I've sent versions of this to wine-patches in the past. In this version, I've stripped out most of the tests except those for the initial creation of the ITextServices object. All tests in this patch succeed under wine currently.

Control panel developments and winecfg

Hi all, As some of you may know, my Summer of Code project is working on control panel support for Wine, and writing some new control panels. Part of my plan was also to split bits of winecfg into their own control panels, specifically, the Appearance section of the Desktop tab, and the Sound tab. Now, I realise people will have got quite used to winecfg working the way it does, so I'm wondering what people will think of this, or if it's better to leave winecfg alone. Due to lots of shared utility functions in winecfg, I've currently implemented a bit of code, similar to that submitted by pure_evil @ mail.bg some months ago, which enables winecfg to be executed with a combination of parameters to display a combination of tabs (see http://tinyurl.com/5yua77) as opposed to physically moving the code into a separate file. winecfg would then be called by a .cpl file to display the appropriate tabs. The default setting for winecfg, then, would be to display all tabs except for the Desktop and Sound tabs, which would be accessible as separate icons in the control panel. What do people think of this? I can imagine there may be a bit of resistance, so I figured it'd be best to ask now, before I do any more work on it. ;-) My intention for the rest of my project is also to working on assorted other control panels, however, which don't overlap with winecfg's functionality! I'd say let's let the desktop and sound tabs show up in both places for now. Once you have everything in winecfg exploded out into control panels, then we can see whether winecfg should fade away or not...

Still having problems with build on MacOS X

I've gotten some very kind help from a few people on this list with compiling WINE for MacOS X. Unfortunately, I'm still having problems. Thomas Kho had been successful, so he pointed me to something he wrote about it. Since I was running 10.5.2 and he was running 10.5.3 of MacOS, we decided I should try again after I updated. So I have, and I am able to successfully build WINE. Unfortuately, it still doesn't run properly. The first problem is that whenever I try to start any app under WINE (including notepad), it spends several minutes printing messages about building font metrics. Here is a sampling of some of the messages I get: fixme:font:LFD_InitFontInfo DBCS fonts like '-daewoo-gothic-medium-r-normal--16-120-100-100-c-160-ksc5601.1987-0' are not working correctly now. fixme:font:LFD_InitFontInfo font '-mutt-clearlyu arabic extra-medium-r-normal--17-120-100-100-p-101-fontspecific-0' has unknown registry 'fontspecific' and character encoding '0' fixme:font:LFD_InitFontInfo font '-sun-open look cursor-----12-120-75-75-p-160-sunolcursor-1' has unknown registry 'sunolcursor' and character encoding '1' fixme:font:LFD_InitFontInfo font '-b&h-luxi mono-bold-o-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-adobe-standard' has unknown registry 'adobe' and character encoding 'standard' Wine cannot find the FreeType font library. To enable Wine to use TrueType fonts please install a version of FreeType greater than or equal to 2.0.5. http://www.freetype.org There are lots more messages similar to those, as well as plenty of things like this: Font metrics: 99.6% done Then when after the message about FreeType, the whole process starts over again, repeating the same set of messages, several times. Then finally notepad will or won't start, and I can't tell why it does or does not, because the last message is always: Font metrics: 100.0% done According to Fink, I have version 2.2.1-5 of FreeType installed. There is no complaint about it missing during configure or build. When notepad does start, it seems to work, and I do see text. However, when I try to start the installer for Xilinx ISE (9.1i), all the text is missing. It would be nice if we could resolve this so I can run FPGA tools on my Mac without having to use Parallels and Windows. I'm subscribed to wine-bugs in digest mode, but lately (past week or so?), it's been repeating the past few changes of a bug with each new change, so some high traffic bugs are sending 5-6 changes in one 'message'. Wine binaries size

Hi. Trying to get comfortable with Wine development tools, I noticed one thing that I'm curious about. When I compile wine 1.1.0 on i686 Ubuntu virtual machine (I didn't manage to compile it on my "real" x86_64 openSUSE 10.3 despite all the googling and trying and pain :-)), resulting binaries take about 130 Mb on disk. It's way too much in comparison with Ubuntu/openSUSE deb/rpm binaries which take about 50 mb unpacked. Experimenting with CFLAGS and ./configure options didn't help at all. Am I doing something wrong? P.S. I can do some C++ and want to help Wine development very much, but have no experience in programming for *nix, so excuse my dumb questions. Ignore this patch, I still need to work on it. I ran the test again under valgrind the key events were not getting sent at first in test_EM_AUTOURLDETECT, and then started working after some point. Redesigning the AppDB front page

Several users have requested that we make the search functionality easier to find and use, and some have also offered suggestions on how to do this. Would it be a good idea to remove all the Top 10 lists and replace them with a few search options? We currently advise users to not vote for apps that work perfectly with Wine, and as such having a Top 10 Platinum list is inconsistent with that. In that search box, the user could search for an app or developer; something like App [contains / starts with / ends with ] [search field] [submit] Developer [contains / starts with / ends with ] [search field] [submit] Alexander N.
