What's wrong with having lots of them? They don't conflict and realistically there are a few people use a lot (WINEDEBUG, WINEDLLOVERRIDES) and the rest (WINEPREFIX, WINEDLLPATH etc) are used only occasionally or only by scripts.
It adds complexity, requires more documentation, it's more things that can go wrong in the user's setup, etc. This doesn't mean we can't add a new variable, but it means you have to make a convincing case that it is needed. -- Alexandre Julliard julliard(a)winehq.org
