symbol hiding

i'd just like to mention a small concern i have. hiding symbols might well be a perfectly honest thing to want to do. i personally can't see why, since a list of symbol names doesn't provide much extra help to somebody who wants to disassemble and reverse engineer your code. but i can understand that there might be some circumstances where its desirable. the problem is while hiding symbols doesn't impede a disassembler/reverse engineering effort very much, it does impede attempts to demonstrate the inappropriate use of someone else's code. for this reason, i personally wouldn't feel comfortable asking in a public forum how to go about doing this. your mileage may and probably does vary, of course. --p

Unhandled API Call to Kernel32 Question

Hi All, I am attempting to run a native windows VB6 app (United Devices) in wine, fake windows, but I continue to encounter an unimplemented/unhandled API call "CreateRemoteThread" to kernel32 error with any and all RH distro kernels using any wine version. I was simply wondering if any engineer might be considering working on implementing this call anytime soon. I am in the process of filling a bug report in the hopes an engineer might be motivated to take it on. Here is what my investigation has shown to date regarding this function. The function appears to be properly declared in winbase.h (wine version) as is the already implemented function 'CreateThread' along with the structure type SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES common to both calls. The kernel32.spec file exports show CreateRemoteThread apparently stubbed "@ stub CreateRemoteThread" but the implemented CreateThread shows "@ stdcall CreateThread (ptr long ptr long long ptr)". I wish I knew C and patch submission procedure and would gladly volunteer to work on this one but I only know some VB and am attempting to code this call in a simple VB6 procedure to replicate the error and, if sucessful, will be happy to provide the exe and source to winehq if desired. Any advice where I go from here as I want to dump win, get more hd space but I need this app? Thanks, Roger

We wanted to convert wininet to winsock but Alexandre says this will be to slow on Unix so we need to do something the wininet souce to be able to make it use Unix sockets on Unix and Winsock on the windows port. I dont really understand or know how this should be done as I never really have done any socket programing. If you could fix it for Wininet or point me to a example then I can try and do it for other dlls we might want to share on the Windows port. I am thinking about trying to port our ICMP.dll to Winsock also for the Mingw/ReactOS port but once again it needs to be able to do both Winsock and Unix Sockets. I might do code obfuscation. Winelib and MFC and mixing native Windows DLLs

I am trying to build my MFC-based Windows application on Linux. First question - I read in the Winelib user guide that I have to build MFC completely on Winelib as well. Is this really a must? Is there no other alternative? Second question - If my Windows application uses 10 DLLs, do I have to build all these 10 DLLs in addition to the executable on Winelib? Or can I leave the 10 DLLs run in 'native' mode and only convert the executable to be built with Winelib? Thanks in advance, Raghavan

Winelib Native Linux App

I'm a little confused on two points. I wrote a simple windows application just to open a window. It has a file menu with exit on it, and that's about it. All the documentation I read for Winelib suggests that re-compiling the application is the best option as this will give a native linux app that can be run directly. But when I compile this app with winelib it generates "winer.exe.so" which needs to be started with the command "wine winer.exe.so". This isn't my idea of being able to be run directly. Secondly, all my windows apps and DLL's are in Borland Builder (just native Win32 C, no VCL/MFC or other third party products). I have Kylix3 installed. I've managed to re-compile my test app with Kylix and link it to the Wine libraries. When I try and run the resulting executable it complains that it can't fine kernel32.dll.so. Just to test I tried copying kernel32.dll.so to the same place as my test app, same result. I added /usr/lib/wine to ld.so.conf and ran ldconfig, but this doesn't help either. Anyone any ideas on either of these issues.
