I can't see that any significant effort have made to collect these facts. Each of these facts is very easy to collect for anybody competent in any language that Unicode defines the alphabet for. 2. Unicode comparison order lies more in the area of algoritms and science than any facts about the world that the law have been designed to protected, so courts at least in Sweden would be very reluctant to extend to the law to this since it is doubtful that the lawmakers really intended this.

I think it depends where you live. If you aren't copying any original code you aren't violating copyright. In the EU (This includes the UK so I doubt that this http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-devel/2003/10/0076.html can apply to the UK), even if you disassemble something to understand how it works and write something that does the same thing, it's legal, so until you aren't doing copy/paste from the original code you're OK, even if you've read it to see how it works. In places where software patents are valid, you may be breaking the law, if that software is patented(DMCA?).

Say I have a piece of code, x (which is copyright) which always returns the same output for a given input (e.g. a function that implements a math formula or a function that retrieves some value from an internal data table stored in the dll or whatever) Lets then say that I havent seen this code (either origonal C code or disassembly) Say I was to write a program that calls this function for all valid inputs and prints the inputs and outputs. If I was to take the output of this program and, without refering to the origonal function or the dump program in any way (i.e. using just the "truth table" for the function) generate a function that, for any given input, generates the same output as the original, have I broken the law?

Program won't run in debugger

Hi all, I am trying to find out why Wine is not working with some closed application, and fix it. I have narrowed it down from the logs to something to do with MDI (Multiple Documents Interface). However - trying to connect with a debugger to the program causes the program to bomb quite bombastically. It appears that someone (ddd/gdb won't give me a stack frame, so I can only assume this is in the PE portion of the native application, rather than inside Wine) keeps calling STI and CLI (Set Interrupt and Clear Interrupt). This generates a segmentation fault (makes sense - this is priveleged command). If I do "cont", things continue (I can't vouch as to how long they do), but another sementation fault is right around the corner then. On the other hand, if I detach the debugger from the process, the process runs fine. I am at a loss as to what might be the cause. Is there any way to tell gdb to ignore the segmentation fault, and just let the builtin handler take care of it? Will using winedbg instead do me any good? On an unrelated note - I tried running valgrind-wine on the process. It complained right at the start that wine calls system vector 7 (waitpid), which is unsupported by valgrind. This seems odd to me, as this would suggest noone has ever ran valgrind successfully on wine. Implementing waitpid in valgrind produces even stranger result - it seems valgrind exists almost immedietly, while the main process continues onward. Anyone has similar experience with valgrind? I/O port access broken (SEH broken)

Hi all, sounds like the recent architectural changes were a bit too much: now I get Unhandled exception: privileged instruction in 32-bit code (0x0040348b). In 32-bit mode. 0x0040348b (FT255_T32.exe..text+0x248b in FT255_T32.exe): outb %al,%dx Wine-dbg> with a parallel port flash tool I'm trying to use, whereas before it used to work with both direct I/O port access and ppdev. In other words: exception handling about I/O port access has been broken. Andreas Mohr

Can I do this or does it get us into trouble?

I am trying to solve some focus problems I am having with Wine and I want to know just how far I can go without causing legal problems. The main problem is that under Windows a WM_KILLFOCUS is being sent during the processing of a WM_SETFOCUS message. However It doesn't appear to be being sent by any application code so I presume it is being sent by some Windows code. If I run the application under the Windows debugger, break in the WM_KILLFOCUS handler and do a stack trace to look for hints, and we use the resulting information then does that get us into trouble (since it is going to contain information about e.g. user32.dll)?
