selinux/wine/mono problem in fedora 10... it is actually two issues, in fact: 1) fedora 10 ships some much stricter selinux policies (but make some exception for wine). 2) I have kernel support for miscellaneous binary formats enabled and have win32 PE registration in the kernel, and run win32 mono.exe (or other PE executables) direct from time to time. so "wine [path]/mono.exe [.NET.exe]" works within the restriction of f10 selinux policies, but "[path]/mono.exe [.NET.exe]" does not. I could either relax the "execmod" policy in selinux, if I want to run any PE .exe's wholesale; or I just need to remember always putting "wine" in front of PE .exe's I want to run... Sorry for the noise.

The problems with having the macros in the public headers are that they won't work on x86 machines, and are not included in the public headers. Therefore someone developing for another platform will have their code break when using the native public headers or when porting the code to an x86 where the thiscall calling convention is used. Below is a patch at an attempt; there are a number of questions I have about the right way to implement it, and since I don't know the Wine codebase I thought perhaps readers of this list might (with minimal effort) be able to point me in the right direction. Hi, I don't know much about the current shader code but is this the right way to go thinking about GL_EXT_texture_swizzle + GL_ARB_texture_rg? For instance Nvidia drivers will soon get the swizzle extension and for that you don't have to fixups anymore. Is moving this way the right approach, so that it won't become a mess later on? Looks great so far. Comments: 1) nested scrollbars are evil. Better to put the news on its own tab, lose the little sidebar the news was in, and have a very small area in the main box for just the one most important headline. 2) The main choice text needs to be closer to user tasks. So instead of Information Overview of Wine features. we should have About What is Wine, and why should I use it? and we're missing the user task Will my app work with Wine? which should link to the appdb.

The new user-centric design looks promising. Contrary to some others I quite like the round corners and more modern look. Here are a few observations: - Light gray text on a white background is not so nice. - I thought it was called "Wine" and not "WINE" now. Shouldn't the "logo" at the top left reflect this? - I don't really like the icons too much: As others mentioned, a simple down arrow for the 'Download' icon might be better and the Development icon is really non-intuitive. Better alternatives would be gears or a wrench (or both). Also, I don't see a reason for them being buttons instead of just the icons over the background. Putting the icons into a box just detracts from the icons themselves, at least for me. Also, would it kill to user other colors than than those dictated by the theme for the icons? Compare this to http://www.openoffice.org/ which I'm guessing this design is based on. - I think a big "Compatibility" link, as done in the re-layout, really belongs onto the front page. I'm guessing many users will want to know if their favorite app runs with wine before the download link even becomes relevant, both for users who are deciding weather to switch to Linux / Mac and those that just want to find out if there is any reason to upgrade from the Wine version that ships with their distro. - As many others, I also despise secondary scroll bars. Right now the news content shows way too much redundancy: The "Latest Releases" box, the title of the latest news entry as well as it's first sentence all just say "The latest Wine version is 1.1.8" and they are right next to each other. Is there some way to combine this? How about just: Latest stable release (links to release page) Latest release (also links to it's own release page) Release date. Major changes. 1/2 Non-release news items (WWN,...) Also, even when resizing the browser window to the point where a horizontal scroll bar appears there is still quite a bit of white space in the center, yet the news box has a small fixed width that forces line breaks in the release change summary bullet points. +1 To the idea of getting screenshots back on the page, it's surprising how much a little eye candy can do.They should however be more up to date (perhaps automatically linked from platinum apps on the AppDB) and as was suggested link back to the relevant AppDB entry. Windows mobile and ARM

Is it at all feasible to run Windows mobile apps under Wine? From what I understand it's supposed to be largely the same API as standard Win32. How about a port to ARM for the purpose of running Windows Mobile apps, or just recompiled Winelib apps? Ubuntu is getting serious about its ARM port, so if Wine/ARM becomes a reality within the next, say, 2 years the potential for quickly developing mobile applications by just porting Windows ones is huge. Theoretically, we could run Windows applications on a jailbroken iPhone. Thanks, Scott Ritchie

Can please everyone make sure that their e-mail in bugzilla matches the e-mail they use to submit patches? Or at least make it easily guessable. Or can we have all developers create page on Wiki and state their e-mails they use on bugazilla? The reason I'm asking is the standard procedure for a regression testing is to add author of the patch to CC. However sometimes it's impossible to do. How do I create a backtrace?

I've been asked by a Wine developer to provide a backtrace along with a "+relay,+seh" log for a bug that I have filed. I've read through the developer documentation but I can't figure out how to do this. I sent an email to the developer with a request for instructions but have not received a reply. Could someone here instruct me on how to do this? I'm a non-programmer so please take that into consideration with regards to your instructions. Thanks. Matt

Hi, Looking at the history of that test (http://test.winehq.org/data/tests/winmm:wave.html) I see a lot of timeout errors on the Wine builds, even after this fix went in. The fix itself has caused a regression of playback in many applications and games that play audio (http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15559) I want to submit the following patch to revert the part of the patch that caused the regression and fix some of the tracing. I have been using this patch on Cepstral SwiftTalker without issue and have tested it also with the game Azguard Defense. It won't work in MIDL and it won't work in widl when it is fixed to put the includes for imported files at the start of the generated header file, rather than in between the statements generated from neighbouring IDL statements. For those of you that don't monitor wine-commit, Alexandre committed a patch today to disable building the regression tests: http://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git/?a=commitdiff;h=35078f4b57523d4afe00d… So the manual PITA patching is no longer necessary. Hi, I was still using the rpm's that Hans provided in the past. Some searching shows: https://fcp.surfsite.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=61801&forum=11 I've installed these rpm's but the executables use a different naming convention: i686-pc-mingw32* instead of what we check for: i686-mingw32*. spec file syntax for VARIANT parameter

In order to implement OleLoadPictureFile and OleLoadPictureFileEx, it will be necessary to change their entries in oleaut32.spec from stub to stdcall. The stdcall syntax wants a list of parameter types, which puts these functions in an unususal situation: they take a VARIANT (which is a struct, in case anyone is not familiar) by value as their first parameter. There does not seem to be any type defined in the spec file that fits this situation. I have been using ptr in my last couple of patches which add stub implementations for these functions, but when I tried to build this on cygwin I got errors like: undefined reference to `_OleLoadPictureFileEx(a)20' undefined reference to `_OleLoadPictureFile(a)8' Looking at the functions that are present in the .o file, I see they are really _OleLoadPictureFileEx(a)32 and _OleLoadPictureFile(a)20. Changing the spec file to list each VARIANT as 4 longs fixes these errors. My question is, should my next version of the patch list the VARIANT as 4 longs, or is there some better way to specify this that I'm not aware of? If not, is there a comment syntax for the spec file where I can explain why there are 4 long params where there should be one VARIANT? Thanks Jeremy

I think it makes more sense to ask the pipeline if it can handle a particular type for a particular usage. You can handle FLOAT16 support in the same way then. Also note that EXT_vertex_array_bgra adds support for D3DCOLOR, but only for diffuse, specular and generic attributes. That should be enough for anything we come across, but with a "can_convert_d3dcolor" flag like that you can't handle that extension properly.

Wonder why patchwatcher was down for 12 hours? It seems to have been a kernel problem. This is on an Ubuntu 8.10 32 bit Core 2 Duo system on a P5K Pro motherboard, with a PCI-E NVidia card. I have the proprietary Nvidia drivers installed, so I can't expect support from anybody, but I did want to at least kvetch in public somewhere. The build slave was unresponsive. The last thing in the patchwatcher log was make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/patchslave/winezeug/patchwatcher/wine-continuous-workdir/active/dlls' make[2]: Entering BIOS reported the temperature was 56 degrees after rebooting, fwiw. This is the first problem on this machine since I set it up several weeks ago. I guess I'll just reboot it and hope...

d3dx9: Add ID3DXSprite tests (review please)

This is my first test, so I think it's better to ask for feedback on wine-devel, first. There are some points, where I wasn't sure what to do: line 26: Is using inline okay here? IIRC that's C++ only, but other tests do it the same way... line 82: Is it legal to demand A8R8G8B8 support here? Otherwise, how would I do this without making the code overcomplicated? For what other formats should I check then? line 120-123: I hope it's okay to use hardcoded matrix values here, as the point of that test is only to make sure that the same matrix gets returned... line 215-253: 1) Is it okay to initialize D3D that way? 2) Can I simplify the initialization even further? Also, I'd like to know wether the code in general is clean enough. Any other feedback is welcome, too. As a general remark about drawing sprites, when shaders are available you can use those instead, which should save you from messing around with render states and texture stage states.

DIB Engine

I recently had a chat with Dan Kegel about the way to contribute and start hacking on a DIB engine. I grabbed Huw Davies and Jesse Allen's repositories and started looking at them. As it'll be an hard (and long) work, I'd like to know some opinions on how to proceed and propose an idea on how to have it introduced in mainstream without breaking stuff. The idea is, for now, JUST an idea and I still don't know if it'll be possible, but I guess yes. So, I was thinking on : 1) Try to join best stuffs of both repos of Huw and Jesse. 2) Add the environment variable DIBENGINE which could have 3 different values (or be missing) : missing DIBENGINE env var or DIBENGINE=NONE New dib engine will not be used, back to X11DRV DIBENGINE=FORWARD Unimplemented stuffs forwarded to X11, the rest using new dib engine code DIBENGINE=FULL use just dib engine code and shows FIXMEs for unimplemented stuffs The first would allow to insert dib engine in main stream without breaking anything, the last would allow to see what's more important to implement. The middle one (FORWARD) would allow to check if something breaks during the transition, and use the developed parts. 3) Stop and wait till it's put on mainstream, so more people could contribute. The doubt is if it'll be possible the mixed approach, forwarding unimplemented stuffs to X11, but I think so. Is it an acceptable way to proceed ? Ciao Max

Hi All, I notice that some of Wine's icons have been changed in recent releases. In principle I think updating the icons is a great idea, but right now I gotta say that icons in Wine are a real disaster. Take a look here: http://www.airwebreathe.org.uk/icons.png This is a screenshot of the shell folder select dialog. Out of those icons My Documents looks the least broken - with it's wannabe 98/ME/2000 styling. Desktop, "/", My Computer and Trash look like they've been taken from large icons which have shrunk - badly, and with a broken alpha channel. And the new golden Folder icons look completely out of place - they bear no resemblance to anything else, they've been scaled down poorly, they don't look like Windows icons, and they don't fit in with the Gnome desktop (and I can't imagine they'd look good in KDE or on Mac either). I'd really like for Wine to start using icons from the Tango project, or similar. The purpose of Tango was to create a set of icons that are clear to see, and look good on Windows, Gnome, KDE, and MacOS. Surely that's exactly what we want? Governance of Wine with respect to the Software Freedom Conservancy

Hi folks, As you may recall, several years ago, we decided to work with the Software Freedom Conservancy to ask them to manage aspects of Wine that merited the shield of a formal organization. They have been great, and a great improvement over our former process. I thought I'd send an email out for the record, expressing what they do for us, and how that is governed. First, there are essentially 2 major assets they manage for us. They manage all funds donated to Wine - the donate button goes into a bank account they manage. They also hold trademarks to the Wine logo that they filed on our behalf. For decisions on how to spend funds, we've adopted a loose set of guidelines. That is, Dan Kegel, Alexandre, and myself are in contact with them. The goal is that all 3 of us agree on every decision, but 2 of the 3 of us must concur with any decision before it is effective. We three can appoint anyone else we choose to replace or augment the decision group. All decisions are CC'd to the WWN author (currently Zach Goldberg) for monitoring. The SFC will recognize a 'revolt' by the Wine project. That is, Dan, Alexandre and I can be overthrown, once you figure out our evil plans, if the SFC is persuaded that the majority of Wine contributors agree on that point. Patch count in the Wine tree will be the primary mechanism to recognize a contributor. Finally, all spending by the SFC on Wine's behalf for the last few years has been related to Wineconf. That has either been to pay for conference expenses directly (as in Reading, 2 years ago), or to help defray travel costs for Wine contributors to come to Wineconf (as happened this year). Howdy, The OS list in bugzilla is a bit excessive. There are 16 OS's that I think we should remove, as no one is using them (HP-UX has one bug filed against it, but for all intents and purposes, it's not being used). Many of these aren't x86, so only could be used for Winelib anyway. Hi I'm looking into the timeout issue on NT4. The timeout seems to be coming from: 796 size = 32678; ... 799 ok(CreatePipe(&piperead, &pipewrite, &pipe_attr, size) != 0, "CreatePipe failed\n"); 800 ok(WriteFile(pipewrite, buffer, size, &written, NULL), "Write to anonymous pipe failed\n"); When I change it to write a smaller number of bytes: 800 ok(WriteFile(pipewrite, buffer, (size - 24), &written, NULL), "Write to anonymous pipe failed\n"); we don't have a timeout. Changing the 'size - 24' to a bigger number like 'size - 23' gives a timeout again. Also changing size to 16384 still needs that 'size - 24' in the WriteFile(). In fact every size I use I need a 'size - 24'; I can also make this timeout go away by specifying at least 'size + 24' in the CreatePipe() call. MSDN states that the passed size for CreatePipe us used as an suggestion. I guess NT4 and W2K don't guess/calculate that well? Any ideas? -- Cheers, Paul.

Hi You may remember me as the person that does the mailing list moderation. Every day there are always several users posting directly to wine-bugs, as they are hitting reply to emails generated by Bugzilla instead of posting in Bugzilla itself. I added a message in the text that Bugzilla generates to make it clearer to not reply to the email a few months ago, which at the time seemed to improve things but as of late the number of emails has been going up again. Is anybody opposed to me setting up an auto-responder so that any mail going to wine-bugs(a)winehq.org gets auto responded to with a message to post in Bugzilla instead? I ask this in wine-devel as I'm not sure who is the actual administrator of the lists are. Thanks Luke Bratch

Only ~100 valgrind errors left?

I'm getting back to valgrinding again. In preparation for adding valgrind runs to patchwatcher, I'm running the test suite through valgrind zillions of times, looking at how repeatable the results are. At the moment it looks like there is an annoyingly long tail of less likely failures, which is going to be a pain. On the bright side, it is looking like there aren't that many frequent valgrind errors left. See http://kegel.com/wine/valgrind/2008-11-13.txt for a manually deduplicated list. It only shows about 100 problems. Here's the breakdown by error type: 1 InvalidJump 3 InvalidWrite 7 Leak_DefinitelyLost 7 UninitValue 11 SyscallParam 25 InvalidRead 52 UninitCondition A word of warning: don't go fixing the problems behind these warnings unless you really know what you're doing. Superficial fixes are worse than no fix. That said, if anyone has a really good grasp of any of these problems, please go ahead and fix, or let me know which of these should be suppressed. For no particularly good reason, I've omiitted filenames, the list only includes function names and line numbers. That should have the unintended benefit of discouraging people unfamiliar with the code from jumping in and fixing things... Thanks, Dan

Hello I would like to implement ComputeSphereVisibility. The sting game is completely black because of this stubbed function. Here is my idea to implement it. Am I in the good way, or it is completely a bad idea? With GetViewport, I retrieve the viewport matrix V, and with GetTransform, I retrieve projection P and world W matrices ofn the device. I multiply the three matrices in a matrice M: M=VPW If M is singular, function returns with a failing message Otherwise, with the matrix M I retrieve the planes of the frustum view (that's a little bit of math, but quite easy) Then for each sphere, Let Visibility=0 for each plane of the frustum view Let I be the intersection of the orthogonal projection of the center sphere on the plane. If I is in the frustum view, then I have the visibility.So Visibility=Visibility|(flag for the visibility of the chosen plane) Once I did it for the 6 plane, I have the visibility of the sphere. Make Wine and the tests dpi aware

Wine use some fixed values for calculating gui elements, and hopefully the current values are verified with tests. The tests works in Windows, but only with the default settings: 96 dpi ("Small Fonts" / "Kleine Schriften") and the default theme. It would be a good idea to run the tests also for different settings. A first step should be using 120 dpi (Large Fonts) on Windows, and fix the tests and our Implementation. (comctrl32 has lot's of issues). For Patchwatcher, it should be possible to require selectable tests to run on more than one Machine with different settings. That way patchwatcher can detect 96dpi vs. 120dpi problems. Other possible testing improvement include color-depth and screen size issues. -- By by ... Detlef

Do I have to adjust a setting or install gecko maybe? Older versions of iTunes I have tried have the same problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi list, while diving into wine sources i've noticed that wine does not apply relocation to section not aligned to page boundary. Is there any reason for this behaviour? If it is wrong i've put up a little patch that solves the issue. winehq packages for Debian

Hi guys, I'm a regular volunteer in the #winehq IRC channel (man_in_shack). Some of you may know me :) I also maintain a few applications on AppDB and have had a couple of bugs found and fixed via bugzilla posts. I've been building Wine packages for my Debian systems for a while and now I've written myself some helper scripts to make the task trivial :) I build both amd64 and i386 packages. I'd like to request that I take over Scott Ritchie's position as maintainer for the winehq Debian packages as he seems to have all but abandoned Debian package building. I have the following caveats: 1) I don't have a suitable place to upload the packages (in terms of bandwidth restrictions) 2) At the moment, I'm not sure if the packages are suitable for an apt repository, as I don't have proper Changelogs or source packages. I'm not entirely sure what I'd need to do for this, so help would be appreciated 3) I'm fully set up to produce etch packages (Scott's packages aren't etch-compatible any more) as well as packages for lenny and sid 4) I'm not asking to take over Ubuntu package building (Scott seems to be good at this, and I don't have nor want an Ubuntu system) 5) I can be *very* quick to produce packages, as in the day after release (or even building packages from non-release revisions in git if required) Involvement in wine is fun! Another shot at running tests in parallel

On modern CPUs, with a 30 second timeout per test, the wine conformance test suite runs in about 4-5 minutes. That's wonderfully fast, completely sufficient for all purposes... ... except one: running tests under valgrind, which imposes a roughly 10x penalty. 40-50 minutes to run the tests is a bit too long to expect developers to wait for feedback. So I had another try at getting conformance tests to run in parallel, this time without any code modifications. I use WINETEST_WRAPPER="$HOME/alarm 30", where alarm is the output of compiling http://winezeug.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/patchwatcher/alarm.c That file has a hardcoded whitelist of tests that are know to not call CreateWindow (directly or indirectly) or do anything else that might not work well in parallel. alarm takes an exclusive lock when running any test not on that list. Even with this fairly restrictive whitelist, the tests were fairly parallelizable (see below). Because running tests in parallel is tricky, and makes our already somewhat shaky test suite less stable, I will run the tests the normal way first, and only if they pass without regressions will I then do a second run under Valgrind. And I'll ignore any test failures that happen under valgrind; all I care about in those runs are the valgrind warnings. Here are some benchmarks on a quad processor: -j time in seconds 1 255 2 155 3 125 4 105 20 79 With -j4, it looks like valgrind could run the tests in about ten minutes, which would be quick enough. It would be nice if our test suite really ran in parallel some day, but the approximation I have now is probably good enough. - Dan p.s. Out of curiosity, I checked how many tests interfere with themselves if multiple copies are run. To do this, I ran with WINETEST_WRAPPER="$HOME/foowrap.sh" where foowrap.sh was #!/bin/sh # Run same test three times in parallel $@ & sleep 1 $@ & $@ As you can imagine, that broke a lot of tests, many more than just running in parallel.

FWIW: with wine from git from a couple days ago, here are wine build times on various Intel CPUs in seconds on Ubuntu 8.10's gcc-4.3.2 (or 8.04): sec cpu wine notes 676 e7200 June http://kegel.com/new-computer-2008.html ubuntu 8.04 615 e7300 Nov 585 e7400 Nov (estimated, supposedly 5% faster than e7300) 540 e8400 Nov 360 q9400 Nov In all cases, this was with the default optimization level, -O2. Compiling with -O0 was roughly twice as fast (e.g. 196 seconds to build on the q9400). The dual core e7300 and e8400 were tested with -j3; the quad core q9400 with -j5. The current crop of CPUs is that they run cooler than older ones. Replacing the old Athlon 64's in the patchwatcher cluster with new CPUs and 80+ power supplies makes a big difference in the room's temperature! The quad CPUs are coming down in price. noob req: ddraw/vertexbuffer.c and HW vertex buffers

Hi, I've been playing Gothic2 and getting lots of messages regarding d3d7:IDirect3DVertexBufferImpl_Optimize, printed by ddraw/vertexbuffer.c. Reading the comments for that function seems to indicate that vertex buffers are currently emulated in software, and will be handled in hardware as soon as wined3d is capable of that - however, reading wined3d/vertexbuffer.c, especially CreateVBO, implies that hardware/GL vertex buffers are already supported. Git logs also show that ddraw/vertexbuffer.c has not been changed in a few months. Did I completely mis-interpret the comments, or has this file simply been forgotten? And if so, could some kind soul sacrifice the time to bring it up to speed with the rest of Wine, so that us Gothic players can enjoy better framerates? integration of winscard patches: ideas for implementing test cases?

Hi together! I am currently wondering which test cases make sense after an integration of winscard patches. So far most API calls are directly related to pcsc-lite behaviour and therefore we need a result from pcsc-lite which is comparable with what Win/winscard.dll would return to us. But this is almost always depending on the smartcard reader setup at the local machine. As a result I see a problem to automate such tests without having underlying assumptions concerning the attached smartcard readers and maybe inserted (or not) smartcards (i.e. specific hardware is necessary). Any ideas? Does anyone know whether someone has written a virtual card reader which can be accessed using pcsc-lite (i.e. an IFD handler exists which simulates reader behaviour)? Maybe together with the option to insert a virtual card? If not then I am going to subscribe to the pcsc-lite maling list and ask this question there, too. Any other ideas how to automate winscard tests to be able to add such tests to the regression test suite? Regards Heiko

Issues with VMware Workstation 6.5.0, winetest and directx acceleration enabled

Hi, FYI. I had to disable "Accelerate 3D graphics (DirectX 9.0c)" in the VM settings on several of my Vmware boxes. Winetest crashed my W2K and Vista box (ddraw:d3d) and made my Win98 box unresponsive (user32:sysparams when changing to 8bit display). If I can find some spare time I will report this to VMware. I do however run VMware Workstation on Fedora 8 which is not officially supported. -- Cheers, Paul.

Hi, At the moment, if you have several themes installed on your system (e.g. by installing StyleXP) winecfg will list those themes in a random (read not sorted) order. If I just add the CBS_SORT flag, the wrong theme is chosen because the order in the combo boxes are assumed to be the same order in a DSA (dynamic array) containing the theme, size or colour data. My idea is to store the additional data in the combo box in the item's item data. This will mean a major rewrite of this area to remove the use of the DSAs, so I am wondering what the best way to approach this is. I am currently thinking something along the lines of: 1. Replace the DSA for the theme colour list, storing the data in the item data of the colour list combo box; 2. Replace the DSA for the theme size list, storing the data in the item data of the size list combo box; 3. Replace the DSA for the theme list, storing the data in the item data of the theme list combo box; 4. Make the theme list and theme colour lists sorted. Does this approach seem reasonable? - Reece
