IMM / IME work

Hello all, I know this will only interest a small portion of you but thought i would give a quick update on the state of IMM32 since I have brought it to a major milestone. All the main patches are in which now separate IMM32 and IMEs. There is still more work to do but the major framework is in place. X11 XIM processing should be unchanged. However wine can now begin to load native windows IMEs as well. I have tested with windows ATOK20 (a popular Japanese IME) and successfully had text processing in a fully IME aware application. There are still clear issues to resolve in many aspects of this processing but we have forward progress. ImmInstallIME does not work yet, nor does switching keyboards. So to get the native IME to work you need to add this registry key. [System\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Keyboard Layouts\\<keyboard layout>] "Ime File"=<IME filename> so for example for ATOK20 in Japanese i used. [System\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Keyboard Layouts\\e0010411] "Ime File"="ATOK20W.IME" I would love to hear how well things work. I am sure using native IMEs will quickly show us many places where IMM32 needs to be improved. One issues I am going to investigate next is that sometimes non x11drv ime initialization, if occurring too early, causes x11drv to fail to create windows. What happened to the Fedora packages?

What happened to the Fedora packages? They have not been updated since 0.9.2!!!! Right now it is at 0.9.10!!! Nearly every other Linux distro supported has the up to date packages!!! And why does the Red Hat packages site not go to the SourceForge site as it does for SUSE packages and the others?? I have not really had the guts to ask until now, because I thought that maybe there was a slump, but now, its getting annoying!! And Fedora just released Fedora Core 5 yesterday!!! Please tell me new packages will be ready soon!!! Compiling WINE always crashes my computer, so I prefer to use the RPMs...

Does "mac" mean "powerpc mac only"? I rather thought it meant "apple macintosh", regardless of cpu. I ask because Austin has just gone through and changed lots of "mac" bugs to "pc" even though the bugs were on Intel macs, which just seems wrong.

See http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14980 Essentially, to run Office 2007, you have to set an override for riched20. Since Office installs a new, spiffier version of riched20 in its own private directory, and expects to find it there, isn't it a bug that we don't let it have it? Sounds like it's time to write a conformance test... sure would be nice if that override wasn't needed.

DxDiag Demo Patch

Hello Wine Developers, Over the last couple of months I have been part of a team of students at UCLA who have been developing an implementation of the DxDiag application to release with Wine. After a long quarter, we have produced a working implementation. Some of the features are still missing but most of the functionality has been completed. I hope that our work proves useful to the Wine project. Attached is a patch that will add our code to the source tree. This patch is not meant to be committed, but should provide a demonstration of the application so far. Any feedback would be appreciated, I will try to incorporate any suggestions as I work on releasing incremental patches over the next few weeks. - Allen Hair

drive list is not refreshed in winecfg, no more disk label

Hi, [resend, 1st message disappeared?] since somewhere between wine-1.1.6 and 1.1.21, going to winecfg's drives tab does not (re)scan all drives such as CD-ROMs anymore. So access to the tab is faster, but winecfg does not display the disk label (shown empty) and serial number (always 0) any more. wine cmd -> "dir D:" still lists a disk's label and serial number. Did I miss a voluntary change or shall I file a regression? I'm not aware that my compilation setup may have changed. hal+dbus-dev have been there for ages. Thanks, Jörg Höhle

winequartz.drv Mac OS X UI discontinued?

Hi, I know that CodeWeavers supports quite nicely Mac builds of Wine, and CrossOver for Mac, yet all of them are X11. There was also once Darwine - an effort to provide Carbon Wine UI driver and Mac optimizations & L&F. Pretty many of those were merged back to Wine, but not winequartz.drv. Do you guys think about reviving winequartz.drv? This would greatly improve Wine on Mac as we could have native Mac fonts handling that's faster than FreeType, Dock icons for Wine applications, and few others. There's still old copy of the it hanging around, but it is abandoned, and no longer compiles with Wine. Or I think it would be cool to write new winecocoa.drv or sthing like that, as Apple officially states that Carbon is deprecated. RFC: Mac OSX should use existing Pictures/ Music/ Videos/ etc. directories - how exactly?

Hi, http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19028 winecfg on Mac OSX (10.5.6 and .7) does not link "My Videos" etc. to the equivalent directories on the Mac. Everything is linked to $HOME (or was it Desktop/?) instead. What a pity! Mac OSX uses directories named Documents/, Pictures/, Videos/, Music/ -- even in the German locale. The Finder GUI provides localized names. Unlike XDG/Gnome there are no crazy hacks at session begin to rename directories based on the session's locale. I don't know how earlier releases of Mac OSX behave, i.e. whether these directories have always been present. Does anyone know a reference? I located the relevant places that would need a patch: dlls/shell32/shellpath.c:_SHCreateSymbolicLinks and possibly dlls/shell32/xdg.c:XDG_UserDirLookup However, some design issues are unclear to me, hence prevent me from writing a patch: - In what order to add the Mac check? - When to check for a folder named "My Documents" (MS-Windows non-localized name in English locale, possibly translated), and when for "Documents" (MacOS constant name)? - Use XDG on the Mac or not? (if linked in, e.g. possibly when compiled via MacPorts, which pulls in a zillion libraries. Apple does not provide libfreedesktop.) Thanks for your comments, Jörg Höhle

Removing active maintainers

Hi, so far I found that Remco made the best suggestions. >From a quality of service point of view, unmaintained apps provide a more pleasing experience to the test data submiter: data is generally accepted within a fraction of a day. Not so for maintained apps. Why? Simple: there's a (large?) pool of general admins, so response time is low. OTOH, what response time can you expect from a single maintainer? My suggestion variant is: Delegate submissions after no more than 3 days from the maintainer to the general pool. Or what Remco suggested: accept by default pool, still notify maintainers so they can edit it afterwards. Easy to understand; easy to implement; best response time. Why look elsewhere? Find something else for removing people who volunteered(!) to maintain something. E.g. I'll be on vacation for 3 weeks, I'll never leave a ~/.vacation to please spammers, so I find the "8day response or be kicked" pretty tough. Regards, Jörg Höhle

Hi, i try run an app that bails out because WebBrowser_Stop returns E_NOTIMPL. Just like another app i already filed a bug for (http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9895) it expects ERROR_SUCCESS. According to MSDN this function "Cancels a pending navigation or download, and stops dynamic page elements, such as background sounds and animations". My question is, would it be ok to just pretend ERROR_SUCCESS (as i think now), or would there be any unwanted side effects for other apps that use this function,and do we have to wait for a real implementation (maybe Jacek has a clue?) A few comments: 1. I agree that it is useful to remove obsolete, uninformative comments in the appdb. (You have to be careful to leave the old informative ones, though; if somebody has a great workaround or bug that might still be useful, don't delete it.) 2. The wiki is not the place for appdb-like stuff; duplication of information silos is generally a bad idea. Yes, I created a few wiki pages for Adobe apps, but that was a temporary hack, and the appdb provides almost enough flexibility. (What's missing is the ability to add howto's and notes at the application level, i.e. one level higher than the version level where they all go right now, but that's not usually a dealbreaker.) 3. Eight days is way too quick to remove an inactive maintainer. Six months is more like it. 4. The Wine community has some abrasive characters in it. Periodically we have to ask some of them to chill out. Everyone who is very active should take care that they don't get too curt with other developers or with users. I prefer the way it is now. There are 4 other languages before the respective language so it comes in only 5th. They'll probably throw it all down a rathole, but hey, maybe some small fraction will go to useful projects. If anyone's at LinuxTag, maybe it would be worth wandering over to Halle 7.2a, Stand 111 and chat the projects up to see if any of them have any interest in Wine...

XI2 DirectInput/RawInput/WH_*_LL hooks

I've been thinking about the XI2 a fair bit since the last time we discussed it on the mailing list, and a few things have come to mind, which I think need sanity checking before I explore any harder. I'm assuming we want one X11 connection turning XI2 events into WH_*_LL events, RawInput events, and DirectInput events, simply because WH_*_LL events are actually sent out by wineserver to all processes, so we only want one of those per XI2 event. This leads me to retaining the current WH_*_LL-based implementation of DI, but with cursor management and control (ie all the stuff Exclusive mode brings to the table) handling via a graphics driver hook or similar. However, the mechanism for feeding the XI2 events to the wineserver as WH_*_LL events is a little tricky. XI2 events need their own thread and hence X connection, as we cannot rely on a WinMain loop hitting X11DRV_MsgWaitForMultipleObjectsEx in a timely manner, or in fact all. The three possibilities I see are: *) Most recent foreground application catches XI2 events in its own spawned thread. Need to elect a replacement on process exit. Easiest to co-ordinate with non-XI2 hook-feeding code. *) Wineserver gains an X11 connection, for XI2 use only. This is generally bad, only here for completeness. *) A new process (ala services.exe) which grabs XI2 events from X11 via its own connection and feeds them to the wineserver. I'm inclined to think the latter one is the best option of the three, and it requires simply that the winex11.drv detect XI2 presence and if found, it disable its own WH_*_LL feeding code and spawn the XI2 process if it is not already running. It avoids the complicated coordination dance you would need for the first option to avoid losing messages. Mind you, I've been thinking this away from the codebase, so it's mostly mindwork right now.
